Social structure of Budeč hillfort according to testimony of anthropological remains

This thesis aims to assess the social structure of budeč hillfort settlement during the second half of the 9th century to the 10th century in terms of biological anthropology. The first part deals with the processing of skeletal remains from a mass grave "Na Týnici" from the perspective of traumatology. The second part is devoted to anthropologically not assesed burial place around the church of St. Peter, which is the oldest example of the church necropolis in Bohemia. Thesis presents an anthropological analysis of human skeletal remains and their statistical comparison with cemeteries on Budeč hillfort and its hinterland (Zákolany, Na Týnici and Brandýsek) and other early medieval cemeteries in Bohemia and Moravia.

Culture and gender

Dissertation thesis "Culture and Gender" presents a theoretical introduction to study of phenomenon gender - sexual identity generated and shared by members of particular cultural systems, within social science, especially cultural and social anthropology. Term "gender" according to its basic definition relates to social and cultural differences between sexes in contrast to biological differences. This work surveys development of gender research from its beginning in time of Enlightenment, development of science and Women's Rights movement in 19th century to the present. The main focus of this work consists in gender aspects of cultural and social anthropology. Because of interdisciplinary character of gender research this work is also related to psychology and biology and presents the connection between findings of both disciplines. This work is based largely on analyses of foreign literature, theories and findings of Anglo-Saxon and French authors.

Hrdlička Museum of Man during years 1929-1939 as an example of a popularization of scientific knowledge.

This work is part of a broader effort to revitalize the Hrdlička Museum of Man and to research it from a historical perspective. Starting from the view that the popularization of science by museums in general is problematic and a viable topic for the social sciences, the work attempts to focus on the way the exhibition at the Hrdlička Museum of Man was constructed by its creators. This topic is analyzed from three main perspectives: 1st the scientific standpoints and personal worldviews of the creators, 2nd relations between the museum and the public, and 3rd relations between the museum and the nation state; also, the influence of the building process itself is taken into account. The intention of the work is to look at the origin of the Hrdlička Museum of Man within its cultural, social and political context rather than focus purely on a historical description. This Master's degree thesis, named Blood, honour and horror. Representations of siege warfare in journals of British defenders of Bergen-op-zoom in 1747, adheres at specific genre of historical anthropology of war and military. It poses questions regarding ana-lysis of contemporary culture of war and its individual variables, their interdependence and changing configuration during the siege of Bergen-op-zoom in 1747, during culmination point of War of Austrian Succession. Meaning of this text consists of an effort to discover alternative way of treating historical sources and to depart traditional conservative methods of analyzing the war conflict using national or confessional military stereotypes, essential features of key actors or theoretical normative of military science. The text comes to conclusion that most irregular and dramatic character of the siege of Bergen-op-zoom was primarily caused by profound misunderstanding between defenders and attackers regarding culture of war, especially acceptable definition of military honour and of legitimate combat techniques. Comparison of Spengler's and Kroeber's Visions of Culture.

The thesis compares the concepts of culture of German historian Oswald Spengler and American anthropologist Alfred Louis Kroeber. Both authors shared interest in comparative study of civilizations and similar approaches to it, based on an assumption, that culture is a distinct level of reality, nonreductible to its parts, but on the contrary controlling them. This conception is sometimes refered to as superorganic. Each of the scholars compared here hit upon the idea by other ways, hence it carries some different implications for them. Human gut microbiome: Origin, ontogenetic development, diversity and its use in anthropology

Human gut microbiome is a broad term encompassing all microorganismal life inhabiting the human gut. The bacteria living in the human gut represents the largest group of the human microbiome, make up the significant percentage of the human cellular composition and their genomes comprise a big part of the human genome. Gut microbiome has a significant role in human health and changes throughout the human life in reaction e.g. to change of diet and medical drug usage. This work pursues the acquisition and development of gut microbiome, the factors influencing its formation and diversity, and its use in anthropology.
