The effect of different management strategies on the dynamics of saproxylic insect habitats
ŠEBEK, Pavel
The thesis concerns studies on habitats utilized by insects associated with deadwood. It presents a review of current issues in the conservation of saproxylic biodiversity. The effects of active intervention on temperate lowland woodland habitats, such as pollarding or coppicing, are evaluated in terms of their suitability for saproxylic communities and other groups. Further, the importance of open-grown trees for saproxylic diversity is assessed.
International Trade with Protected Species of Plants and Animals
HÁJKOVÁ, Pavlína
The aim of the bachelor thesis is an analysis of international trade with endangered species of plants and animals protected by CITES convention and following elaboration of the case studies concerning real trade cases.
Contributions to the ecology of hollow dependent saproxylic beetles
ŠEBEK, Pavel
The thesis consists of two studies contributing to knowledge about the ecology of two model saproxylic species dependent on tree hollows. It includes, firstly, an analysis of the habitat requirements of the violet click beetle, Limoniscus violaceus, and secondly, an analysis of the association of several saproxylic beetles with the presence of the hermit beetle, Osmoderma barnabita, in hollows.
The trading in butterflies protected by CITES
MAURER, Jan
This thesis deals with international trade in species of butterfly covered by CITES convention. The trade has been done for 1978 2012, CITES Trade Database was used as a basic source. Import and export data has been assessed separately. Numbers of traded specimens have been evaluated for both of these two categories. Main countries of import and export, main terms, source and purpose of trade were also identified. Subsequently, trends have been statisticaly analysed that is it diference in different trade over the years. It was found, that the trend between 1978 -2012 was increasing.
International Trade in Endangered Wildlife (including derivatives)
Bartůňková, Lenka ; Kašpar, Václav (advisor) ; Vošta, Milan (referee)
In the course of the 20th century the un-sustainability of international wildlife trade became apparent. European countries play a major role in wildlife trade. One third of total wildlife imports is destined to the EU which makes EU responsible for the protection of world wildlife and should motivate the EU to be a model in biodiversity protection. Regulation of wildlife trade in the EU is discussed in chapter 1. Trade in wildlife and its derivatives is among the most profitable branches of the international trade. Animals are traded in different forms. Birds are usually traded live (for the pet trade), mammals are traded for their fur, butterflies for their bodies, reptiles for their skins, the highest value is attained by trade in fish. In some categories (live birds, caviar) EU imports more than the rest of the world combined. The EU plays a major role as an importer in other categories as well. The magnitude, value and trends of international wildlife trade are discussed in chapter 2. Profitability of the wildlife trade, strong demand for some products and imperfect implementation of CITES result in the development of illegal trade. Illegal wildlife trade is dominated by organized criminal groups that also deal in drugs and human trafficking. Illegal wildlife trade is linked to severe risks and dangers to both the source country and the recipient. More on illegal wildlife trade in chapter 3. EU imports one third of all legally exported wildlife products. It is also the importer of a majority of illegal wildlife products. Having one of the highest standards of living and seeing that the care of environment cannot be limited by political borders, the author of this thesis concludes that it is logical and imperative that the EU engages in improvement of wildlife protection in less developed countries of the world. The last chapter deals with conservation of Cameroonian Dja Biosphere Reserve and with the attempt of large EU's environmental programs to improve conservation in Cameroon.
The employment of transfered threatened plant species in selected stand types
VOPÁTKOVÁ, Alena
Abstract: This thesis stresses the importance of the environmental protection. It is important to help the environmental protection by being environmentally friendly, take care of the structure and state of the landscape, respect all the protected areas and thus contribute to the protection of endangered plant and animal species, as well as those that might become endangered in the future. This thesis also covers the characteristics of the localities with incidence of the following endangered species: Corydalis (Corydalis intermedia), True Oxtulip (Primula elaior), Siberian Iris (Iris sibirica) and Marsh Orchid (Dactylorhiza majalis). Additionally, this thesis also covers my own monitoring of the localities with the endangered species of Corydalis (Corydalis intermedia), True Oxlip (Primula elaior) and Siberian Iris (Iris sibirica). Based on literature survey and my own investigation, in the last chapter I propose suitable measures and protection of the monitored plants and localities.
Protection Strategy of Isolated Populations of Aesculapian Snake (\kur{Zamenis longissimus}) in Europe
LAPÁČKOVÁ, Kateřina
The Aesculapian snake (Zamenis longissimus) is a large, harmless species that suffered declines in many countries within its predominantly European range. This species also occurs in several isolated and threatened populations, distinctly separated from its main area of distribution. This work aims to protection of isolated populations of this species in the Czech Republic, Poland and Germany and compares strategies of protection in these countries.
