Hrdinová, Lucie ; Rychnovská, Dagmar (advisor) ; Ludvík, Jan (referee)
This Diploma Thesis called "NATO and WMD: Evolution of the threat construction and Alliance's response" deals with the evolution of understanding of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). WMD, especially the nuclear ones, have preoccupied NATO since its establishment. However, it was only after the end of the Cold War that NATO started to focus on WMD as a specific overarching category, consisting of chemical, biological and nuclear (since 9/11 also radiological) weapons. Despite the conspicuousness of the concept and increased use of the WMD term, the definition of weapons of mass destruction is not clear-cut. However, the way the actors understand WMD is very important. For this reason, NATO's official discourse is studied as an indicator of how is WMD understood in the Alliance, which will allow to fulfill objectives of this thesis. First, the work intends to analyze how has the WMD threat been constructed and interpreted within the Alliance since the year 1991 until this day. Secondly, this thesis aims to find out what is NATO's response to the dangers posed by the identified WMD threats (i.e. proliferation and terrorism) and identify the concrete measures the Allies undertook to tackle the evolving WMD threat. This thesis is based on...

Current issues facing the European energy policy
Kopp, Vojtěch ; Žamberský, Pavel (advisor)
The thesis deals with the major issues facing the European energy policy: the liberalisation of energy markets, security of supply and combating the climate change. After a short description of the history of this policy comes the explanation why the energy issues have become so important for the EU in recent years (oil thirst of the emerging markets, rise of Putin's Russia, climate change). The next chapter focuses on EU's response to these challenges, focusing on Barroso's Commision agenda. Apart from this, there is an analysis of major stakeholders' reactions concerning the recent legislation (Energy packages). However, the main part of the thesis tries to point at the discrepancies between the "official" policy as pronounced at the EU summits and the actual state of things. Major lagging behind can be found in areas such as the extent to which the external energy policy is successful (relations with Russia), the questionable impacts of subsidising biofuels or the slow implementation of energy market directives.

PhDr. Luboš Švec, CSc. Abstract The thesis The Soviet Annexation and Occupation of Estonia discusses different understanding and explanations of events, which are connected with Estonian loss of sovereignty in 1940 and after. The thesis aims to show, how differently the two once "fraternised" nations may regard their common history and how a burden of different apprehension of history still influences their relations today. The thesis does not intend only to describe the events, but merely to point out the differences of interpretations in works already written, concerning backgrounds of their origin. The first part focuses on analysis of Soviet, Estonian, and contemporary Russian authors. The next part is dedicated to collective memory and to specificities of Estonian and Soviet/Russian interpretation of the events. In the Estonian case, idealisation of national heroes is emphasised, in the Soviet/Russian case is examined the way of its development. At the end a particular example of conflict between two interpretations is presented: clashes between Estonians and Estonian Russians because of meaning of the...
