The Cyprus Crisis in 1974 and the Role of the United Nations
Lauer, Maroš ; Horčička, Václav (advisor) ; Soukup, Jaromír (referee)
This thesis explores the impact of the UN on the development of the Cyprus crisis from its beginning until its peak in 1974. This impact is analysed on two levels: 1. Negotiations of the Cyprus Crisis during the UN Security Council and General Assembly meetings and their effects on the escalation of the local situation in Cyprus. 2. Activities of the peacekeeping mission UNFICYP since its establishment in 1964 until the division of Cyprus ten years later. For the purpose of examination of the aforementioned, both detailed historical analyses, as well as theoretical concepts from international relations theory are used in this paper. The paper describes the evolution of the Cyprus Problem as a dynamic process, which needs to be perceived in its full extent, thus it is not concentrated only on the period of 1960s and 1970s, but describes original sources and causes of the conflict.
Consociational theory as a sollution for Cyprus?
Gillern, Jan ; Říchová, Blanka (advisor) ; Schlosáriková, Eva (referee)
The main aim of this bachelor thesis is to examine whether a solution based on the Lijphart's consociational theory can bring stable political solution to Cyprus. Cypriot communities began to alienate as a response to the emergence of independent Greece in 19th century and successes of Mustafa Kemal in Turkey after the WWI. In 1960 the system based on the consociational principles was established in Cyprus. However, during the first three years of its existence it became dysfunctional and various crisis resulted in almost civil war. In this paper I argue that it were mainly the missing favorable conditions for consociational democracy, as defined by Arend Lijphart, that caused this failure. This paper also examines whether this unfavorable situation remained in existence. Therefore, I follow the events since the failure of the republic in 1960th in order to find out whether the situation for consociational democracy has improved. As my research showed, although there are some significant improvements, some of the Lijphart's conditions are still unfavorable. Mainly the determination of Cypriot elites to establish and maintain the consociational system is missing and therefore it is improbable that stable consocitaional solution can be found.
The role of peacekeeping in resolving ethnopolitical conflict: Comparative study of Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Cyprus
Šinkovičová, Martina ; Karásek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Bureš, Oldřich (referee)
Diploma thesis deals with the connection between the nature of implemented peacekeeping operation and possible positive output of this activity and thus with successful peacebuilding in the specific context of etnopolitical conflicts. Etnopolitical disputes constitute a vivid challenge aimed towards United Nations organisation. Mainly, because this organisation is one of the main actors of international system in finding solutions of etnopolitical conflicts and because United Nations also proposes concrete tools for their resolving - peacekeeping missions. We work with assumption that the nature of etnopolitical conflict and the nature of conflicting parties involved influence, to an important extent, involvement and impact of peacekeeping operations in resolving these conflicts. Diploma thesis, through the use of theories of origin and solvability of ethnic conflicts, creates the framework within which their more complicated solvability can be explained as well as inhibitors of theoretically successful models. Likewise, the typology of peacekeeping operations is defined and also narrower understanding of peacebuilding, as a set of political and security aspects, is described. Datas from four case studies then offer an opportunity to formulate partial endings and findings of examined causal relation. C lick...

Relationship of Turkey and selected EU member states in the context of accession process
Štaudová, Kateřina ; Bič, Josef (advisor) ; Cihelková, Eva (referee)
Turkey has made a big progress in developing democratic and thriving state in last 60 years. In its history nevertheless you can find a few moments which make its accession to EU harder. Whether it is recognition of the Armenian genocide or the divided Cyprus island. The biggest Turkish struggle is not insufficent economic development but political issues in the field of human rights. Turkish public and the government has been losing its enthusiasm towards the EU membership, partly because of the european crisis, but mainly because of the feeling, that European Union only throws obstacles into their effort. Therefore, Turkey slowly realizes its growing importance and makes its own foreign policy heading not only to Europe and the West. Both member states and the EU as a whole should try to look further into the future and set the priorities.

Tax policy and economic crisis
Horáková, Daniela ; Tepperová, Jana (advisor) ; Bušovská, Monika (referee)
The work aims to compare the tax measures in countries receiving international financial assistance during the economic crisis between 2007 -- 2013. For comparison, three EU countries were selected which are members of the tax policy, tax measures, tax, Ireland, Cyprus, Spain, the euro area., and which hadn't faced the lack of funding before the crisis - Ireland, Cyprus and Spain. In order to compare selected countries, it was necessary to define the requirements of the tax systems in general first and determine what the economic crisis is. The current crisis is systemic and therefore tax measures implemented in selected states have affected all of the taxes. Most of partial tax measures have been made in personal income tax and VAT. On the contrary, the tax on corporate income remained almost unchanged in Ireland and Cyprus. The vast majority of anti-crisis measures in selected countries have led to an increase in the tax burden on individuals, mostly people with higher income.
