Non-Western Approaches to Statehood

This thesis studies the variation of sovereignty in the international order by analysing how the general model of sovereignty is localised in the political practice of two major non-Western rising powers - China and India. I argue that their sovereignty should be understood as liquid despite the fact that these two countries are very often seen as strong defenders of 'conservative', 'absolutist' or 'Westphalian' sovereignty. The empirical core of the thesis investigates China's approach to sovereignty in relation to Hong Kong and Taiwan and India's approach to sovereignty in relation to Bhutan and Kashmir. Based on theoretical eclecticism and pluralism, I develop a theoretical and analytical framework that accounts for constitution (construction) of the sovereignty of China and India but that also have potential for being applied more broadly. It is calibrated to elucidate that sovereignty is a liquid and fluid phenomenon. It is based on the debate between Hans Kelsen and Carl Schmitt and analytically enhanced by including the perspective of scaling (derived from Human Geography) and temporal positioning (inspired by International Relations debates on the role of time). Thesis is about political and economical relations between Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Peoples Republic of China with focus on time period 1978 till present. Main objective is to assess mutual political and economical relations and their development. Secondary objective is to examine the role of Hongkong in economic growth of Peoples Republic of China. The thesis offers a insight to an unique system of relations that was architected by the administration of Deng Xiaoping. The system is called One country, two systems. China capitalized on unique characteristics and abilities of Hongkong in its way to becoming an economical hegemon. However Hong Kong is also profiting from these connections.

Comparison of the Media Environment in Hong Kong and Singapore

This master thesis deals with the current situation of the media environment in two selected countries from the Southeast Asia region - Hong Kong, Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, and Singapore. The main object of the text is to create a descriptive analysis of Hong Kong's and Singapore's political and media systems and to compare the media environment of the two countries with a special focus on the freedom of the media. The comparison is based on the definition of their political systems, their constitutions and how they are respected, as well as on data published by international nongovernmental organizations focusing on the freedom of the press and the freedom of the speech. All findings will be illustrated with examples from Hong Kong and Singapore. The work is divided into four chapters. The first theoretical part defines basic terms and indexes, which measure the freedom of the press, as well as outlines the concept of Asian values and the concept of civil society. The descriptive section provides a brief summary of the history and political systems of both countries and introduces their constitutions, laws and power of political leaders. The battle for identity:Hong Kong cinematography from 60s to 80s

The purpose of this bachelor thesis titled The Battle for Identity: Hong Kong Cinematography from 60s to 80s is to analyze the battle for different kinds of Hong Kong identity within Hong Kong cinematography. The thesis is mainly concentrated on the key era from 60s to 80s. The focus is the analysis of cinematography as well as case study, as well as other cultural aspects and factors such as television and popmusic. The thesis is formally divided into seven chapters. First chapter deals with political, historical and cultural system of Hong Kong. Second chapter analyzes Hong Kong cinematography from 1913 until the end of the 40s. Third chapter focuses on Hong Kong cinematography as a part of Chinese diaspora and covers the era of the 50s. Fourth chapter addresses Hong Kong cinema during 60s. Fifth chapter is dedicated to cinematography and television during the transforming period of the 70s. Sixth chapter deals with the 80s as golden era of the Cantonese film miracle and in small part analyzes Hong Kong cinematography during 90s, especially fundamental is the year 1997 as the transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong. Závěrečná část práce popisuje její současné aktivity a opětovný rozmach v Čínské lidové republice.

An Analysis of the media environment of Hong Kong in 2005-2010

The subject of this master thesis is the current development of the Hong Kong's news media in the period of 2005-2010 which is scrutinized through the prism of recent political and social changes of the region. The main object of this master thesis is to create a descriptive analysis of Hong Kong's mass media in the abovementioned period. This master thesis splits into three parts. First part is theoretical and examines the key media theories dealing with the concept of media systems. Furthermore, it uses the media theories to identify the Hong Kong's media system and embed it into the appropriate theoretical context. The second part presents the historical development of Hong Kong's press system and names Hong Kong's main newspapers of the last century. Third part, the main part of this master thesis, scrutinizes the development of the Hong Kong's media system after the political transition from the British to the Chinese "rule". Here, the main attention is paid to the current newspapers, broadcast stations and to the new trends in the Hong Kong's media environment. Finally, this master thesis evaluates whether the political pressure from China affects the Hong Kong's freedom of press and whether local journalists use methods of the self-censorship.

Shanghai versus Hong Kong: Global economic and transport competition Abstract The main objective of the work is to compare global position of two chinese cities Shanghai and Hong Kong. The first part compares financial position of the cities, which comes out from the historical background of the cities and actual economic situation. The global transport competition in ship and air transport is compared in the second part of the work. Final analysis summarises the results and comes out with the statement of stronger city. Economic Development of Hong Kong in the Context of Its Special Position in the Sino-British Relations between 1949-1978

This bachelor thesis analyses the economic development of Hong Kong in the context of its unique position between Britain and China between 1949 and 1978 that means in the time of maoist anti- Western approach in China. It tries to identify the particular economic bonds between Hong Kong and Britain sand then between Hong Kong and China. It binds these linkages with the international political situation of that time. In the end I try to evaluate the influence of the existing bonds with Britain and China on the economic development of the colony. The thesis is divided into four main chapters with partial subchapters. The first chapter focuses on the development of the international political environment of the period - that means in particular the evolution of the Sino-British relations and the role the issue of Hong Kong played in them. The second chapter describes generally the economic development of the colony and identifies particular factors that determined it. Next two chapters offer a closer look on those factors that had its origin in the existence of the specific economic bonds between Hong Kong and the two mentioned countries. Territorial Integrity of China. Case Study Hong Kong

Following thesis deals with the territorial integrity of Peoples Republic of China. The work is divided into three main parts. The first one analyzes the historical concept of development of Chinese approach to the issue of territorial integrity. In the second part,the issue is discussed from the perspective of international law and its two main principles: the principle of territorial integrity on the one hand and the right of nations to self-determination on the other. The main part is an analysis of the current approach of the People's Republic of China to the issue of territorial integrity and to some problematic regions. Last part is a case study aimed at Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the Peoples Republic of China. This chapter contains the historical context of the development of Hong Kong and the analysis of the current situation in this area. It primarily analyzes its political system, the degree of autonomy towards Chinese central government and overall relationship between Beijing and Hong Kong.
