Exploitation of Sub-Saharan Africa: Myth, or reality?
Rychetský, Petr ; Kotýnková, Magdalena (advisor) ; Procházka, Pavel (referee)
The aim of this work is to analyse the amount of wealth that annually leaves Sub-Saharan Africa. The theoretical part introduces individual theoretical concepts that are involved in the work's topic. In practical part, there is given a space at first to the quantification of the very amount that leaves Sub-Saharan states every year. Furthermore, the size of this wealth is measured with regard to the economic character and the level of development of individual countries. Measured is also the origin of that money according to the different industries. The work answers the question, which reasons stand behind the fact, that Sub-Saharan region sends annually not-negligible wealth to the rest of the world. This work shows that there is a direct proportion between nation's wealth and the size of money leaving the country, represented by the gap between GDP and GNI. This is caused by foreign investments, which stand behind the economic development, however the revenues usually go into rich countries outside Africa. The least loss of wealth is therefore recorded from the poorest states, whereas countries most affected by the wealth loss are usually richer and heavily dependent upon natural resources mining.

Poikilothermic traits in Mashona mole-rat (Fukomys darlingi). Reality or myth?
ZEMANOVÁ, Milada
The African mole-rats is a mammalian family well known for a variety of ecophysiological adaptations for strictly belowground life. The Mashona mole-rat (Fukomys darlingi) is supposed to have strong poikilothermic traits, because it is not able to maintain a stable body temperature at ambient temperatures below 20°C. In our study, we measured resting metabolic rate and body temperature of Mashona mole-rats across a gradient of ambient temperatures to test its poikilothermic traits. Tested mole-rats show typical mammalian pattern in resting metabolic rates. And their body temperature was stable at ambient temperatures from 10 to 25°C. We thus cannot confirm poikilothermic traits in this species.

Reality and media image in the context of Soviet myth-making (The story of Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin)
Klingohrová, Adéla ; Zadražilová, Miluše (referee) ; Glanc, Tomáš (advisor)
This text analyses motives and conditions of an emergence of a hero cult of Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin and specifics of heroism which forms an entirely new category in the hero typology in the Soviet Union. The changes of the cult are documented based on an analysis of his media image in periodicals, photographies and literature from the 1960's until today (based on materials published on the occasion of the anniversary every ten years, ie. in 1961, 1971, 1981, 1991, 2001 and 2007). General conclusions are made which are shown to be characteristic of those periods. The word image is very important as the work is focused on analysis of the public image of his personality not on his real story which is hidden under layers of interpretations of realities and legends and we can be only guessing it based on various witness accounts and memories. His publicly presented (media) image is the only undoubtable source which we can reliably work with.

U.S. Homeland Security: Reality or Myth? Domestic counterterrorism post-9/11
Bernardyová, Alžběta ; Raška, Francis (advisor) ; Anděl, Petr (referee)
Diploma thesis "U.S. Homeland Security: Reality or Myth? Domestic Counterterrorism post-9/11" examines the change in U.S. domestic counterterrorism policy after the terrorist attacks of 9/11. More specifically, it focuses on the U.S. government's reorganization, which led to the creation of the Department of Homeland Security. As outlined in this thesis, the homeland security agenda was aimed at unifying the U.S. efforts to prevent terrorist attacks within the United States, reducing America's vulnerability to terrorism, and minimizing the damage and recovering from attacks that do occur. This thesis sets out to answer two interconnected questions: (1) whether the proposed homeland security agenda led to an efficient and unified system of U.S. domestic counterterrorism measures based on enhanced information sharing; and (2) why, in spite of the unique opportunity created by the 9/11 attacks, a comprehensive reorganization of the U.S. government to create a coherent homeland security agenda did not materialize. Throughout this thesis, it is argued that an efficient U.S. government reorganization was obstructed by three main factors. First, the change was obstructed by the organizational nature of the government agencies. Second, the reorganization was hindered by the "rational choices" of the U.S....

Art creates reality. Reflections of art in 1930s and 1940s in the texts of Jindřich Chalupecký
Mečíř, Aleš ; Bílek, Petr (advisor) ; Špirit, Michael (referee)
The presented thesis "Art Creates Reality (Reflections of Art in 1930s and 1940s in the Texts of Jindřich Chalupecký)" tries to outline resources of Chalupecký's programmatic articles and essays mainly from the turn of 30s and 40s of the 20th century. It builds on a hypothesis that Chalupecký's programmatic activity culminating at the beginning of 1940s (in particular the article "World we live in" of 1940) is unthinkable partly without - in a context of modern avant-garde criticism of 1930s - specific understanding and rethinking of a French surrealism, partly without searching for own theoretical approach. This approach was mainly based on a critical reception of the avant-garde art and was enriched with impulsions concerning particularly an effort to reassess and newly define notions, crucial ones for Chalupecký, as art, reality, realism or myth in terms of their relation to life. The thesis should emphasize specifics of Chalupecký's effort to newly define a meaning of modern art in relation to society at that time, which was demonstrated by so called turn to reality or to "world we live in" and by proclamation of "mythology of modern human being" need at the beginning of 1940s. In Chalupecký's considerations this need resulted in the concept of "new realism" in the second half of 1940s.

The medial construction of reality: example 2011 IIHF World Champioship
Staňová, Petra ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Zamazal, Ondřej (referee)
This thesis deals with designing of reality during the Ice Hockey World Championship 2011 in Bratislava, for which Robert Zaruba devised a unique project built on the myth of friendship and cohesion of the Czechs and the Slovaks. The theoretical basis of this work is the social construction of reality, according to which the reality in our minds is shaped by society. In the analysis of the structure of the broadcast channel CT 4, I am trying to find out how much does ice hockey push on viewer's mind and what is the amount of the Czech Republic and Slovakia national teams involvement. As a means of construction and reconstruction of the fictional world, the world created by its author, narrative is applied. The narratives typical for the structure of the CT4 are descibed in the next part in order to find a narrative that could serve as a template for the narrative of the championship. The final form of the narrative is shaped both by the narrator (presenter, commentator), who verbally describes what is happening and also the director whois responsible for the visual composition of the story. Features used in brodcasting, whose final analysis leads to the ability of distinction of the characters creating on the basis of similarity and context of highlighted object or those having arisen from anagreement among...
