Votava, Filip ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Ryáček, Jan (referee)
Diploma thesis The Bundeswehr Transformation - the Reform of the German Army During the Red-Green Coalition and Beyond, deals with the reform of German army that has started at the end of the nineties. The diploma thesis shows the problems of the German security policy after the end of cold war, which were caused by the global changes of the world security situation. Germany turned out to be totally unprepared for these changes and new challenges. The army, which was built during the bipolar period, mainly for the purpose of the protection of territory, by the means of deterrence, was not able to fulfill the new needs resulting from the changed global situation. The German society and politics emerged to be as unprepared as the army to face the new situation and the old taboos such as the German participation at the international missions abroad with a clear military character and with the use of force in general. The thesis poses the question whether it is possible to understand the transformation of Bundeswehr as a militarization of German foreign policy, or rather as a proof of the continuity of German strategic culture. The goal is to show that the transformation is a result of delayed normalization of German foreign policy and in any case does not mean a brake up with the traditional values of German...

The novels of Graham Greene have been of great interest to many literary scholars for years and are even nowadays. For their provocativeness in the broadest sense of this word, they have been either praised and recommended (even by the author himself) or condemned and censured. Nevertheless, his works in general have gained popularity of readers from all over the world (not excluding the Czech Republic) probably thanks to Greene's captivating style of writing and the themes with which he is concerned. Therefore, it appears to be important to examine the writings of an author who was even nominated for a Nobel Prize, for such discussion may raise interesting problems or give answers to yet unanswered questions. Understandably, it would be impossible to cover all Greene's novels in a greater depth in this thesis. For the present analysis, three of his four "Catholic novels" have been selected: Brighton Rock, The Power and the Glory and The Heart of the Matter. The main aim of this thesis is to provide a deeper analysis of the selected novels. As relationships of the central characters to themselves, other characters and God help to demonstrate the themes and motifs which Greene presents in the given novels, they will be examined.
