Karel Kamínek as a Prose Writer

The thesis deals with short proses of Karel Kamínek - author of Modern revue circuit. The first part is dedicated to environment of Czech decadency in 19th and 20th centuries, its French roots and European sources of inspiration. The second part deals with the person of Karel Kamínek itself. It begins with basic biographical data and presents selected projects in which Kamínek participated. The third part analyses the author's short proses. We focus on Dies Irae and other stories and on Disonance also on short stories published in magazines. We approach Kamínek's work chronologically; divide it into sections with related poetics, while respecting the framework of book units. Selected short stories are closer discussed. The aim is to remind forgiven author, try to determine the specifics of his prose, capture its development and to put his work into the context of Czech literature.
Emanuel Hauner's conversion and reconversion at the fin de siècle

The goal of the final thesis Emanuel Hauner's conversion and reconversion at the fin de siècle is to introduce and to interpret Emanuel Hauner's major poetic works, which have been so far neglected by the Czech literary history. My goal was to analyze the reasons of refusal of his works by both readers and critics. To make this analysis precise, it was necessary to take a close look at two phenomena appearing in Hauner's work: stylization and epigonism. The second major goal of this thesis was to answer the question of how Hauner's relation to occultism and Catholicism influenced his works. I was looking for other European authors that, similarly to Hauner, converted to Catholicism and in some parts of their lives had affinity for occultism. I have thus put Hauner's work both in the context of work of authors in whose work the conversion to Catholicism played a major role, and in the context of the artistic criteria of his time. Fin-de-siècle Elements in Flann O'Brien's Novel The Third Policeman

This thesis concerns the similarities between Flann O'Brien's novel The Third Policeman and fin-de-siècle literature, more specifically decadent literature and literature of the early avant-garde. The fact that, apart from metafiction, O'Brien's novel does not deal with aesthetics (neither when it comes to the form nor when it comes to the topic) does not invalidate the presence of fin-de-siècle elements or strategies in it; the elements only change and thus adapt to their new environment. Many of them become ironic, other ones actively contribute to the metafictional scope of the novel. The first chapter explains the parallels between The Third Policeman and fin- de-siècle literature in general. It concentrates primarily on decadent literature and its central theme of "unnaturalness." Unnaturalness occurs in variegated forms, such as artifice, artificiality or make-believe. Unnaturalness can be detected also in the protagonists themselves and even (in compliance with the metafiction of the novel) in the form of O'Brien's hellish world where the narrator finds himself. Vladimír Houdek

This thesis deals with the forgotten poet Vladimír Houdek, whose only two books were published during the turn of the nineteenth century into the twentieth. Emphasis is placed on all of the available materials about his work and life. Based on the analysis of these sources and literary-historical characteristics of author's texts and their motives, my work tries to determine the place of Vladimír Houdek in Czech literature. It introduces the contemporary response of his poetry and compares it with other poet's work at the same time.
Protagonist in Gabriele D'Annunzio's Rose Trilogy

In this thesis we will focus on D'Annunzio's Novels of the rose cycle, on the character analysis of its protagonists in the light of the specific social-historical interpretation of fin-de- siècle period. After a short introduction dedicated to life and work of the author, we will analyse the three novels with the aid of the works of literary criticism in a way that the major themes and specific characteristics of the novels emerge in their comparative interpretation based on the perspective of significance of the author's work in italian and european literature at that time. In conclusion we will consider the possibility of alternative solutions to decadence for D'Annunzio's protagonists which will bring our discussion into philosophical debate about crisis of misguided european rationalism, the crisis related to the problem of dissolution of subject of identity.
The reception and influence of fin de siécle Scandinavian literature in Czechia

This thesis deals with reception of Scandinavian decadent literature in the Czech literary milieu on the background of European culture and philosophy in the late 19th century, the cultural homogeneity of European fin-de-siècle literature being stressed. The Scandinavian literature is in this thesis recognized to be an element of importance for the Czech periodicals (the main emphasis is placed on the periodical Moderní revue) as well as publishing houses. The thesis deals more thoroughly with Scandinavian men of letters such as Ola Hansson, August Strindberg, Georg Brandes, Herman Bang, Arne Garborg and considers their impact on the Czech literary ground. The personal contact amongst the European literary personas of the decadent epoch is of certain importance to the thesis.
Female Characters in Arthur Schnitzler's Works. Comparative Description, Analysis and Interpretation of Selected Texts.

The following text deals with the problem of the representation of female characters in Arthur Schnitzlerʼs work. The initial point of the interpretation is the basic division of the literary types of the turn of the century into femme fatale, femme fragile and femme enfant. Based on the analysis of seven selected works (Märchen, Liebelei, Reigen, Frau Berta Garlan, Fräulein Else, Traumnovelle, Therese. Chronik eines Frauenlebens) it discusses their position in the narrative structure. In the end, it comments the question of the typification of these figures and Schnitzlerʼs tendency to relate them to concrete groups.
The Eternal Boyhood of Jiří Karásek ze Lvovic

The thesis attempts to describe the life and work of Jiří Karásek ze Lvovic through an analysis of his lifestyle, i.e. the way in which he organized, embellished and individualized his life. Karásek sought to shape his existence as an artwork, in accordance with the inspirational concepts of the contemporary and antecedent thinkers and artists (e.g. Oscar Wilde, Walter Pater and Maurice Maeterlinck). He accented its integrity and orientation towards beauty. In accord with his aesthetic vision (and his literary work) Karásek conditioned beauty with sadness and pain and attempted to emphasize melancholic beauty, unity in disunion. For that purpose he would accentuate particularly the disintegrative, critical elements, evoking the impression of unsuccessful, self-destructive endeavor to reach life's high ideal. This corresponded with his tragic concept of the artist immolating himself for his Art. I approach Karásek's lifestyle through the use of the terms youth and (eternal) boyhood, which Karásek himself employed as symbols of mournfully beautiful existence in his literary work. Bachelor thesis (in form of a case study) Ringstrasse as a showcaseof monarchy. Politico-social aspects of remodelling of Vinna at the turn of the century throws light on the reasons and effects of liberál period in Austria-Hungary and its reflecting in the face of the city. Most attention is given to the street itselves, its genesis and its meaning. Rightly the buildings, parks and memorials in singles have huge symbolical meanings. They inpersonate ideas of the period.
