Muršič, Nuša ; Helman, Ivy Ann (advisor) ; Kolářová, Kateřina (referee)
CHARLES UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF HUMANITIES M.A. Program in Gender Studies Nuša Muršič How drag performers challenge and disrupt our understandings of gender: a case study of the Slovenian drag community Diploma Thesis Supervisor: Dr. Ivy Helman, Ph.D. Prague 2023 Abstract The common perception of drag is that of imitating the "opposite" gender. Drag has, however, been evolving, and its implications for gender are explored in this Master Thesis. Feminist circles are usually divided between regarding drag as proliferating gender hierarchies and stereotypes or drag as a tool for subversion and new possibilities. I have conducted my research on the case study of the Slovenian drag community in order to reach results through doing interviews and participant observation. My results pointed to drag influencing the perception of gender via offering the space for experimentation and questioning. For both the drag performers, who were my interview participants, and for the audience of drag shows, drag loosened their strict perceptions of gender and the rigid gender binary, and showcased gender as a complex concept, which offers possibilities for gender play, can be fluid, as well as changeable. Gender hierarchies, are, however, to an extent still present when it comes to doing drag and drag communities. Keywords Drag,...
Czech drag scene - a series of interviews
Pukovcová, Klára ; Osvaldová, Barbora (advisor) ; Novotný, David Jan (referee)
Practical bachelor thesis Česká travesti scéna- soubor rozhovorů documents the Czech drag and travesti subculture. The main aim of the theoretical part is to introduce an interview as a journalistic genre, which is used in the practical part, and to transparently describe how the author proceeded in creating the interviews. The end of the thesis deals with the topic itself, namely travesti and drag as a kind of performance art that is closely related to expressive make-up, costumes and queer culture. The practical part consists of five journalistic interviews that capture the experiences of Czech drag and travesti artists. In semi-structured interviews, the artists talk about their own experiences or the challenges they face. They mention, for example, the impact of the American reality talent show RuPaul's Drag Race, which helped make drag globally visible, public prejudice, or financial valuation. The goal of the bachelor thesis is to create a series of interviews that will introduce this community to the reader. Additionally, the thesis describes the history, present and outlines the future of the Czech travesti/drag scene.
Car chassis diffuser
Kindl, Albert ; Balko, Marek (referee) ; Rudolf, Pavel (advisor)
Improving a car's aerodynamic properties can save fuel, increase range, or improve speed and handling. To achieve this, aerodynamic modifications and improvements are proposed to cars. The aim of this thesis is to describe a diffuser on an automotive chassis. The focus is mainly on the effect of its divergence angle on drag and lift. These dependencies are investigated on a simplified car model using CFD simulation in Ansys Fluent. The research section discusses the diffuser flow and losses, other important aerodynamic features and the importance of the diffuser in Formula 1 and passenger cars. The results of the thesis show the significant effect of the diffuser on the downforce and drag of the vehicle and indicate the important position of this element in the future of the automotive industry.
Wind tunnels for passenger cars
Fabríci, Tomáš ; Zeman, Radek (referee) ; Rudolf, Pavel (advisor)
The bachelor thesis is focused on a wind tunnel usage in the field of automotive industry. Nowadays, they are still the significant part in vehicle aerodynamics research. Specifically, at determining power actuating on vehicle, flow visualization, aero-acoustic measurements. Considering personal vehicles, reducing the drag and reducing the consumption are being accentuated. Aero-acoustic measurements are becoming more and more popular for improvement of driving comfort. Air-flow quality in wind tunnels directly affects the accuracy of the mentioned measurements. The effort is to minimize the accidental turbulence and reach uniform flow quality. Perfect quality of the air-flow will never be reached even though there is an optimal proposal of all sections from which the wind tunnels consist. Very often, we must be satisfied with the accepted flow quality according to the application. However, the progress in the field of computing modeling has reduced the time spent in wind tunnels and moreover it has saved finances. Currently, there is close cooperation between them to reach the best results possible.
Dance in Brno
Papcun, Peter ; Všetečková, Alena (referee) ; Galeová, Nicol (advisor)
Contemporary dance theater faces the problems of insufficient infrastructure and unsuitable spaces for its performances. Classic theater buildings and other transformed spaces often do not meet the specific needs of dance art. The lack of new, specially designed spaces in the Czech Republic leads to the migration of dancers abroad or to Prague. In this work, I devoted myself to the analysis of the current issue of dance theater and at the same time I focused on the analysis of the solved plot. Based on these analyses, I developed a proposal for a new theater that reflects the identified problems, offers solutions and deviates from standard ideas about the theater. The goal of my proposal is to create an environment that will be in line with the requirements and needs of the dance theater today. When designing the theater, I took into account aesthetic, functional and technical aspects in order to create a space that will allow the presentation of dance performances in the best possible form. The result is a comprehensive theater design, which is based on thorough analysis and at the same time brings innovative solutions for dance theater today. The building should be integrated into the scale of the city of Brno and become an integral part of its life.
Possible Uses of Camp in Interpretation of Czech Contemporary Cultural Background
DEMETER, Peter
Proposed dissertation is focusing on specific eccentric aesthetics based on hyperboles, ambivalent meanings and ironic attitude, which in Anglo-American background is so called camp derived from French. Camp origin can be found on the court of Louis XIV, where we can notice passionate tries to cultivate affected court-style culminating in baroque metaphor of the world as a theatre. Due to impact of modernity and postmodernity, scope of the camp extended to various cultural spheres and phenomenon began to corelate through its eccentricity with common marginality, respectively with something what is different from "normality" and "genuineness" also settled schemes of perception or ways of historical reflection. Goal of proposed dissertation is based on theoretical-historical interpretations to trace mentions of camp (mainly in literature) with focus on Czech background, where its rich interpretational potential can clarify most of social-cultural tendencies.
The Influence of RuPaul's Drag Race on the Drag Subculture in the Czech Republic
Šlahařová, Eliška ; Reifová, Irena (advisor) ; Vochocová, Lenka (referee)
The master's thesis The Influence of RuPaul's Drag Race on the Drag Subculture in the Czech Republic is concerned with the relationship between the American reality TV show RuPaul's Drag Race and the current state of the Czech drag and travesti scene. The main chosen research method is an ethnographic analysis of a series of interviews with drag and travesti performers. The theoretical part aims to provide the sociocultural context to the theme of this thesis; specifically the introduction to queer theory and an a summary of representation of drag and travesti in the popular culture of 20th and 21st century. Furthermore, it introduces RuPaul's Drag Race as a cultural phenomenon along with its brief history, an outline of its international sociocultural influence and current critiques. Finally, it describes the Czech travesti and drag scene including its historical development, current status and the relations between both scenes. The practical part presents the results of the ethnographic analysis of the 14 interviews conducted with Czech drag and travesti performers, focusing on specific phenomena relating to RuPaul's Drag Race, that are subsequently interpreted within the overarching thematic units. The final chapter applies the findings on the theoretical aparatus presented in the first part of...
