Mádr, Daniel ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Sekera, Martin (referee)
The paper deals with selected aspects of the media image of the Soviet Union during the Third Czechoslovak Republic. Its aim is to analyze the mechanisms of media image construction in two journals of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and in two weeklies of the Czechoslovak People's Party. Partial aim represents an effort to compare the resemblance of discourse of the USSR between Communist and Christian Democratic journals and then effort to capture eventual changes of the discourse image during the analyzed period. To achieve the objective we use method of critical discourse analysis inspired by the design from the pen of J. P. Gee. The first part presents historiographical outline of specific socio-political conditions of the Third Republic. Second, theoretical and methodological chapter provides an overview of the conceptual framework embedding that is used for the text analysis. The research part identifies that some discursive aspects of the image of the USSR in Communist and Christian Democratic conception seem to be diversifying over time, others are different from the outset. Armed Forces and Identity: A Constructivist Analysis of the Role of the Czech Airforce Figters
Chromý, Marek ; Ludvík, Jan (advisor) ; Rychnovská, Dagmar (referee)
The study examines the arguments raised for or against possessing supersonic aircrafts of the Army of the Czech Republic. The aim is to identify the arguments primarily during deciding on the acquisition of new aircrafts, because the old ones were retired in 2005. In the first part, the author analyzes various approaches to purchasing and possessing weapons systems (nuclear weapons, supersonic aircrafts and tanks) and defines three approaches, which he expects in discourse and which he will examine. The main part of the study deals with analysis of the arguments for and against the acquisition of supersonic aircrafts through discourse analysis. As a frame of reference author establishes the deputies and senators of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, the professional public and official documents of the Ministry of Defense and Army of the Czech Republic. By analyzing the discourse the author concludes that the official documents of the Army of the Czech Republic looks at supersonic aircrafts as a means of national defense strictly, professional public also looks at supersonic aircrafts this way in most of times. MPs and senators argue for acquiring supersonic aircrafts not only by defense purposes, they argue that supersonic aircrafts is mandatory purchase, because loss of the supersonic...
Russia in the Ukrainian governmental discourse: From Crimea to Minsk II
Krupskyi, Ivan ; Šír, Jan (advisor) ; Klípa, Ondřej (referee)
Since 2014, the increased interest of academia to the Ukrainian-Russian relations was reflected in the growing number of publications on this problematics. In spite of this fact, there still exists a research gap on representations of Russia in Ukrainian discourses, which are often taken as self- obvious. This in turn may lead to incomplete understanding of Ukrainian policies towards Russia. The specific aim of this work is to provide an additional instrument for understanding Ukraine's foreign policy towards Russia. In order to provide an insight into the way the Ukrainian government perceived Russia, discourse analysis of chosen articulations was conducted. As this work demonstrates, the central element of representations of Russia in the Ukrainian governmental discourse were systematic attempts to delegitimize the Russian foreign policy towards Ukraine through undermining legitimacy of the Russian leadership. This was done in a number of ways: the discourse actively used historical dimension and constructed categorization of good and bad periods of Ukrainian-Russian relations, characterized Russia as archaic, non-civilized and aggressive, and separated Russian political elites from Russian citizens, thereby undermining internal legitimacy of the current Russian regime. At the same time, the...

Chmelová, Eliška ; Mouralová, Magdalena (advisor) ; Nekola, Martin (referee)
This paper deals with a development of certain aspects of discourse between authors of technical and policy science papers pertaining to antidrug policies in time period of 1993 - 2010. The basic question of my research is: What kind of discourse has been taking place among the authors of these documents? I try to asses whether this discourse has changed over the years and how. I analyze those selected documents that were essential for establishing of antidrug policy and development this policy has undergone from the beginning until now. My paper examines progress and changes in labeling the problem itself, labeling of actual users and approach to proposed solutions. Analysis of content focuses on hidden meanings in the language used and uncovers attitudes and opinions of the authors in regard of drug problem. My study also describes the development of antidrug policy in Czech Republic during the above mentioned period and in this context describes and labels those aspects of system of values that have served as basis for key documents of antidrug policy. As a theoretical framework I have chosen a theory based on premiss that language used by authors of the documents also has impact on the situation of the actual users themselves.

Trump's New America: Identity, Discourse and Foreign Policy
Delmastro, Matthew ; Ditrych, Ondřej (advisor) ; Tesař, Jakub (referee)
This study focuses on the construction of American identity over time as it relates to U.S. foreign policy. It is based on the insights of poststructuralism and variants of discourse theory. In particular, the study depicts the historical development of identity representations within U.S. foreign policy discourse from 2008 to 2020, in order to demonstrate how the ongoing construction of identity enabled Donald Trump's disruptive foreign policy. Much of identity research in IR focuses on Self/Other relationships and understudies affirmative representations of identity. The current study fills this research gap by examining processes of affirmative linking in the construction of identity. The main results of the study found that the Trump administration's identity representations radically diverged from those of the Obama administration. The latter articulated America predominantly as a leader in the world, while the former reconstructed American identity as one of being a victim. However, two representations of American identity stayed constant: America as an inspiration to others and America as a force for good in the world.

Securitization of Migration in the 2017 French Presidential Election
Krutá, Gréta ; Ditrych, Ondřej (advisor) ; Kaleta, Ondřej (referee)
Far-right parties and anti-immigration moods were on the rise in 2017 European politics. After Brexit vote and Donald Trump's triumph in the US elections, whole world was watching the 2017 French presidential election with great vigilance. Using the method of discourse analysis, the principal objective of this master thesis is to identify to what extent was the immigration constructed as security threat in presidential election and how did major presidential candidates use political discourse for identity construction - positive representation of French Self and negative representation of Migrant Other. For the purpose of analysis, first three presidential candidates with the largest share of votes were chosen: François Fillon, Marine Le Pen and Emmanuel Macron. Concerning the theoretical framework, all research stems from Copenhagen school which defines vital concepts for our research: societal security and securitization process. From methodological point of view, Lene Hansen's Self/Other identity construction model is used. Šimečková, Michaela ; Fialová, Ludmila (advisor) ; Kocourková, Jiřina (referee) ; Hašková, Hana (referee)
Being an Older Mother: Metamorphoses of Late Motherhood from the Foundation of Czechoslovakia up to the Present Abstract The doctoral thesis gives a macro-structural view of the metamorphoses of late motherhood, here defined as motherhood of women aged over 35, as they have occurred in the Czech lands between 1920 and 2015. The study examines to which extent the reflection of late motherhood in selected professional and feminine / lifestyle periodicals converges with the findings derived from demographic data analysis. For this purpose, a mixed methods research has been conducted to link the conclusions from quantitative analysis of demographic data (demographic analysis and binary logistic regression) to those from qualitative and quantitative media analyses (discourse and content analyses). As the study shows, the development of late motherhood in the Czech lands varies across a range of possible perceptions in the media, levels and fertility rates. The thesis shows a strong coherence between the perception of late motherhood in the media and conclusions drawn from the demographic data analysis, which are consistent for most of the observed years. According to the results of the analysis, with some simplification, five different types of late motherhood are determined. The first type, the "Experienced...
