Breathing Rate Estimation from the ECG and PPG Signals

This bachelor’s thesis is focused on breath rate estimation. In this thesis, methods of breath rate estimation from the ECG and PPG signal are described and implemented. In the first two chapters the basics of ECG measurements are described, as well as the measurements of the respiratory system activity and the PPG signal. The third chapter then describes the ECG/PPG-derived respiratory signal estimation methods, later on the breath rate determination. In the fourth chapter, chosen methods are implemented and the created algorithms are applied on real data from the BIDMC database.

The main idea was to choose a child as a measure of design. Immerse yourself in his world and his perception of space - keep in mind his needs. What did the place where he would be able to recover from respiratory problems look like? Was she in the hospital? What kind of room was that? What was that for? place? Did nature play any meaning in that? Would you like to go back there? How does she remember him? The aim was to create a place that resembles the hospital environment as little as possible, is in direct contact with nature and attracts to get to know it more. The stay in the hospital should be more reminiscent of spending holidays at school in nature. How to avoid austere hospital premises? Is there such a guide at all? Should I draw inspiration elsewhere? Where do we go to gain strength from everyday worries? In nature, of course. And how does this need translate into architecture? And we have at all such architecture? The answer to the questions I asked was the cottage. House created for a stay in nature. But how to lift it to something richer and more interesting? There was something else that fascinated me as a child spending time in Luhačovice - the spa environment. How these two forms to connect?
Gradually increasing maximum inspiratory resistance during respiratory muscle training and its effect on respiratory function in chronic tetraplegia

The theoretical part of the thesis describes basic mechanisms of spinal cord injuries, summarizes respiratory complications of spinal cord injuries and the use of respiratory physiotherapy with emphasis on breathing trainers. The practical part of the thesis focuses on the effect of 6 week long inspiratory muscle training using the Threshold IMT or Powerbreathe breathing trainer on respiratory functions in patients with chronic tetraplegia, as well as comparing the results of the study with available research exploring the same issue. The research included one experimental group consisting of 15 probands. All probands underwent measurement of spirometry parameters prior to the therapeutic intervention and again after six weeks of breathing training. A total of six respiratory parameters were evaluated (FVC, FEV1, PEF, PCF, MIP, MEP). From the results of the study, it can be concluded that breathing training showed positive effects on all of these parameters, but statistically significant difference was demonstrated only in the parameters evaluating the strength of the inspiratory (MIP) and expiratory (MEP) muscles.
Changes in ventilatory parameters in survivors after severe COVID-19 associated pneumonia

Background and Aims COVID-19 disease can cause severe bilateral pneumonia which manifests as a restrictive pulmonary disease in the post-acute phase, raising the question of whether this post-acute impairment may persist and lead to long-term consequences. The aim of this thesis was to find out whether patients in the post- acute phase of COVID-19 suffer from respiratory disorders and possibly whether these disorders persist even after 6 months, using the analysis of spirometry data, such as vital capacity (VC), forced vital capacity (FVC), and Tiffeneau index (FEV1/FVC). Methods A retrospective analysis of the prospective cohort COMETA study examining patients with confirmed bilateral COVID-19 pneumonia was conducted. 42 patients were examined at baseline in the post-acute phase of COVID-19 (visit A) and 36 of them participated also in the examination after 6 months (visit C). The Student's t- test was used to compare parameters with a normal distribution. For the parameters with non-normal distribution, the Mann-Whitney test was used. Influence of respiratory rehabilitation on lung function in patients after COVID-19 pneumonia.

This diploma thesis focuses on the comparison of the measured values of selected spirometric parameters (FVC, FEV1, PEF) and the results of quality of life questionnaires (Karnofsky score and Jones shortbreathness score) in two groups, one of which had a prescribed rehabilitation program and the other was a control group. The theoretical part summarizes knowledge about the disease COVID-19 and its immediate and long-term impact, especially on the respiratory system. It also deals with the use of specific methods of respiratory rehabilitation in patients who have experienced the disease of COVID-19. The main goal of the practical part is to verify the effect of respiratory rehabilitation - a prescribed rehabilitation program on lung functions in patients after pneumonia caused by the disease COVID-19. Methodology: A total of 20 patients (average age 60±11,04 years) after pneumonia caused by the disease COVID-19 were included in the research, of which 10 followed the prescribed rehabilitation program. Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a progressive muscular disease. This serious disease attacks not only the musculoskeletal system, but also the respiratory system. Respiratory system is one of the most influenced systems. The risks of respiratory problems increase with deteriorating condition of the patient due to muscle weakness. This work is focused on treatment of respiratory system. The aim of treatment is early prevention and solving of complications. These complications include not only scoliosis and cardial problems, but mainly inefficient cough, night hypoventilation, irregular night breathing and failure of respiratory system even during the day. The aim of the respiratory physiotherapy is to keep the right functionality of lungs for the longest time and to choose the correct method of the rehabilitation following the patient's condition deteriorating. Interventions suitable for the patients with the DMD are techniques that leads to increasing lung volume, manual and mechanical techniques of assisted coughing, and noninvasive ventilation. Definition of new referential values of maximum inspiratory and expiratory pressures and P0.1 values in normal population of the 16 - to - 17 age range

The purpose of this thesis is to define norms for inspiratory (Pimax) and expiratory (Pemax) pressures and mouth occlusion pressure (P0.1) in healthy white population of the 16-17 age group in the Czech Republic, specifically the capital city of Prague and its close vicinity. Furthermore, this work aspires to ascertain whether there is a correlation between the respiratory pressures, P0.1 and selected anthropometric and pulmonary values. In order to define the norms, 79 children were tested, including 41 boys and 38 girls 16 to 17 years old. After establishing the subjects' case histories, anthropometric, spirometric inspiratory, expiratory and forced vital capacity measurements were made. The study defined the norms of respiratory pressures and P0.1 in 16 to 17-year-old boys and girls, thus achieving its main goal. Furthermore, a difference was found between the average measured Pimax and Pemax values for boys and girls, with the boys showing higher values comparing with the girls. The study did not ascertain a correlation between respiratory pressures, P0.1 and selected anthropometric values (age, height, weight, BMI, BSA). Monitoring of lung function impairment by infectious disease COVID-19 using spirometry

The thesis is focused on the comparison of functional examination of the patients lungs, before and after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), as well as on the comparison of physiological data for a individual person with measured values after the disease. The relationship between lung function and smoking, sex, age and time gap after COVID undergone was monitored. The screening was accomplished by spirometry in a pneumology surgery and the obtained data were processed in practical part of my thesis. The theoretical part of the diploma thesis describes the respiratory system and lungs functional testing. In addition, infectious disease COVID-19 is described herein. The aim of the thesis was to select suitable patients, who have suffered from the COVID-19 disease, but without other serious respiratory problems, make a measurements and statistically evaluate the correlation between the measured results. The experiment involved 66 people aged between 21-94, of which 43 were men and 23 women. It has been shown a predominantly negative effect of COVID-19 in the values of the examined indicators in spirometric measurements, similarly, the impairment was seen more in men than in women. Biomechanical chracteristics of nonstationary respiration as possible identificator of tiredeness under hypokinetic loading

The general topic of this work is to reveal the potential relationship between tiredness cause by hypokinetic monotonous loading and breathing. The aim was to determine if there are suitable respiratory parameters that would indicate this tirednes and, if so, then verify their validity for predicting the tiredness phenomena accompanying huge range of everyday human activities. The performed experiment was attended by five volunteers who absolved measurements of electrical activity of brain, of breathing and of chest volume changes. The course of the experiment and the behaviour of probands were recorded by a camera. In the first part of each maesuremnt, a specified monotonous task (Task Tracking) was performed. The probands have had to follow the target moving with pseudocasual direction and speed by the cursor on the monitor. This task currently reflected the level of reliability and quality of the performed aktivity. In the second part of measurement, the probands had just to relax and watch a movie. Both parts were measured in two conditions - alert and tired (after 24 hours of sleep deprivation) proband. The data were compared with each other and evaluated. Power output and selected cardiorespiratory parameters in elite athletes during the third to fourth week after COVID-19 infection

Title: Power output and selected cardiorespiratory parameters in elite athletes during the third to fourth week after COVID-19 infection Objectives: The aim of this thesis is to compare power output and selected cardiorespiratory parameters in elite athletes before and three to four weeks after COVID- 19 infection. Since the elite athletes undergo these health checks on a yearly basis, it is possible to compare the data before and immediately after the infection without difficulty. Methods: This thesis has a character of a quantitative research based on testing the outcomes with confirming or denying hypotheses. Out of the total of 64 elite athletes with the CPET data after the infection 17 athletes, fulfilling other criteria, were selected. I was provided with the data by Centrum sportovní medicíny z. s.. These values became the foundation for statistical hypotheses testing. Analysis of the data was done by means of a pair t-test in R software. Results: There were no significant differences in the majority of the spirometry parameters. Only the inspiration vital capacity was significantly higher (p = 0,004) after the COVID-19 infection in 14 athletes with 0,21±0,18 l improvement.
