The Strategic Defence Initiative Program (SDI) in the Context of the British-American Relationship
Dopieralla, Jakub ; Soukup, Jaromír (advisor) ; Hudec, Jiří (referee)
The bachelor thesis The Strategic Defence Initiative Program (SDI) in the Context of the British-American Relationship analyses the British view on the strategic defense programme, which was proclaimed in March 1983. It aims to find out whether the development of SDI meant a breaking point for the British- American Relationship, or it merely served as an opportunity to realize the possibilities offered by the relation. After a brief characteristic of the "Special Relationship" and its development since World War II, the main focus is put on the era of Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan and their mutual interactions concerning SDI. It describes the journey from the proclamation of SDI through the signing of the participation agreement with Great Britain to the ending of the Cold War and also the factors that influenced the British attitude during this time. The era of Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan is generally viewed as a time of peak intensity of the Special Relationship, the best since the times of World War II.

Potůček, Ondřej ; Horčička, Václav (advisor) ; Koura, Jan (referee)
Diploma thesis Special Relationship? British-U.S. Relations, 1979-1990 examines the nature of relations between the United Kingdom and the United States, focusing predominantly on the period of parallel governance of Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan. The aim is to study both the extent to which the relationship was genuinely special and anticipations both countries connected with it. Providing an overview of the development of the special relationship after the WWII the paper addresses foreign, political, economic and ideological bonds between the countries and their political leaders. It considers not only the basic similarities of domestic and foreign policies, but also tensions and conflicts accompanying this alliance. The paper also describes the influence of the special relationship on the relations with European states and the Soviet Union. The uniqueness of the special relationship is identified in both the nuclear, defence and intelligence cooperation and in the British Prime Minister's and American President's ideological and political comprehension.
British policy towards South Africa during the premiership of Margaret Thatcher
Lellák, Jan ; Váška, Jan (advisor) ; Smetana, Vít (referee)
This bachelor thesis "British Policy towards South Africa during the premiership of Margaret Thatcher, 1979-1990" attempts to describe and evaluate the most important influences that shaped the policy-making towards South Africa during the premiership of Margaret Thatcher. The emphasis is placed on describing the factors that led to the imposition of sanctions against the South Africa's apartheid regime. It considers the various factors that influenced the policy- making, especially in the economic, political, social, strategic and normative-value areas. Foreign policy towards South Africa was a relatively important part of the premiership of Margaret Thatcher especially in the context of the Cold War. Thatcher, thanks to her opposition to the sanctions, was frequently criticised both at home and abroad. She insisted that the British government consistently pursued its interests in South Africa by promoting a policy of constructive engagement, which attempted to reduce the impact they had on the government in Pretoria. Thatcher's period coincides approximately with the period of breakup of the apartheid regime in South Africa. This adds an additional angle from which the formation of British policy towards South Africa during the end of the Cold War can be viewed.
Comparison of Thatcherism and New Labour on the Example of Their Approach to the Welfare State
Šimunská, Petra ; Váška, Jan (advisor) ; Rovná, Lenka (referee)
Thatcherism and New Labour represent British version of the New Right and the Third Way - ideological approaches which influenced many Western countries in the last two decades of the 20th century and at the beginning of the 21st century. The similarities between Thatcherism and New Labour have been the source of considerable academic and political discussion. This study is focused on the welfare state and governmental measures and reforms in social security system. The research is designed as comparative study based on data analysis of secondary and primary sources. This thesis aims to define key similarities and differences of proposed ideologies. It suggests that the main difference between Thatcherism and New Labour is grounded in their primary understanding of the role of the welfare state system in society and related long term policies rather than in intended short term targets and reforms. Moreover, the influence of these ideas on policy making process of Thatcher and Blair governments is discussed.
The Falklands War and its Impact on Domestic Policy in Great Britain
Štefan, Ondřej ; Soukup, Jaromír (advisor) ; Opatrný, Aleš (referee)
The main goal of my thesis is to analyze the influence and impact of the Falklands War on the domestic policy in Great Britain during the conflict and after the conflict. The main question is how much the Falklands War influenced the public opinion and if it was the major or minor reason why the Conservative party won the general elections for the House of Commons which was held in June 1983. To understand the chain of events and importance of the islands for both concerned countries (United Kingdom and Argentina) I describe the historical context of the Falklands dispute first. After that I analyze the complicated political development in Great Britain during the first Margaret Thatcher's electoral term. The analyses of the course of the war, international peacekeeping efforts and results of the conflict take place in the third chapter. The final and the most important chapter is about the impact and the influence of the war on the British domestic policy, public opinion and the elections in 1983.

Růt, Štěpán ; Kovář, Martin (advisor) ; Soběhart, Radek (referee)
The diploma thesis analyzes the changes in transport policy during the time of Thatcher and Major conservative governments. It tries to answer why the traffic situation resulted in a permanent break with the concept raised in the 1940s by labour government. The changes are associated with principles of Thatcherism which also influenced the transport industry. The contribution of the work consists of creating a compact view of the privatization of bus and rail transport, including consideration and evaluation of options and results. Both the same and different elements of the privatization of two transport sectors are mentioned. Author uses information from contemporary sources obtained in the National Archives, London-Kew as well as modern literature and scientific studies.
