The Literary Reception of Max Picard's Works

The thesis treats the subject of how the work of Max Picard, Rainer Maria Rilke and Jan Zahradníček relate. Its unifying element is the motif of salvation, its negative and positive aspect. Picard, Rilke, and Zahradníček perceive the world overfilled with technology and become witnesses of dehumanisation of humans and the related destruction of speech. Their work mirrors this decomposition, but it alongside offers a positive counter movement, an alternative to the age of dominion of technology. A comparative analysis of the specific understanding of the two aspects of salvation also casts light on the reception of Max Picard in their work. The first part deals with the analysis of Heidegger's essence (Wesen) of modern technology (Gestell) and the possibility of alternative revealing (poiésis). It renders the transformation of a human beings and their relationship to things, a transformation diagnosed by Picard, Rilke, and Zahradníček in their work. It thus proposes a context for the observed motif of salvation. The introduction of the first part accounts for a treatise on the loss of a thing which is linked to the penetration of technology and on salvation consisting in paying heed to the inconspicuous state of affairs. Zahradníček's Sign of Power

The aim of this thesis is to interpret Jan Zahradnicek's spacious poem The Sign of Power. The interpretation crystallizes around the motifs of dehumanisation (connected with Nietzsche's motif of nihilism and of the last man) of a man, the loss of a word, discontinuity, the loss of time, the human face, nothingness (specific Nothingness) and the possibility of salvation, connected with an awakening of the sight. There are two semantic lines essential for enlightening these motifs: Dante's Divine Comedy and Picard's works of the late 40s. Zahradnicek wrote The Sign of Power during 1950-1951, at the time of his intense work on the translation of Dante's Divine Comedy. The purpose of the first part of this thesis is to illustrate how strongly the Divine Comedy influenced the key motifs of The Sign of Power. The purpose of the second part of the thesis is to uncover a new semantic context for the interpretation of Zahradnicek's poem; the works of Swiss essayist, philosopher and poet Max Picard, which were of great importance for Zahradnicek's poem. I see the exposition of Picard's specific grasp of the key modern phenomena, which penetrated to Zahradnicek's poem, as the further objective of the work. Rilke's Novel Die Aufzeichungen des Malte Laurids Brigge in Czech Translations

The diploma thesis deals with two translations of Rilke's novel Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge. Each translation is not only conceived as a final product, but also as a communication process, influenced by a number of cultural and socio-political factors. The thesis therefore attempts to capture changes in Rilke's reception in relation to the literary paradigm and - with regards to the political situation - to the contemporary publisher policy, because during the period of socialism Rilke's work, which was highly valued in the thirties, came back into general awareness quite slowly in connection with the gradual liberation of cultural and political situation. The goal of the thesis is to map the problems of the translations' genesis with regards to the period and cultural environment and to the translators' poetic style. Part of the thesis addresses a translatological analysis, which is the base for defining both of the translators' methods.
Zahradníček's Akord

The thesis focuses on Jan Zahradníček, a Czech poet, at the time when he was the editor of Akord, a literary magazine, and provides an analysis of this activity. The core of the thesis is preceded by chapters introducing the issues of the poet's life and work and providing basic information about the previous period of the magazine. Then I try to expound how Zahradníček edited the magazine and against what unfavourable circumstances he had to fight during the occupation and after the liberation. I characterize the basic contents of individual volumes, sections and their changes, and the texts of the most significant contributors. An important part of the thesis is a bibliography of Zahradníček's Akord of 1940-1948, a name index and a subject index.
Jan Zahradníček and his poetry in the 1940-1950s

The thesis is focused on the creation of Jan Zahradníček in the 40th and 50th years of 20th century, namely collections of Rouška Veroničina, La Salleta, Znamení moci. Dům strachu and Čtyři léta. The aim of this thesis is to show exclusivity and specifics of these collections. The thesis analyzes the collection in the terms of composition, rhythm and motive, and monitors their individual transformations. All with taking into account the importance of historical context of the period in which these works were created. At the end we present prison Poetry of Zahradníček as a specific, non-contextual genre that does not have analogues in Czech literature. Manuscripts VBF

In the days of normalization there was a lot of groups in Czechoslovakia which were spreading the literature, which couldnt be published in the state's publishers. Manuscripts VBF was one of them. This edition was different because it focused on publishing collected works of three authors, who had been already not alive. Manuscript VBF was established on the beginning of seventieths by Bedřich Fučík and Vladimír Binar to publish Jakub Deml's writtings. The Jakub Deml's writtings was orginized to fourteen volumes. Thirteen of them were being published since 1978 to 1983, the fourteenth one wasn't finished. Meanwhile the decision came to publish also Jan Zahradníček's writtings and Jan Čep's writtings. Vladimír Binar prepared Bedřich Fučík's writtings after Bedřich Fučík had died. There was a side product called Bibliotheca of Manuscripts VBF, in which some works of the organizators and their friends were published. The thesis includes an annotative bibliography of the edition and an interview with Vladimir Binar. The purpose of this thesis was to make a bibliography of Manuscripts VBF, compile information about this edition and add a worthful witness of one of its organizators - Vladimír Binar.
František Hrubín´s "New country" versus Jan Zahradníček´s "Old country"

The study is based on analysis and comparison of the motifs of "old" and "new" country in Hrubín's poem Jobova noc (The Night of Job) and Zahradníček's book of poetry Stará země (The Old Country).
