Beyond Postmodernism: Oscillation, Reparation and Affect in Contemporary Dutch Novels
Krýsová, Anna ; Komrzý Sedláčková, Lucie (advisor) ; T`Sjoen, Yves (referee) ; Demeyer, Hans (referee)
in English This dissertation deals with the shift toward affect and the legacy of modernism and postmodernism in contemporary Dutch novels. Its main concern is: How can the reading practice of scholars do justice to the shift towards affective concerns in contemporary Dutch literature without repeating the tendency to declare this to be a new period? This research question sums up issues raised by three scholarly debates led around contemporary Dutch literature in the last 15 years. The dissertation is structured around my contribution to these three sub-questions raised by secondary literature. The theoretical outlines of this contribution sketched in Chapter 1 are illustrated and tested out by an analysis of three contemporary Dutch novels. The first debate poses the question of periodization: (1) Is postmodernism over, and if it is, how is this visible in literary production? Hidden behind the periodizing debate is a methodological problem: is the literary historiographical approach, traditionally inspired by the idea of bounded and successive periods a methodologically sound way to approach contemporary literature? Analysing Zonder noorden komt niemand thuis by Nelleke Noordervliet shows clearly that contemporary novels should be read rather through an emphasis on the continuity with previous...
Experiencing loss of child
Světlíková, Zora ; Loneková, Katarína (advisor) ; Štětovská, Iva (referee)
The diploma thesis "Experiencing the loss of a child" deals with the psychological aspects of adaptation to the loss of a child. Its main objective is to analyse the supporting factors that help the adaptation and to find out how such loss influences individuals and their subsequent life. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on the issue of the loss of a close person and details the specifics of the loss of a child. Based on available literature the author explores the process of grieving and its manifestations and determines the variables that influence the adaptation to child loss. She also evaluates the impact of the child loss on the individual and the potential for intervention in the process. The empirical part determines the factors that help to cope with such loss, describes, how the loss influences the life of the individual and focuses on the needs of the bereaved parents. The data gathering consisted of ten individual in-depth interviews with women which experienced the loss of a child. These interviews were then qualitatively analysed using the IPA (Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis) method. Based on the results of the qualitative analysis we identified four main support aspects of adaptation to child loss - social support, individual activity, professional help and faith....
Binding of trace elements to colloids in MSW landfill leachates
Matura, Marek ; Ettler, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Pitter, Pavel (referee) ; Faimon, Jiří (referee)
1 SUMMARY The association of trace elements with colloids in leachates from closed and active municipal solid waste (MSW) was studied using the cascade filtration/ultrafiltration method. A study was carried out after long-term monitoring of seasonal variations of the leachate quality. Both landfills are situated in the vicinity of Prague and the closed landfill site represents a serious environmental risk for part of this city. In the first step, the evaluation of the long-term seasonal changes in the main and trace element contents in leachate from the closed landfill was performed and supplemented by investigation of precipitation/dissolution processes in the solid phases. It was shown that the quality of the leachate is strongly influenced by rain events, which are responsible for the dissolution of calcite and Fe oxides in the landfill body. This process leads to the release of Cu, Zn and Cd bound to these solid phases and to an increase in their concentrations in the leachate. The contents of the other element are significantly decreased by simple dilution. Therefore, the mobility of all the studied elements increases substantially during rain events. Monitoring of the seasonal variation in the leachate quality enabled us to determine the appropriate conditions for isolated sampling for studying the...

The role of infectious diseases in the development and progression of renal graft dysfunction
Drenko, Petr ; Reischig, Tomáš (advisor) ; Hrabák, Jaroslav (referee) ; Dedinská, Ivana (referee)
Infectious diseases and their impact on the development and progression of renal graft dysfunction Infectious diseases represent a significant risk factor for morbidity and mortality among organ transplant recipients. In renal transplant recipients, infectious complications are the most common cause of death with preserved graft function. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is one of the most common opportunistic infections after solid organ transplantation. Despite the routine use of modern preventive measures, CMV infection puts kidney transplant recipients at higher risk of graft failure and mortality. In addition to direct action, CMV also has an immunomodulatory ability that is associated with an increased risk of T-lymphocyte-mediated and possibly antibody-mediated graft rejection in particular, both of which limit long-term allograft survival. The two main strategies for CMV prevention include (1) universal prophylaxis with treatment of all patients at risk (according to donor-recipient serostatus) with antiviral drugs and (2) preventive therapy based on CMV monitoring and treatment of only selected patients with significant viral replication (DNAemia). The current International Consensus Guidlines consider both strategies equivalent in patients after kidney transplantation, even in the high- risk...
Medieval settlement in the middle stream of the river Bystrice
Drnovský, Pavel ; Klápště, Jan (advisor) ; Štefan, Ivo (referee)
The present study deals with the selected chapters of a medieval settlement in the territory lying along the middle stream of the river Bystřice in northeastern Bohemia. This area is consistent with the surroundings towns Hořice and Miletín. Introductory section evaluates the material and written sources. The main part of the study devoted to the development settlement is divided into several basic sections. Because of declining value of archaeological findings, came mostly from fieldwalking is put emphasis mainly on the study of Early and early Middle Ages. Before 13th century early medieval settlement did not beyond the boundaries old settled area. On several of early medieval settlements is documented continuity of settlement dating back to the 13th century, when most of settlements were abandoned. In the 13th century also were created an absolutely new settlement, which is located near the old sites, or in areas where early medieval sites were not recorded. Most of these sites disappeared at the end of the 13th century or the early 14th century. In the vicinity of these sites we often found present villages. Other sections deal with the issue of churches, cemeteries and deserted medieval villages with an emphasis on residences of the landowners. Part of the study is a catalog of all medieval...
Drug prevention in secondary schools
Čermák, Martin ; Rajsiglová, Ina (advisor) ; Janštová, Vanda (referee)
Drugs seem to be really hot topic discussed especially at high schools. Not only the particular drug addicted person but also the entire society and even the state have to face to many risks. School institutions should become one of the places where the primary steps of prevention should be implemented. In order to prepare proper topics and themes for discussions and meetings against drug use, it is important to know which drugs are used and preferred by young Prague citizens. The main aim of this thesis is to map the real situation that exists in the area of drug us in Prague. That is why a survey - based on a questionnaire - was carried out to gather the data to be able to analyze the differences that exist among the students of high schools, especially grammar schools and vocational schools as well as the boys and girls. The theoretical part of the thesis is focused on detailed information about particular drugs and mapping of the situation that exists in this area in Poland, Austria, Slovakia and Germany. Depositional architectures, stratigraphy, and depositional regime of Upper Turonian sandstone bodies, northwestern part of the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin
Vacková, Lenka ; Uličný, David (advisor) ; Bábek, Ondřej (referee)
This diploma thesis presents a synthesis of fieldwork and well-log data of the Upper- Turonian sandstone bodies in the northwestern part of the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin. There was no previous research based on method of the sequence stratigraphy and correlation well-logs. I made 13 measured sedimentological cross-sections that were correlated to stratigraphical cross section along depositional dip and strike. Structures of the Upper Turonian sandstones (genetic sequences TUR 5 - 7) are dominated by trough cross bedding that migrate on a slightly inclined delta slope (1 - 5ř). The main direction of paleocurrents is towards SE or E. The analysis of thicknesses of parasequences (for TUR 4 - TUR 7) gives trend of thinning parasequences through time. Increasing content of the potassium is evident within sequences TUR 4 to TUR 7. It is independent on the grain-size, but indicates rapid transport from the source area.
Využití lišejníků-možnosti využití Evropské metodiky pro mapování epifytických lišejníků
Svoboda, David ; Váňa, Jiří (advisor) ; Scheidegger, Christoph (referee) ; Bérešová, Anna (referee)
Lichen uses - potentials of the European Guideline for mapping lichen diversity David Svoboda My projects had one common feature, namely the application of the European Guideline for mapping lichen diversity as an indicator of environmental stress (Asta et al. 2002). This methodology was developed in an effort to make a standardised protocol for European screening of epiphytic lichens for various purposes. The dissertation is focused on selected topics and the main objectives can be summarised as follows: 1) To evaluate the potential of the LDV method for determination of general air pollution, and the possibility of applying the new methodology in the Czech Republic. 2) To compare results given by the LDV method and the older qualitative method by Hawksworth and Rose (1970). 3) To determine the principal factors influencing the epiphytic lichen distribution in Central European oak forests, and to elucidate possible correlations among natural and human caused environmental factors in a large scale study. 4) To investigate the epiphytic lichens living in temperate oak forests, their features and possible lichenological differentiations; to determine indicative species for old growth forests and natural woodlands under different climatic conditions and human influence in the Central Europe. 5) To determine...
Play behaviour of Hanuman langur (Semnopithecus entellus)
Petrů, Milada ; Špinka, Marek (advisor) ; Sedláček, František (referee) ; Nekovářová, Tereza (referee)
2 Summary Play is very interesting part of behaviour. Despite of broad interest it still remains insufficiently well-researched. Researchers try to describe play behaviour and explain the ontogenesis and answer one of the most important questions about function of play behaviour. These are the main topics that I deal with in my Ph.D. thesis, specifically with detail analysis of play behaviour based on data obtained from own video-recording of play behaviour of free- ranging Hanuman langurs (Semnopithecus entellus) in Bhangarh locality in northwest India. Goal of the Ph.D. thesis is to analyze several aspects of play behaviour. First goal was characteristic of play behaviour and its categories and compiling of play ethogram. Self- handicapping is in the centre of interest of my study of play behaviour. This behaviour is typical and unique for play and has not been satisfactorily explained. In first paper included in my Ph.D. thesis I analysed patterns of ethogram of play behaviour of Hanuman langurs and other monkey species. Results showed that self-handicapping patterns and pattern dissimilar to "serious" behaviour can constitute a major part of play repertoire. Play behaviour is very variable and different parts may have different function. In second publication we analyzed in detail performance and...
