Computational modelling of blood flow in the carotid artery with serial stenosis

The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to analyse the effect of double stenosis on flow and stress characteristics in the carotid artery. First, based on the stated literature, a literature search is conducted regarding blood flow in the arterial system. Then, the procedure of creating idealized models of an artery with double stenosis and the procedure of mesh creation and numerical solution are described. The models have different size of the stenosis and different distance between stenosis. In the final stage, the results are analysed first for stationary flow, then one model is selected on which is performed the analysis for pulsating flow. Analytical calculation of pressure drop and comparison with numerical calculation is also part of this work.
Early Stages of Fatigue Damage of Steels for Fusion Energetics

Hlavním cílem této práce bylo vysvětlit únavové chování ocelí ODS Eurofer, 14Cr ODS feritické oceli vyráběné v CEA (Commissariat a l’énergie atomique, Saclay, France) a 14Cr ODS feritické oceli vyráběné v EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Laussane, Switzerland). Pokud to bylo možné byly získané výsledky porovnány s ocelí Eurofer 97. Tato práce je součástí široké spolupráce, která je zaměřena na vývoj konstrukčních materiálů pro fuzní reaktory. V průběhu práce byly provedeny následující experimenty: • Standardní únavové zkoušky za pokojové teploty, při 650 a při 750 , byly získány křivky cyklického zpevnění/změkčení, cyklické deformační křivky, Coffinovy–Mansonovy a Wöhlerovi křivky. Hysterezní smyčky byly detailně analyzovány. • Pozorování mikrostruktury výchozího stavu pomocí TEM a porovnání s mikrostrukturou po cyklickém zatížení. • Pozorování povrchového reliéfu, který vznik díky lokalizaci cyklické plastické deformace - byla odhalena místa iniciace únavových trhlin a byl analyzován mechanismus jejich vzniku. • Měření kinetiky únavových trhlin. Oxidická disperse značně zpevňuje materiály, redukuje cyklické změkčení a stabilizuje mikrostrukturu v celém rozsahu teplot. Byly nalezeny velké rozdíly v životnosti jednotlivých ocelí. Ty byly vysvětleny pomocí rozdílných mechanismů iniciace trhlin a jejich různou rychlostí.
Computational modelling of the influence of stenoses on blood flow in the carotid artery

This diploma thesis deals with blood flow in carotid artery with tandem double stenosis. In the first part there is described cardiovascular system with emphasis on blood and arteries. In the practical part, geometric models of the carotid artery with 30% and 70% stenosis, as well as a model without stenosis, are created. The second stenosis is not included in the model of geometry but modeled using Windkessel effect. Blood is modeled as a non-Newtonian fluid using the Carreau model. After the calculations, the blood flow and arterial wall stress are evaluated, and the results are compared among the different geometry models. Critical values of shear stress, TAWSS, OSI, and FFR, as well as the mass flow rate in the internal carotid artery, are assessed.

Petr Knobloch, Dr., DSc., Department of Numerical Mathematics Abstract: Numerical solution of the scalar convection-diffusion-reaction problems often possesses spurious oscillations which appear in the discrete solution when convection dominates diffusion and standard non-adaptive discretizations are used. Numerical solution of convection-dominated problems requires special techniques to suppress these oscillations. Often stabilized methods are applied which involve free parameters. These parameters significantly influence the quality of the solution but their optimal choice is usually not known. In this work we define them in an adaptive way by minimizing an error indicator characterizing the quality of the approximate solution. We consider new nonlinear limited-memory optimization methods. A nontrivial requirement on the error indicator is that its minimization with respect to the stabilization parameters should suppress spurious oscillations without smearing layers. Structure of submicrocrystalline materials studied by X-ray diffraction

Structure of submicrocrystalline materials was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction, mainly by modelling of widths and shapes of diffraction profiles. The diffraction method was applied to colloid gold nanoparticles, copper samples deformed by equal channel angular pressing and titanium dioxide nanoparticles prepared by various chemical routes. Dislocations and twin faults were identified in the metallic samples from characteristic broadening of diffraction lines. Densities of lattice defects were estimated from the diffraction data. Possibilities and limits of the diffraction method for characterisation of a crystallite size distribution were tested on the titanium dioxide samples. Crystallites of size in the range 3-25 nm could be well characterised. The problems were encountered only for samples with extremely broad size dispersion. Diffraction methods and a computer program were developed and tested, which can be applied also for the analysis of thin films.
