The Marian Book of Hours V H 36 in the National Museum in Prague.

The topic of this thesis are medieval prayer books of hours. Books of hours are especially the phenomenon of the 14th and 15th century and they are connected to higher society and court culture. First part of this thesis should outline the developement of private devotion and origins of books of hours. Second part aims to present typical iconography and decorations of book of hours. Third part concerns of an example book of hours conserved at the library of National Museum in Prague (shelf-mark KNM V H 36). By analyzing this manuscript I shall try to validate or specify their present place in evolution of book illumination. The foundational activities of the Markvartic family in North Bohemia in the context of 13th century Central European architecture

My diploma thesis is focused on the foundational activities of the Markvartic family which is one of the most prominent families in Northern Bohemia of its time. In terms of the investigated area and period, the diploma thesis is a continuation of the author's bachelor thesis which was focused on the foundational activities of the House of Wartenberg which had a common ancestor with the Markvartic family. The work's focus is the evaluation of relics of preserved buildings in historical and cultural context, where their original feature was changed by later building measures. Every object will be described and analyzed using secondary literature, material and literary sources. The result of this method will be a short synthesis including the outline buildings stages of objects and their style evaluation. This method will be applied on the background of historical contexts, which represent connections of the Markvartics and royal court and the Cisterciensis, Dominicans and Johanites Order.

Kutná Hora Antiphonary from the prague workshop of Valentine Noh of Jindřichův Hradec

The goal of this work is a monographic treatment of the Kutná Hora Antiphonary (Prague, NK XXIII A 2) from 1470-1471 in the context of the Prague workshop of Valentine Noh of Jindřichův Hradec. Its creator belongs to the generation of illuminators who helped to integrate, transform and overcome the heritage of the beautiful style tradition. The newly emerging style system significantly influenced book painting of the second half of the 15th century and the early 16th century. The work is based mostly on a combination of formal and iconographic analysis. The outcome of this work should be a refinement of the information on decoration and a summary assessment of the significance of the Kutná Hora Antiphonary for the development of book painting in our territory in the 2nd half of the 15th century and the early 16th century.

Interior Decoration of Saint Catherine Crypt in Saint Stephan's Church in Kouřim

The topic of the bachelor thesis is recently uncovered mural paintings in Saint Catherine chapel in Saint Stephan's Church in Kouřim. Mural paintings were recovered in 2002 and since that time they have been the subject of art-historical research. I would like to contribute with this work to enlarge art-historical knowledge about this extraordinary work and also to offer a new view to chosen problems related to this subject matter. The complex of mural paintings is set to art-historical context of the town Kuřim and its surroundings. The work partially concerns the history of Saint Stephan's Church , which is connected with image of figures of donators on one of the mural paintings and their identification. The importance and the function of the complex of the saint Catherine chapel is decribed. The consecration to Saint Catherine is substantiated, which is linked up with unique picture of twenty -four angels with musical instruments. The work also pay attention to iconography of the whole image with appointing art paralels from Bohemia /from iconographical to style/. The Illuminated Manuscripts of Jan IV of Dražice

The Diploma thesis "The Illuminated Manuscripts of Jan IV of Dražice" is devoted to a set of illuminated manuscripts connected with a last bishop of Prague Jan IV of Dražice. After briefly summary and assesment of topical literature is in the next part of thesis appreciation of donation activities of Jan IV of Dražice. The emphasis is on his sojourn in Avignon and his donation activities in Prague and Roudnice nad Labem. Jan IV had an important influence to the development of illumination production in the Czech Countries. The goal of this diploma work is differentiation and monographic interpretation of manuscript's corpse connected with a figure of Jan IV of Dražice. Appreciation of donation activities of Jan IV z Dražic in cultural and historical time framework is mainly focused on explanation of his contribution to the development of illumination production in the Czech Countries. Work is mainly based on combination of methods of formal, iconographic and basic codicological analysis and where possible on iconological intepretation.

Německý Brod Gradual by Paul of Mělník from 1506

The presented dissertation thesis called " Německý Brod graduale by Paul Melnik in 1506" is bound to my bachelor thesis, which also dealt with manuscript from the Paul of Melnik's workshop. The introduction of the thesis summarizes the already existing literature on the topic (Chap. 1). Then the following chapters are focused on the illuminator of the studied graduale (Chap. 2.1); they are also engaged in the questionable issues of provenance and dating the graduale, which is allegedly dated in 1506, however, the illumination contained in it rather refers to the graphic analogy (ies) of A. Dürer, which was (were) issued not earlier than in 1511 (Chap. 2.2). The thesis also includes a chapter which is dedicated to the donator of the manuscript (Chap. 3.1). Moreover, there are emphasized problems of literary fraternity and art of Utraquism in Bohemia as well (Chap. 3.3). The chapter 3.2 tries to summarize the works of the illuminator Paul of Melnik, and also to describe his artistic character. The last chapters are devoted to the decoration of the graduale and to possible analogies within the illuminations (Chap. 4).

Zlutice Gradual

Zlutice gradual The goal of this work is to summarize literature for problems of genesis and decor of Zlutice gradual, further analyse its illuminations and also basic orientation in questions of analogies of its decor. Zlutice gradual is one of the best Renaissance manuscripts. Penman was Jan Taborsky from Klokotska Hora and his life and production is defined in the chapter 3.1. Fabian Puler was limner gradual and his creations are in the charter 3.2. He is one of the best limners of the 16th century. Decor of the gradual is described in the charter 4.2. Illuminations of gradual have conventional scheme choral manuscripts. A lot of analogies are found in the medieval manuscripts and also Renaissance manuscripts. There are elements of medieval literary paintwork, but also fully Renaissance elements: perfect linear perspective, high-quality scenery and brilliant anatomy. Zlutice gradual is one of the most beautiful and one of the costliest graduals of second half of the 16th century.

Gradual Paul of Melnik from 1530

Bachelor thesis called " Louny Gradual by Paul Melnik in 1530" first summarizes the existing literature on the topic, which occurs soon after the half of the 19th century (Chapter 1). The names of the purchaser and illuminator of the Louny Gradual are documented in the first part of the Gradual's explicit (IG 8, f. 427v). The explicit also includes the date and provenance of the Louny Gradual, which was completed in 1530 for Utraquist literary fraternity at St. Nicholas'Church in Louny (Chapter 2.4). The Louny Gradual belongs among the last written Latin Utraquist choral books. It contains one of the largest collections of Kyrie and Sequences. Paintings in both parts Gradual (IG 8a, b) are in the academic literature considered the decline in artistic standards. However, the nearly intact Louny Gradual characterizes the spectacular color components and efforts to adopt new ideas from the west, mainly represented by M. Schongauer's and Dürer's prints.

Medieval Wall Paintings (Frescoes) in the Decanal Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary in Písek

Anglická anotace Medieval Wall Paintings at Decan Church of the Nativity of Virgin Mary at Písek Four wall paintings preserved at Decan Church of the Nativity of Virgin Mary at Písek are not only important document of development of Czech painting, but also of painting in middle Europe. Paintings depict Virgin Mary with Jesus, Crucifixion, Taking of the Cross and Jesus The Suffering. The goal of this bachelor work is to implant this examined paintings to cultural and historical connections of the period of art, find similarity of individual illustrations, further summarize the literature about this problem and show the meaning with connection of the paintings in czech and european art. The Town Písek was the property of the Czech Kings, controlled by Premyslid castle. Wall Paintings at The Decan Church of the Nativity of Virgin Mary - Virgin Mary with Jesus and Crucifixion are probably connected with courtly circle. Important role during the creation of the pictures of Virgin Mary with Jesus and Crucifixion did probably the king Přemysl Otakar II., who visited Písek very often.
