Café Central Europe. Central European debate of the 80' as the symbolic center of Czech history
Dutch EU Policy
Svorcik, Christopher ; Drulák, Petr (advisor) ; Kořan, Michal (referee)
The Netherlands is a small Western European democracy with historically a strong orientation on international trade, commercial relations, and capital investments. Dutch foreign policy was in turn closely oriented on these interests. This obliged the Netherlands to engage in worldwide diplomacy and wars, particularly in the 17th and 18th centuries. Between the Napoleonic era and World War Two, however, the Netherlands became known for its isolationism and neutrality because it lacked the means (capital, military strength and geopolitical situation) to be able to embrace an assertive foreign policy. After the Second War World the Netherlands decided to replace its isolationist stance for economic cooperation with its European partners via the EEC and EU and for security cooperation with its Atlantic partners via NATO. The Netherlands clearly opted for Atlantic ties, European cooperation, international law, and international institutions as the basis of its new foreign policy. For the Netherlands, which was a founding member of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) and the European Economic Community (EEC), the main priority of European cooperation centered on market and economy. After the integration and enlargement processes of the European Union (EU) intensified in the 1990s and 2000s, the EU began...
The Role of Central Europe in U.S. Foreign Policy After the Cold War
Jireš, Jan ; Barša, Pavel (advisor) ; Kořan, Michal (referee) ; Ellinger, Jiří (referee)
The main goal of this disertation is to map American pespectives on the position of Central Europe in American foreign policy after the Cold War. Its ambition is to systematize the particular area of American foreign policy thought that deals with Central Europe and, more precisely, with U.S. relations with the region. The goal is to contribute to a better understanding of how have the individual camps and traditions represented in the American foreign policy debate approached this particular issue. To achieve these goals, this disertation employs two existing typologies of American foreign policy thought and, subsequently, attempts to create a new, original typology that would better suit the aim of mapping the whole spectrum of relevant American perspectives on Central Europe. This disertation does not describe what has really happened in Central European-American relations, but rather aims at understanding better the U.S. foreign policy thought or, better said, one specific part of it: Opinions on U.S.-Central European relations and the position of Central Erope in international politics. Analysing the American post-Cold War discourse on Central Europe is the instrument to achieve this goal. This disertation, however, does not pressupose a direct causal link between the discourse and the...

Relations between Russia and Visegrad countries: A comparative case study
Trejbal, Václav ; Voráček, Emil (advisor) ; Veselý, Zdeněk (referee) ; Maslowski, Nicolas (referee) ; Kořan, Michal (referee)
The aim of the dissertation thesis is to compare the political relations of the Russian Federation and four Visegrad countries and to identify various aspects which contribute most to the differences in the form, content and closeness of the relations. The core of the thesis is a comparative case study focused on the comparison of context of individual bilateral relations. These will be viewed as a clash of two foreign policies. Neoclassical realism will serve as the theoretical background for the analysis of Russian and Visegrad countries´ foreign policies. The methodological apparatus of international political economy will be used as well.
