Portrayal of immigrants and refugees in the news media: A comparative analysis of the 2015 refugee crisis, the Covid-19 pandemic, and the Russian aggression against Ukraine
Kovář, Jan ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Křeček, Jan (referee)
This master's thesis focuses on a comparative study of the political framing of immigrants and refugees in Czech media during three key periods: the migration crisis of 2015-2016, the Covid- 19 pandemic, and the period following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The thesis has two main objectives: to examine which frames prevailed in the portrayal of immigrants and refugees during each period and, secondly, to attempt to explain the variation in frames used by individual politicians in their media appearances related to framing of immigrants and refugees. To achieve these goals, the thesis employs quantitative content analysis and regression analysis. Content analysis of the framing of immigrants and refugees is conducted based on the data from the main evening newscasts of the most-watched Czech television channels. Key frames identified during the three periods include administrative, economic, security, cultural, and humanitarian frames. The results suggest that politicians adapt their framing of immigrants and refugees based on the socio-political context and the structure and characteristics of incoming immigrants and refugees. The analysis reveals significant changes in framing across the three observed periods. The results also indicate that the use of specific frames by politicians is...

Two jumps to Europe - Comparison of media representation of Bohemians in European Cups 1987 and 2023
Pasecký, Adam ; Křeček, Jan (advisor) ; Miessler, Jan (referee)
The thesis deals with the topic of media representation of the football club Bohemians Praha 1905 and its performance in international European cups. It will compare how the events of the 1987 cup match were covered by the contemporary media in comparison with the media of 2023 and the cup match of the previous year. The aim will be to juxtapose media from two completely different periods and to reveal the differences brought about by the time gap of 36 years. An important factor will be the comparison of periodicals that have been active from 1987 to the present, or at least follow their predecessors in terms of content. On the theoretical side, the thesis will introduce the role of the media in the representation of sport, establish a socio-political framework and show sport as a cultural phenomenon. The practical part will then include methodology, quantitative or qualitative analysis and then comparison of media content and subsequent interpretation of any differences revealed.

Mažáriová, Tereza ; Ris Čížková, Petra (advisor) ; Křeček, Jan (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with media coverage of the Dominik Feri case in connection with secondary victimization and victim blaming. This case involves Dominik Feri, a former MP of the Czech Republic, who was publicly accused of sexual violence by several independent witnesses in 2021. This thesis consists of a theoretical part, which includes a definition of related terms and an introduction to the case, including its wider social context. The practical part is a qualitative content analysis that addresses whether the media in reporting this case has somehow wronged the victims and caused secondary victimization as a result. This will be pursued using a few selected search codes in selected articles of the media originating from key moments in the case between 2021 and 2024. Space is also given to reader reactions in order to establish any possible link between their opinions and the narrative of each media outlet.1 1 Přeloženo za pomoci www.DeepL.com

Sova, Matouš ; Křeček, Jan (advisor) ; Nečas, Vlastimil (referee)
The present thesis "Media entertainment and politainment. Case study: Presidential elections in the Czech Republic" analyses political communication in the presidential election campaign in the Czech Republic. Political institutions are increasingly dependent on mass and new media. The notion of politainment is now an integral part of political news. The main aim of this paper is to introduce this concept in the context of the contemporary nature of political communication. The elements of politainment are analysed in the campaigns of the two most successful candidates applying for Head of state of the Czech Republic, Andrej Babiš and Petr Pavel. My primary focus is on the television appearances of both candidates in televised debates on Czech Television, FTV Prima and TV NOVA, which were the highlight of the entire presidential campaign. I was interested in the content of both candidates' messages and the overall character of the debates. In this thesis I am going to answer the following selected questions: What is the role of political communication in politics? How has its form changed since the 1990s? What do we mean by the term "politainment"? What are positive and negative aspects of politainment? What were the issues raised during the presidential campaigns? Can we consider the historic first direct...

Media communication of presidential candidates on Twitter
Dvořáková, Daniela ; Křeček, Jan (advisor) ; Hroch, Miloš (referee)
The aim of the thesis is to map and evaluate the political media communication of the candidates for the 2023 presidential elections. In the research I first try to outline the situation and circumstances that were related to the period before the 2023 presidential elections and at the same time I introduce the presidential candidates - Andrej Babiš, Petr Pavel, Danuša Nerudová, Mark Hilšer, Pavel Fischer, Karel Diviš and Tomáš Zima. In the empirical part of my thesis, a systematic and structured approach to data analysis was used, with the main emphasis on the method of content analysis using coding. This analytical method enables the identification of key patterns, themes, and relationships in textual or image data. Content coding was conducted as part of the thesis, which involved assigning categories or codes to individual Twitter posts of political candidates in the 2023 presidential election. The first part of the research included posts by seven candidates from November 25, 2022, to January 14, 2023, while the second part of the research included posts by only two advancing candidates from January 15, 2023, to January 28, 2023.
