Origins and genesis of Marxist iconology
Johanidesová, Tereza ; Konečný, Lubomír (advisor) ; Kroupa, Jiří (referee) ; Rakušanová, Marie (referee)
The aim of this dissertation is to describe the basic assumptions, genesis and main characteristics of Marxist iconology, which emerged as a distinctive interpretative approach in the environment of Czech art history in the early 1960s. Here I conceive of Marxist iconology as an umbrella term for the common methodological tendencies and interpretive strategies of a closely interrelated group of art historians working at the then Institute for Theory and History of Art of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. The thesis follows four main thematic lines that can be considered crucial in terms of shaping the method of Marxist iconology into the form it took in the 1960s. The first perspective pursued is represented by iconographic and iconological tendencies. The history of the notions of iconography and iconology and its main world representatives are outlined, with an emphasis on the first half of the 20th century, followed by an examination of initially iconographic and later iconological tendencies in 20th century Czech art history. Emphasis is placed not only on the ways of conceptual interpretation but also on the tradition of understanding the concepts of iconography/iconology in Czech art history. The second line that the thesis follows in terms of the formation of Marxist iconology is the very...
In the Name of Socialism, in the Shadow of the Monarchy: Post-War Monument Care in Central Europe
Bachtík, Jakub ; Johanidesová, Tereza ; Uhlíková, Tereza ; Giustino, Cathleen ; Sklenář, Michal ; Novotný, Michal ; Mahringer, Paul ; Lövai, Pál ; Spikić, Marko ; Janatková, Alena ; Meulen, Marcus ; Horáček, Martin ; Gaži, Martin ; Furkert, Alf ; Kovařík, David ; Radostová, Šárka
The collection of studies on the history of post-war monument care is based on the international conference Monuments and monument care in Czechoslovakia and other Central European countries during the second half of the 20th century, which took place in the spring of 2021. Selected contributions by authors from the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Croatia or Hungary map the institutional development of monument care in the countries of the former Habsburg Monarchy, a significant part of which was located on the eastern side of the Iron Curtain. The book thus offers not only a valuable comparison of the various systems of monument care within Central Europe, but also unusual material on the history of post-war European totalitarianism.

Salome in the art of symbolism and decadence and her representation in czech fine arts at the begining of the 20th century
Johanidesová, Tereza ; Wittlich, Petr (advisor) ; Prahl, Roman (referee)
The theme of this dissertation is a representation of biblical figure of Jewish princess Salome in fine arts. The author of this dissertation focuses mainly attention on the turn of the 19th and 20th century, when the theme of Salome became the fundamental motif of the Symbolist and Decadence art. In this time Salome started to appear very frequently in the world of literature, painting, sculpture and graphic art as well and she epitomized nearly the icon and the idol for the artists of this period. But in fact Salome as one of the figures acting in the New Testament narrative about the death of John the Baptist was a biblical subject with rich iconographic tradition developing systematically already from the Early Christian art. It is for this reason that the part of this dissertation comprises also the brief analysis of the narrative and the outline of his iconography in the sphere of fine arts. The chapters devoted to the genearal characterization of Symbolism and Decadence serve as an introduction into this complicated age, when the reconsideration of previous values in the sphere of fine arts, science, politics and society projects into the visual representations too. With regard to interconnection of literature and fine arts at the turn of the 19th century, the attention is also payed to the most...
"Library as a Mirror of the Mind" - The Conception of the Warburg Library
Johanidesová, Tereza ; Šípek, Richard (advisor) ; Sladká, Veronika (referee)
Bachelor thesis focuses on the research library, founded by a significant German art historian and historian of culture, Aby Warburg. The Library was originally located in Hamburg as Kulturwissenschaftliche Bibliothek Warburg. Before the 2nd World War, the Library was forced to change its residence into London where it became the department (The Warburg Institute) of the University of London. The thesis outlines shortly the history of Library in the context of Aby Warburg's life and his scientific work. The next chapters are devoted to the description of Library's classification scheme and the organization of books based on the open shelves system, both in the connection with Warburg's scholarly methods. Within the scope of these issues, the deeper analysis of the term "research library", which was not so far discussed adequately in Czech librarian discourse, is done. Some of the strategies and rules coined by Aby Warburg for the purposes of efficiency of open acces book collection are closely clarified - "the law of good neighbourhood", serendipity, and others.
Art historian Rudolf Chadraba and his work
Johanidesová, Tereza ; Konečný, Lubomír (advisor) ; Hlobil, Ivo (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to explore and evaluate the scientific work of art historian Rudolf Chadraba who is generally considered to be one of the founders and the most distinctive representatives of an iconological method in czech art history. The Master's thesis doesn't make efforts to survey Chadraba's scientific career from biographic point of view in a clearly and chronologically way, because the main focus of the interpretation lies on starting points of Chadraba's work, specific influences on him, particular motifs and themes, which are penetrating and reflected in his academical works of art historian and which therefore form his peculiar method. Biographical information about Rudolf Chadraba is introduced here only briefly, the text tends to point out Chadraba's transdisciplinary approach and his extensive conception of iconology. Moreover, it pays a lot of attention to influences of such personalities as Max Dvořák, Ladislav Cejp, Alois Dempf, Josef Strzygowski or Herbert Read, who represent important source of inspiration in Chadraba's scientific work. Theories and methods of these scholars in connection with Chadraba's interest in tradition and triumphalism in christian art initiated his pursuing parallels between european and oriental art, which were insufficiently employed in czech art...
