Stress and Coping Resources in Crisis Intervention Helpline Professionals: A Grounded Theory Approach

This master's thesis focuses on experiences of occupational stress in professionals employed at crisis intervention helplines. The aim of the thesis is to develop a theoretical model of coping resources used by crisis interventionists to cope with occupational stress. The theoretical part of the thesis describes key definitions and theories of occupational stress, drawing on occupational health psychology literature. Specific stressors that endanger workers' occupational health in helping professions, particularly in crisis interventions, are identified. Next, the thesis defines the concept of coping and describes specific personal, social, and other resources that can be used to cope with work-related stress. The theoretical part is concluded with an overview of recent empirical studies focusing on coping resources in counseling and crisis intervention. The empirical part of the thesis uses qualitative design, and specifically a grounded theory approach, to develop a theoretical model of coping resources used by crisis interventionists to cope with occupational stress. The Specifics of Psychological Self-Sufficiency from the Perspective of Czech and American College/University Students.

This thesis investigates psychological self-sufficiency and its aspects from the perspective of US and Czech college/university students. The aim of the research was to find the elements that accompany an individual during the complex process that leads to psychological self- sufficiency since there has been given little attention to this phenomenon from researchers. Specifically, it investigates the general idea the students have of psychological self-sufficiency and where did it originate from. Moreover, it examines what qualities are important to be psychologically self-sufficient, what strategies do the students implement and what do they want to achieve with being psychologically self-sufficient. Twelve interviews were conducted with 6 US and 6 Czech students. The interviews have been analyzed with the goal to formulate a grounded theory. The students' idea of psychological self- sufficiency and its importance is impacted by family, friends and education and is enforced by having the right conditions and by applying strategies which should help reach a positive and a confident mindset that reinforces psychological self-sufficiency.
