This thesis investigates psychological self-sufficiency and its aspects from the perspective of US and Czech college/university students. The aim of the research was to find the elements that accompany an individual during the complex process that leads to psychological self- sufficiency since there has been given little attention to this phenomenon from researchers. Specifically, it investigates the general idea the students have of psychological self-sufficiency and where did it originate from. Moreover, it examines what qualities are important to be psychologically self-sufficient, what strategies do the students implement and what do they want to achieve with being psychologically self-sufficient. Twelve interviews were conducted with 6 US and 6 Czech students. The interviews have been analyzed with the goal to formulate a grounded theory. The students' idea of psychological self- sufficiency and its importance is impacted by family, friends and education and is enforced by having the right conditions and by applying strategies which should help reach a positive and a confident mindset that reinforces psychological self-sufficiency. Throughout the whole process the individual faces many intervening conditions which may act as an hinderance or a catalyst. Key words: self-sufficiency,... Tato práce zkoumá psychologickou soběstačnost a její aspekty z pohledu amerických a českých univerzitních studentů. Cílem výzkumu bylo najít základní složky, které provázejí jedince během komplexního procesu vedoucí ke psychologické soběstačnosti, jelikož se tomuto fenoménu zatím mnoho výzkumníků nevěnovalo. Konkrétně tato práce zkoumá obecnou představu studentů o psychologické soběstačnosti a odkud pochází. Dále zjišťuje, jaké vlastnosti jsou podle studentů pro psychologickou soběstačnost důležité mít, jaké strategie implementují a čeho chtějí psychologickou soběstačností dosáhnout. Bylo provedeno 12 rozhovorů s 6 americkými a 6 českými studenty. Následně se rozhovory analyzovaly s cílem formulovat zakotvenou teorii. Představa studentů o psychologické soběstačnosti pochází z rodiny, od přátel a vzdělání a je posilována správnými podmínkami a aplikací strategií, které mají napomoci dosáhnout pozitivního a sebevědomého myšlení, které posiluje psychologickou soběstačnost. Během celého procesu se jedinec potýká s mnoha intervenujícími podmínkami, které se mohou chovat jako překážky nebo katalyzátory.
