Between Human and Animal. Construction of Dog's Subjectivity
Labusová, Barbora ; Grygar, Jakub (advisor) ; Hirschová, Marta (referee)
The bachelor thesis "Between human and animal: Construction of dog's subjectivity"deals with the problem of position of pets, dogs particularly, to the categorisation of human and animal. Its aim is to describe what the manners of stating the dog's subjectivity are, by studying the keeper's behaviour toward their dogs, and to prove that the dogs are beside of the notion of the strict division of culture and society on one side and nature on the other. Theoretically the author relies on the thoughts of researchers, who deal with societies where people don't divide culture and nature and non-humans are endowed with subjectivity, methodologically the thesis is anchored in ethnographic approach. As for the research, the author conducted six interviews with dog -keepers, which were complemented by observation of people and their dogs while dog-walking. The empirical part is focused on the data analysis and the author describes the dog-keepers' behaviour and looking for such behaviour through which people establish dogs' subjectivity. The thesis shows, that people think of their dogs as family members, who are often treated as children and impute them with human personality and abilities. However, people realise, that their pet dog is still the beast. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Erasmus Students, Culture Shock and the Process of Adaptation
Hofmannová, Zdena ; Cirklová, Jitka (advisor) ; Hirschová, Marta (referee)
The thesis is focused on culture shock and adaptation of Erasmus students based on a research conducted with Erasmus students at Irish university. The method of the research was biographical interview with nine students participating in Erasmus programme. The research indicated absence of culture shock and adaptation was usually tied to personal changes and challenges that the sojourn brought about. The thesis presents main topics through which the respondents constructed the notion of adaptation - language, academic, practical, social adaptation and adaptation on the absence of relatives, friends and partners. The tendency of each of those dimensions of adaptation is growing until the exams start which disrupts this process. In the next section, the thesis compares the course of the sojourn to rite of passage, dividing it into three main phases - before departure (pre-liminal), during the sojourn (liminal) and after return (post-liminal). Rite of passage is also one of the ways how it is possible to explain the definition of the meaning of the sojourn for the students themselves. Other ways are adventure and development of self and better understanding of self (the concept of existential authenticity is used to explain this fact). The thesis marginally touches the subject of the meaning of culture...

Daneš, David ; Šanderová, Jadwiga (advisor) ; Hirschová, Marta (referee)
David Daneš Social Status Inconsistency in the Czech Republic: What does the first decade of 21st century suggest? Abstract This thesis deals with the multidimensional concept of social status and mainly with the phe- nomenon of unbalanced position at several stratification scales - social status inconsistency. The work provides a comprehensive overview of the use of this concept in foreign and subse- quently in the Czech sociology with background of interpretation of classical theoretical con- cepts and approaches to social stratification as such. Then the author's own analysis of data from the ISSP surveys is presented. Author refines existing research's results and also de- scribes the progress of the core metrics of status inconsistency in more than a decade, which for this purpose so far not been analyzed. Analysis based on the operationalisation established in the Czech sociology showed that rising trend of status consistency described by Czech au- thors in the nineties does not continue. Even the degrees of status consistency doesn't keep that level. There are two significant declines during the late nineties and around 2009, which are also decline in performance of the national economy (GDP) - the relationship of the two variables being tested. The author also deals with broader conception of status...
