Lenka Mundevová Translation of Colloquial Language Devices in Fiction: A Century of Maupassant's Ivrogne in Czech Translation Abstract The dissertation compares the stylization of the dialogues in the French original of Maupassant's short story Ivrogne (The Drunkard), written in 1884, with five Czech translations published between 1902 and 1997. The comparative analysis is focused on the devices of colloquial language, including dialect, which appear frequently in the dialogues of the story and prove to be extraordinarily useful when interpreting Maupassant's text. The analysis of the excerpted material is preceded by the description of the basic characteristics of colloquial French and Czech, followed by the description of their stratifications. The mutual relation of the colloquial language varieties is an important prerequisite for the evaluation of the translations of colloquial language devices and their appropriateness in the individual Czech versions of Ivrogne. The paper also deals with the development of Czech aesthetic translation standards and their relation to the standard of local fiction, outlining the important tendencies of Czech fiction translation applied when colloquial devices were conveyed from French to Czech during the specified timeframe. Translation of False Friends from French to Czech - A Corpus Analysis

This master's thesis explores the influence of the faux amis phenomenon on the outcomes of translations from French to Czech. The emphasis is on analyzing these false friends through the examination of semantic relations, considering the distinctions and resemblances in the meanings of potential translation equivalents. The primary objective of the thesis is to ascertain whether the presence of these interlingual word pairs adversely affects the tone of the translation. Audiovisual Translation: the Role of the Translator in the Creation of Czech Dubbing

The aim of the master thesis is to explore in detail a specific field of translation: translation for dubbing. The thesis focuses on the role and position of the dubbing translator on the contemporary Czech audiovisual market and it also examines the economic background of the profession. The empirical part is based on a quantitative questionnaire survey and qualitative interviews with translators. To analyse the results of the research, the descriptive analysis was used. Thanks to the interviews, the thesis also compares the theoretical requirements of translation for dubbing with the current practice of translation for dubbing in the Czech Republic. This bachelor's thesis is divided into two parts. The first section is practical, consisting of a translation of selected seventeen chapters from the book Guide mondain des villages de France written by the French author Matthias Debureaux. The work describes French villages whose history is linked to famous personalities in the world. The second part of the thesis consists of a translation commentary, which includes a translation analysis based on the work of the translatologist Christiane Nord, a description of the translation method, particular translation problems and their solutions. This publication was written in 2019 by Marie Marquis et al. at the University of Montreal. The thesis also includes a commentary on the overall translation process and everything that a translator must pay attention to during their work. Therefore, in addition to the translation itself, the thesis also includes the analysis of the source text, the translation method and fictional assignment, selected translation problems and their solution through translation techniques and shifts.

Terminology management in the institutional settings and the creation of terms for the IATE database

This thesis deals with the management of terminology in a multilingual institutional environment, with an emphasis on the organisation of terminology work in the institutions of the European Union, and includes a contribution to the project of Terminology Coordination Unit of the European Parliament Terminology without Borders. The theoretical part first describes the role of terminology in a multilingual institutional environment, defines the basic concepts of terminology work, and introduces the main international terminology standards. It then discusses the topic of terminology management in the institutions of the EU, in UN, and NATO, and inter-institutional cooperation in this area. Based on the gathered information, a professional profile of terminology staff in the institutional environment is drawn up. The European Union's terminology database IATE is also thoroughly discussed. The empirical part of the thesis focuses on the workflow for the preparation of terminological entries in the field of complementary and alternative medicine for the Terminology without Borders project, which serves as an illustration of the process of preparing terms for the IATE database.
