Trees: attitudes and visual preferences
Stachová, Jana ; Čermák, Daniel
The study presented in this paper uses a representative sample of the Czech population to analyse the relationships between attitudes to trees and preferences for landscapes with trees. We ask whether a positive assessment of the environmental functions of trees in general and old and dead trees in particular, leads to preferences for wilderness-like forms of the tree landscape. The results show that people who appreciate the environmental benefits of trees are more likely to prefer transparent and organised landscapes with trees, whereas the more specific environmental attitude appreciating old or dead trees is reflected in higher preferences for wilderness-like.
Effect of climate change on hydrological extremes in montane catchments
Čermák, Daniel ; Langhammer, Jakub (advisor) ; Jeníček, Michal (referee)
This master thesis deals with the issue of low-flows in mountain catchments in the context of expected climate change. The Zdobnice, Vydra and Mumlava river basins are selected for analysis. In the first part of thesis, the meteorological and hydrological historical data are evaluated. This data are obtained from CHMI (Czech Hydrometeorological Institute). The work also focuses on estimating the possible change in flow rates in the distant future (2100). For these purposes, the conceptual model HBV is used. This model is often used for these types of analyzes due to its robustness. To evaluate the change, twelve alternative scenarios were created. These scenarious were based on the results of global and regional climate models related to each selected river basins. The model was calibrated using the automatic GAP optimization function. Based on the best results, the calibration period is set for the years 1980 - 1998. Climate models suggest increase of temperature in far future by 1.5 ř C - 4.5 ř C. At the same time, according to climate models, we can approximate a total precipitation change by 10 %. Based on climate changes, a shift in the runoff seasonality in the all river basins is evident. Seasonality change is most visible in the Zdobnice river basin. In terms of hydrological drought, an...

Urbanová, Eliška ; Moree, Dana (advisor) ; Straková, Jana (referee) ; Čermák, Daniel (referee)
Eliška Urbanová, abstract of thesis: Pupil participation as a way of education for democratic citizenship. Obstacles of its development and their successful overcoming. Abstract The curricular documents of many democratic states, including the Czech Republic, require schools to develop pupils' competences for democratic culture. The results of the international comparative research show that Czech pupils are above the average at the level of knowledge, but below the average in the area of skills and attitudes. Because skill and attitude component can be strengthened by pupil participation, its implementation in Czech schools probably fails to be effective. The purpose of this thesis is to detect possible obstacles in the implementation of pupil participation at the level of school culture and at the level of structure of schools and education system, and examine what can help overcome these obstacles. Methods: The research was carried out in the form of a multiple holistic case study of three schools that have extensive experience with pupil participation. In-depth interviews with thirty teachers and the study of school documents took place. Results: Teachers play a key role in how well the participation will be realized, because without their support most students will not be able to participate...

Controversy about Šumava: Strengths and weaknesses of the ecological principle of consensus
Chomátová, Eliška ; Stöckelová, Tereza (advisor) ; Čermák, Daniel (referee)
The thesis is based on a qualitative research realized in summer 2008 in several municipalities in Šumava. Focus groups organized within this research aimed at the relationship of different stakeholders to the Šumava National Park and more generally to nature and environmentalist thoughts and actors. The research design and the data gathered are presented in the introduction. Then the theory of general principles of consensus is described, which serves as the main theoretical framework for the study of focus groups participants' arguments. Using particular arguments, I show that against the protection of nature as it is realized by Šumava National Park Authority, critical citizens build their arguments on values that are considered legitimate and important in Czech society. The next part of the thesis studies the ecological principle of consensus as a new general principle of consensus: I discuss the conditions for existence of such a principle, its form in the controversy about the management of Šumava and the implications its form can have, supporting broader acceptance of the principle or, on the contrary, its rejection. An important point there is the relationship between expertise and participation, which are, together with the concept of nature, main elements of the ecological principle of...
