Exploring case forms of Czech nouns and their ranking in semantic (collocational) classes

This dissertation aims to identify and analyse the frequency distribution of mor- phological forms of nouns in contemporary Czech. The work is based on an error analysis of texts of non-native speakers revealing and describing frequent types of errors in noun inflection. Against the background of recent research in the field of second language acquisition on the one hand and the principles of communicative approaches to language teaching on the other hand nine textbooks of Czech as a foreign language are analysed for approaches to the introduction and presentation of grammatical cases, their functions and typical constructions. It is concluded that it is necessary to exemplify case functions by prototypical constructions and sufficient sample nouns for which these functions are typical. With regard to the often observed emphasis on the noun as a part of the inflectional paradigm and thus on the nominative singular as its basic form, it is eligible for textbooks and language classes to shift the focus from the dominant paradigmatic to the syntag- matic aspect of nouns and their word forms. Written communication and teaching of the czech language for foreigners

In her thesis the author looks at written communication in teaching Czech for foreigners. The theoretical part gives an account of theoretical foundations, such as synchronic and diachronic approaches to the language situation (worldwide, in Europe and especially in the Czech Republic) and language education, including introduction to communicative methods. Furthermore, the author describes individual component parts of the language education (means of expression and communication skills), with a focus on written communication. The analytical part analyses language-teaching methods of written communication in textbooks of Czech for foreigners. The last language-teaching methodological part is more practical, which the author offers specific recommendations for teaching written communication in Czech language for foreigners. This thesis focuses on the opportunities for developing speaking skills in teaching Czech for foreigners at the B1 level. In its theory section, historical and contemporary approaches in language teaching are introduced with special attention given to speaking skills and communicative language teaching. Subsequently the thesis presents an overview of the present state of research in the field of speaking as a process and a complex skill and a classification of speaking activities. The requirements placed on the oral communication of the students at B1 level by the Common European Framework are also laid out. In the analysis, selected textbooks of Czech for foreigners are examined to determine what opportunities the textbooks offer for the development of speaking skills. At the conclusion of the analysis the respective textbooks are compared and improvements to existing speaking activities are proposed to meet the findings of the modern language teaching methodology.
Verbal Irony in the Czech Discourse and its Perception

Verbal Irony in the Czech Discourse and its Perception Mgr. Dominika Rýparová Abstract This thesis sets the verbal irony into a broader context of human communication and supports the tendency to understand the irony as a communication strategy - not only as a speech figure or a tool to make our way of speaking more attractive. The aim of this work is to remind that irony is an integral part of our everyday communication, and a prerequisite for its use and understanding is built on the particular language experience. The experiment was examining the function of the four forms of irony, which differed in the degree of engaged humour or, conversely, expressed criticism. During the research one was able to get answers from a total of 3,167 respondents. Their analysis revealed that the major motivation for use of the selected types of irony is the humour, but the more humorous the statement is, the more the speaker takes a risk of not being completely understood, because he/she plays with reality too much. Further the results showed that the perception of irony-related emotions is influenced by our age. Younger people are more sensitive to the humorous points of irony, while the older are more tolerant of its critical part. Supporting speaking competence of children in primary school

This diploma thesis deals with support of speaking competence of children in primary school. It focuses especially on the 5th and 6th grade students and on an expository writing whereas it explicates the basic developmental characteristics of this age group. In its crucial part, diploma comes with a unique set of activities, which could accompany the exercises in the Czech language textbooks used nowadays. Finally, in the closing chapter, the testing of selected activities with a group of 5th grade students is described including an evaluation and a feedback of students. Czech of Slovak Speakers

The bachelor`s thesis Czech of Slovak Speakers analyzes the spoken language speeches by two Slovak speakers in the Czech language on the basis of language transfer, semicommunication and linguistic typology of errors described in the first part. The second part is in relation to the theoretical definition of the problem devoted to the research. It describes and according to the language levels divides errors as actually found in the speeches and imagined, which are described by speakers themselves. The conclusion find out the ratio between the errors caused by interference and by other influences. We explain possible causes of this situation and we are suggesting a solution there.

THE AUDIO COMPONENT IN TEACHING CZECH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

(in English): This thesis deals with the issues of teaching listening in Czech as a foreign language. It is based on studying theoretic sources, structured observing and the comparison of didactic materials, on questionnaires and informal interviews. In its theoretical part, it brings a brief overview of present knowledge in this field, using predominantly foreign sources that deal with teaching English as a foreign language. The second part enables the comparison of various didactic materials from the points of view acquired in the previous chapter, and it also provides an overview of the typology of listening tasks, including their evaluation. The last chapter designs some new sample materials based on what has been found out about their imperfections in this field so far, and it also mentions some suitable resources for designing the new listening tasks. The merit of this thesis on the theoretical level consists of making the main results of contemporary Anglo-American science accessible for the Czech auditory, on the practical level it lies in presenting an overall list of listening tasks and showing (in the Czech materials) some so far unknown possibilities of teaching the listening comprehension, these alternatives being accompanied with practical examples.
Effects of the Teaching Czech as a Second Language

Name of the thesis is "Effects of the Teaching Czech as a Second Language" and in its first part presents theoretical introduction to the field of study, empirical researches of student's productive skills (Czech as a foreign language) follow (speaking, writing). First part is focused on theoretical knowledges of second language acquisition, options and approaches to exploration of language's errors and approach and viewing of errors and mistakes in general, especially in foreign researches and literature. Bigger attention is paid to selected analyzes, those are basic instruments for making of practical part of the thesis. It is especially error analysis (EA) and analysis of fluency and accuracy. Because the thesis's topic is concerned to effects of teaching and affecting factors, there are defined terms of pedagogy and psychology in theoretical part. In practical part there is presented empirical execution of mentioned analyzes, its comparison, evaluation and making conclusions in relation to appointed variables, or rather determinants, which enter the education process. Life and Institutions in Czech Textbooks for Foreigners in Terms of Development of Intercultural Competence

Life and Institutions are some of the key factors of any culture. When it comes to successful communication with other cultures, Intercultural competence is crucial. The study of Life and Institutions should therefore by a mandatory part of teaching Czech as a foreign language. Based on extensive analysis, the thesis examines how Czech Life and Institutions are portrayed in select textbooks for foreigners reaching level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The outcome of the thesis is not only a detailed charting of Life and Institutions found in textbooks of Czech language for foreigners, but also a set of major findings based on the initially proposed questions. The analysis of textbooks is based on theoretical findings, which are introduced in the first part of the thesis and which form the necessary framework for the research part of the thesis.
