When Men Dance. Construction of Masculinity in Male Pole Dancers

This diploma thesis examines current phenomenon of pole dance/sport. This activity which was originally performed in strip clubs was relatively recently redefined as a fitness activity offered at pole dancing studios initially for women, but now also for men. Despite the efforts to redefined pole dance as a fitness activity in the eyes of the public pole dance is still associated with its erotic roots and (therefore) with women. According to previous research pole dance is seen as a feminine and feminized activity. Men's participation in these activities is, according to studies, associated with the belief that those men are effeminate or homosexual and therefore construct their gender identity in ways which are inconsistent with the social ideas of masculinity. In this thesis I explore the ways in which male pole dancers construct their masculinity within this unique environment. I also explore what participation in the world of pole dance mean to men who take pole dancing classes and/or who teach them as well as the stereotypes placed upon men to act in a certain way to be considered masculine. The Politicization of Sexuality in South Africa

1 Abstract This diploma thesis deals with the topic of politicization of sexuality in South Africa in relation to sexual violence against children. Using qualitative content analysis the paper examines, how the "baby rape" phenomenon is described in South African media production and how it relates to the new democracy in the post-apartheid South Africa. Likewise, attention is paid to the issue of virginity testing, which is interpreted as a reaction to the "moral crisis" of the newly formed democratic nation. The examined issue is viewed in the wider context of social relations, therefore using an intersectional approach. The analytical aspect of the analysis includes the categories of race, gender, and sexuality. The intersectional concept analyzes the role of media representation in designing individual social categories and thus strengthening certain forms of oppression. The theoretical background of the work is based on black feminism and the Stanley Cohen's theory of moral panic. With analysing media representation it is examined the way the gender, sexuality, and race are studied and represented in order to answer the thesis question of how Western discourse intersects through these analytical categories. Body under Supervision. Sexuality and Corporeality in Lovely green eyes novel.

The Diploma Thesis, Body under supervision. Corporeality and Sexuality in the novel Lovely green eyes, focuses on gender analysis of the literary work, which itself deals with gender relations and emphasizes a women's experience. The Lustig's novels setting is full of "feminine" themes and seems to be feminist at first glance. With a closer look you can find an intruder in the form of a "masculine" narrator, depicting the woman mainly as a body and a "thing to look at." The key concept of the thesis is a feminist literary criticism, using the resisting reader method by Judith Fetterley, that draws attention to the existence of a universal male perspective. As every text analysis is discours analysis as well, the other method I will apply will be the discours analysis method. For the analysis of narrator's point of view, I will apply Laura Mulvey's theory of voyeurism, to find out if the text does portray the female experience as erotic. Because of the strong textual interpellation, requiring readers to identify with the narrator's view, it is important to pay attention to the narrator's point of view and find the possibilities of refusing the interpellation of the text. The Concept of Violence in Kobold, a Novel by Radka Denemarková

The master's thesis The Concept of Violence in Kobold, a Novel by Radka Denemarková inquires into a representation of violence in the selected literary text, written by a Czech author, from the perspective of gender analysis. Integral part of the master's thesis is the writing style "feminine writing", in which the double-novel Kobold is written. The analysis is carried out in the context of feminist literary theories. The work is therefore based on the concept of resistant reading, which is inseparably associated with the name of Judith Fetterley, and which allows us to examine the text without being influenced by the author's concept. Other inseparable pillars of this master's thesis are the works of literary theorists Pam Morris, Elain Showalter, Jan Matonoha and Hélène Cixous. The Absence of a Woman in Language

The central topic of the thesis is a (seemingly) paradoxical preposition of current feminist thinking that a woman in language and in our culture is absent. It is an all theoretical work that focuses on interpretation of key concepts of gender analysis related to the major concept of absence of a woman in language. It is trying to explain these concepts as deeply as possible and point at their interconnections and eventually their different conceptions, whereas the analysis proceeds primarily on the grounds of literary criticism. The work is structured into two thematically interconnected units. The first focuses on analysing key terms of contemporary poststructuralist philosophy and critical theory, particularly language, text, writing, discourse, power, gender identity and falogocentrism, with the aim to map the theoretical foundations of the concept of absence of a woman in language. Content Intersectional Analysis of the Fairy Tale King and King

In the thesis I deal with the content intersectional analysis of the fairy tale book for preschoolers "Princ a princ" (King and King) by Linda de Haan and Stern Nijland. The book is unique for its tale which goes beyond heteronormative frame of canon of children's literature. The work is based on critical reading and interpretation of the book's text and illustration. The goal of this work is to examine what message is send to children through constructions and (re)presentations of the characters and tale and in what ways the book confirms and disconfirms stereotypes. The work is set into the frame of theories of socialization and acquiring an idenity. It deals with the role of children's literature and fairy tales in the proces of socialization and discusses questions of streotypes and its social consequences. The empirical part is based on qualitative content intersectional analysis in which I focus on construction and representation of particular intersectional characteristics. Visual symbolical violence against women and animals as means of representation and consolidation of the patriarchal power

The dissertation connects areas of critical-animal studies and feminist studies over the question of picturing bodies of animals and women including visual violence. In particular it addresses the use of mentioned picturing methods by an animal rights movement. I understand women and animals to be marginalised groups in patriarchal society on which is represented the power of hegemonic masculinity by denigrating, violent and sexual representation, even though each group has its specifics. The method of representation serves as means of confirmation and embedding of hegemonic masculinity, anthropocentric system built on binary oppositions man/woman, human/animal, and with them related discourse of difference. The aim of the dissertation is to point out common characteristics of denigrating representation including violence (with sexual meaning) on animals and women who are reduced to objects, on which visualisation of violence is socially accepted. The initial point comes from feminist theories of Carol J. Adams and her concept of absent referent. Further it works with concept of intersectionality and fluid identity according to Rosi Braidotti, which enables consideration of assigning a claim of personal identity also to animals.
