Contemporary war photography and ethics

The bachelor thesis Contemporary war photography and ethics focuses on ethical aspects of the profession of being war photojournalist and war photography itself. The aim of the thesis is to describe specific ethical dilemmas related to war photography from classic issues as imaging acts of violence and their victims to different ways of influence the profession in order to control the picture of war in minds of the public. The thesis defines war photography and its function as well as the profession of war photojournalists itself. It describes specific ethical issues and enumerates the most respected codes of ethics. The last part of the thesis focuses on the relation between media and civil and military authorities and outlines the main milestones in development of media strategy of United States of America and other western countries since the Vietnam war.
A photo-essay and a reportage photography on the Internet versions of the world-known newspapers or news magazines

The end of the 21st century was marked by major technological changes. These changes, especially the invention of digital photography and the Internet, also affected the area of photography. During this period, while print media are in a crisis, the web is rapidly becoming the new source of media content. The area of photojournalism is one of the first to respond to these changes by creating multimedia sections in online versions of newpaper and news magazines. The thesis "A photo-essay and a reportage photography on the Internet versions of the world-known newspapers and news magazines" is about the transfer of photography from the pages of newspapers to web sites. The whole thesis is then divided into a theoretical and a practical part. The first chapter is focused on the very changes brought by this transition - since the creation of the citizen journalism to the issue of the copyright. Then, there are defined the terms " a photo-essay" and " a reportage photography" that are important for the second half ot the text. The analytical part, which is based on the content analysis, examines four photo-essays selected from the American news magazine Time. Photography as a medium of instant communication

This thesis follows changes in basic functions of photography in the history, as well as in actual days. Theoretical part covers development of photography in way of forming its communication function and focuses on changes causing partial turnover in main usage of photography. The work as well refers about problematic of influencing access and distribution of pictures with Web 2.0 conception and social networks boom. It analyzes current development of brand new photography functions, such as self-presentation and communication. The second part of the thesis covers current usage and consuming photography in the field of amateur photographs. As part of the research a survey was published questioning this theme together with photography on the social networks, such as Facebook and Flickr. Its results analysis takes place in the second part as well. Its purpose is revealing the concrete changes currently influencing the consumption of photography.
Citizen photojournalism - amateurs as photoreporters

The bachelor thesis Citizen Photojournalism - Amateurs as Photoreporters deals with increasing citizen participation in creating visual media content which has seen big growth over the last decade thanks to development of communications and information technology. The thesis is divided into three separate parts. The first part focuses on theoretical definition of citizen journalism and photojournalism phenomena. It shows how big impact the new technologies have on journalism amateurisation and also remarks on relationship between amateurs interfering with media and professionals. Second part of the bachelor thesis describes social networks and internet services that contributed to expansion of visual journalism by enabling photo sharing and publishing. Some examples of these include Flickr, Twitter or photography agency Demotix. Third part looks into concrete examples of amateur photos making their way into media as a full-fledged news material - for example London 2005 terrorist attacks or Arab Spring in 2011. All three parts emphasise print and electronic media.
Confrontation of work of photoeditors in selected Czech and American Newspapers

Graduation thesis entitled "Confrontation of work of photo editors in selected Czech and American periodicals" discusses the important profession of photo editors in the Czech Republic and the United States and attempts to compare it in these two different countries. In the first part I would like to briefly outline the history of photojournalism in the Czech Republic and the United States and describe the aspects which influenced it during two centuries. In the next chapter I focus on notions, since not everyone is familiar with the position and powers of newspaper photo editors, and the types of photographs the journalism operates with. Here I explain the emergence of the profession which is much younger than actual photojournalism. In the research section I want to - through the use of interviews with several professional photographers and photo editors - explain the various procedures and newsroom routines. I focus mainly on the habits and processes, that go before the capturing the photograph, and subsequent decision-making process in selecting images for the newspapers. Tag phenomenon on Flickr.com and its impact on interpretion extension of photography

I Abstract The first chapter of the thesis is devoted to the Flickr.com website and its evolution from its foundation until the present and to the posibility of its usage as a news source. The second chapter further explores the concept of folksonomy itself, it presents its definition, the basic approaches to its typology and singly it disserts on tag, on its forms and functions on the Flickr.com website. In the third chapter we will elaborate on the status of photography in its digital form, on its unstability and predisposition to be subject to language. The forth chapter puts forward the characteristics of text in the sphere of Internet, that of its nonlinearity, and it goes on about titles, captions and text as such in relation to photography. The fifth chapter then details the ability of tags to influence the perception of photography in the cyberspace and it addresses another phenomenon, that of the notes. The sixth and the last chapter presents the results of the "Flickrdream" research, whose objective was to find out to what degree are the tags in relation with photos on Flickr capable to comply with representation of such a complex phenomenon as a dream.
The Photoblog as a new presentation platform

This bachelor thesis is concerned with the specific effects which have been brought by digitalization. The topic of this work is photoblogs representing the new viewing platform. This work follows both the history of digital photography and changing of photojournalistic practices. In the first part there is an exploration of advantages and disadvantages of digital photography especially reflecting the progress from analogue photography toward the digital one. The emphasis is placed on photographic fakes and questioning photography as the true medium. This bachelor thesis also contains the interview with Ami Vitale talking about the multimedia as photographic tool. The second interview with Jan Ždimera explains the process of photoediting at ČTK, which shows the differences between traditional news agency and internet blog of street journalism represented by Demotix. The final part is dedicated to comparing ZoneZero and Magnum blog. This practical part is focused on each difference between ZoneZero and Magnum blog. This paper aims to highlight the developments and changes which photography went through with a special focus on the photoblog. The photography in the Respekt Magazine

Bachelor thesis "The Photography in the Respekt magazine" deals with using photographies in this medium. It emphasizes the period of the first half of the year 2006, when the magazine serialized as a broadsheet, and the period of the first half of the year 2008, when it changed its format to the magazines' one. The purpose of this thesis is to subscribe, how the redaction deals with the pictorial part of the magazine's content - it observes what is behind the creation and what happens with pictures before they are published. It subscribes the role of the photographer and the picture editor as well. The next issue, which is pointed out, is the analysis of the photographic content in both periods under consideration. It shows changes which were connected with the formats' change, with new possibilities for photography in the magazine. This analytical part of my thesis is led by the chapters which present the history and the contemporary version of the Respekt magazine. The next chapter deals with photojournalism and its classification.
