The Politicization of Sexuality in South Africa
Ptáčníková, Iveta ; Kolářová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Jiroutová Kynčlová, Tereza (referee)
1 Abstract This diploma thesis deals with the topic of politicization of sexuality in South Africa in relation to sexual violence against children. Using qualitative content analysis the paper examines, how the "baby rape" phenomenon is described in South African media production and how it relates to the new democracy in the post-apartheid South Africa. Likewise, attention is paid to the issue of virginity testing, which is interpreted as a reaction to the "moral crisis" of the newly formed democratic nation. The examined issue is viewed in the wider context of social relations, therefore using an intersectional approach. The analytical aspect of the analysis includes the categories of race, gender, and sexuality. The intersectional concept analyzes the role of media representation in designing individual social categories and thus strengthening certain forms of oppression. The theoretical background of the work is based on black feminism and the Stanley Cohen's theory of moral panic. With analysing media representation it is examined the way the gender, sexuality, and race are studied and represented in order to answer the thesis question of how Western discourse intersects through these analytical categories. Keywords: media representation, qualitative content analysis, intersectionality, politization of...

Trasffered stigma of otherness in ethnically mixed partnerships in the Czech Republic
Weinbergerová, Lenka ; Sokolová, Věra (advisor) ; Jiroutová Kynčlová, Tereza (referee)
My diploma thesis on the basis of intersectionality analyzes the social construction of "otherness" in etnically mixed partnerships and how does it manifests and influences the self- conception of Czech women that are in the mixed relationships. Further, it analyzes how the partners "otherness" affects the position of the women in the society. In my thesis I work with the concept of transmitted stigma, because the etnical otherness is not constructed on the horizontal differences, but contains also classifing and assesing aspects, which may situate the mixed patnerships to the positions of dis/advantage. For my qualitative research I have chosen semi-structured interviews with women, that were born and live in the Czech Republic and are or was in etnically mixed relationship. Key words: mixed partnership, stigma, otherness, etnicity, race, intersectionality
The roles of women and men in selected old norse sagas
Fiedlerová, Andrea ; Jiroutová Kynčlová, Tereza (advisor) ; Knotková - Čapková, Blanka (referee)
The roles of women and men in selected Old Norse sagas diploma thesis focuses on literary analysis of two Old Norse sagas - the Volsunga Saga and the Laxdœla saga - from the perspective of gender theory. Each of the sagas belongs to a different genre, The Volsunga is a so-called fornaldarsögur, while The Laxdœla saga would be considered a Íslendingasögur. The theoretical part of the thesis draws from the methods of feminist literary critique of the 1970s and 1980s, namely theory of resistant reading which helps readers avoid adopting the author's own perception of their work, and feminist archetypal analysis. The second part of the thesis - the analysis itself - is divided into three topics: agency, vengefulness, and genealogy; they are common for both sagas and allow for deeper exploration of the texts. It is on the basis on these topics that the thesis answers originally posited hypotheses regarding behaviours and behavioural patterns, activities, and meanings associated with female and male characters. Key words: Archetypal analysis, resistant reading, Old Norse, saga
Constructions of Gender in Original Chinese Boys' Love Novels
Zheng, Yuxin ; Dvořáčková, Jana (advisor) ; Jiroutová Kynčlová, Tereza (referee)
Original Chinese boys' love (BL) novels are literary works about male-male homosexual love. Their main communication channel is the Internet, and the dominant audience is young heterosexual women from all walks of life. Previous studies on BL novels mainly concentrated on the psychology of BL fans, and in recent years, more and more studies have begun to focus on the phenomenon of BL novels being adapted into commercial TV series. In addition, some researchers considered BL culture as a kind of misogynistic culture. This study will analyze how BL novels construct gender from the aspects of constructions of body, sexuality, and gender relations. Furthermore, by analyzing women's construction of gender, there will be an opportunity to reinterpret the BL audience's attitude towards gender equality, which can explore whether BL is misogynistic or not. This study uses feminist qualitative content analysis to focus on women's experiences and voices in BL culture. The source materials will be mainly existing online BL novels. The research results show that the audiences are used to putting themselves in the aesthetic subject position and treat the body in BL novels as an aesthetic object to relieve the anxiety brought by the patriarchal culture and release sexual pressure. At the same time, their...

Poe and his relationships with women. In the analytical part, I will take a look at selected poems, where I will subject the poems to a comparative analysis, while the key topic for comparison will be the search for the concept of death of beautiful women. Using gender, I will try to find new meanings and interpretations of selected poems.
Capturing femininity in the selection of Atwood's novels
Maříková, Šárka ; Knotková - Čapková, Blanka (advisor) ; Jiroutová Kynčlová, Tereza (referee)
In my diploma thesis I deal with gender and archetypal analysis of the novella Penelopiad by Canadian author Margaret Atwood. Firstly, I will introduce the chosen methodology and outline the theoretical anchoring. In the theoretical part, I am going to focus on women's writing and reading, as well as resistant reading and feminist critique of archetypes. In the analytical part I deal with application of these theories on individual characters of the Penelopiad. I follow individual female characters and I pay attention to male characters only marginally and especially in relation to women. I focus on the relationships and ties that Atwood works with and on the men's influence on women and women among themselves. I watch the stratification of power and how it is affected, for example, by the beauty myth or the struggle for dominant masculinity. Keywords: The Penelopiad, archetypes, archetypal analysis, power, resistant reader, trickster, victimization
Library as Gendered Space
Vinická, Karolína ; Sokolová, Věra (advisor) ; Jiroutová Kynčlová, Tereza (referee)
In my dissertation I will discuss the gender analyses of layout in the institution, the Prague Central Library. The Central Library is by definition a public space which should be accessible to all who are interested in literature and reading. I will be concerned with how the Central Library works with the concept of public space (explicitly and implicitly), how indoor spaces are constructed and allocated in selected library branches, with how this organization reflects or does not reflect normative gender stereotypes of or ideas about readers, and other intersectional gender consequences. My research will primarily be focused on the exploration of the placing of genres in the space and the gender aspect of visitors preferences when choosing literature. I will deal with choices of setting of library branches and other services they offer, in specific locations. Keywords Gender, Space, Prague Central Library, library, feminism, feminist geography
