German international development cooperation in Latin America
Zavadilová, Barbora ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Eberle, Jakub (referee)
The bachelor thesis discusses the German development policy in Latin America between years 1990 and 2011. The region is not considered to be a part of German key strategic interests. However, the Federal republic plays a role of a "global donor" and supports the countries of Latin America significantly and carries out major development projects there. The thesis will firstly present the basic political context, describe the mutual relationships between Germany and Latin America and analyse key interests that are the base for the development cooperation. In the following part, the concept of a civilian power will be applied to the German development policy in the region to observe to which amount the character of the cooperation corresponds with the basic attributes of foreign policy of a normative-oriented civilian power as an ideal type. Statements of the executive representatives, government policy papers, statistical data and opinions of the academic sectors undergo the analysis. The aim of this paper is to present the development policy with the monitored region in its complexity and analyse which meanings do the German actors assign to the examined reality.
The Red Army Fraction - Left Terrorism in Germany
Kříž, Miroslav ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Pešek, Jiří (referee)
This thesis deals with the theme of the Red Army Fraction. Special emphasis is put on the cooperation between the West-German terrorist organization and the State Security of the German Democratic Republic. This thesis follows genesis of the left terrorism in the Federal Republic of Germany in the context of cooperation with the GDR Ministry of Security. The first part of the work analyses the origin of the group, followed by its activities until the end. The next part is devoted to a brief survey of bilateral contacts of both the German states from the mid 60s to the late 80s of the last century. This is the basis for the following chapter. The relevant part of this thesis is represented by chapter 3 which gives analysis of the competition between Stasi and RAF terrorist groups, from the early contacts of the 1st RAF generation members. It mentions the participation of Bewegung 2.Juni terrorist group in the development of the true competition of the so called Second Generation of RAF and Stasi, and, consequently, chapter 3 offers the analysis of the reasons for which the special RAF terrorist group left for the GDR {the so called aussteigers}, from their integration, special tasks fulfilling in the frame of the conception of RAF -Stasi cooperation until their arrest in 1990. The final part of chapter 1 is...
The Visegrad cooperation in the Czech foreign policy since the year 2003
Kříž, Václav ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Vykoukal, Jiří (referee)
The thesis is focusing on the issue of the role of the Visegrad cooperation in the Czech foreign policy since the year 2003. The aim is to clarify what role did the Visegrad co-operation or rather individual Czech presidencies of the Visegrad Group (2003-2004, 2006-2007, 2011-2012) have in the Czech foreign agenda. The thesis tries to answer based on the diachronic comparison if in the case of the topic of the Visegrad cooperation it is possible to talk about lack of the political interest, which means basically that the agenda of the cooperation is defined by the state's bureaucratic apparatus. The main focus is aimed at the role of the Government of the Czech Republic in the process while it is the main player of the Czech foreign policy. For this reason there are sources analyzed as for instance concept documents o the governments as well as literature, which provides better insights to what actually was achieved during the period of the Czech presidencies. The analyses confirms that in case of the Visegrad cooperation it is appropriate to speak about the lack of the political interests and in the same time about rather successful managing of the presidencies by the bureaucratic apparatus. The thesis might possibly serve as bases for the further study of the topic.
The Czech-German Military-Security Cooperation vs. the Arising Strategic Culture of the Czech Republic
Stojanovová, Kamila ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Dvořák, Pavel (referee)
This bachelor thesis depicts the Czech-German military-security cooperation in context of the security cultures of both countries. It focuses on the specific German strategic culture, however, the process of emerging strategic culture in the case of Czech Republic as a possible limiting factor for the military cooperation with Germany has also been pointed out. The theoretical base of this work are the concepts of political- military culture from Thomas U. Berger and strategic culture from Kerry Longhurst. The key criteria for the compatibility-analysis of both strategic cultures are the historical experience with the use of military force, the attitudes to army and use of force across the political elite, in the public opinion and in strategic papers, and the legitimation process of military missions. According to this, the aim of the work is to find the reason why in the period prior to the accession of Czech Republic to NATO the cooperation in the political and practical spheres didn't take place in the same intensity. At the same time, it tries to find the reason why the participation of the Czech Army in PRT Faizabad has been the only significant moment in the military cooperation with Germany after the NATO-accession in 1999. However, this work doesn't leave out the recent development, which...
The PDS and the political consequences of its government responsibility in Berlin 2001-2006
Kafka, Václav ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Nigrin, Tomáš (referee)
The diploma thesis "The PDS and the political consequences of its government responsibility in Berlin 2001-2006" deals with the acting of the German political party PDS (Party of democratic socialism, today Die Linke - The Left Party) in the government of the federal city-state Berlin. The matter is interesting because of the PDS's complicated character - some other parties in the German political landscape see the PDS (Die Linke) nearly as an extremist grouping. Another important fact is that the PDS is in fact the successor-party of the East German communist SED. These are the main reasons why the party's first entry to the state government in Mecklenburg- Western Pomerania in 1998 and then - three years later - in Berlin raised a heavy debate in Germany. In the case of Berlin - which I focus on - was the debate more intensive because of Berlin's specific role (it's the capital city of the reunited Germany) and history. Moreover, Berlin is notorious for its financial problems. That's why the new leftist government raised distrust of a broad community. Nevertheless, it needs to be said that involvement of some members of the right-wing CDU in a big financial scandal helped the PDS to reach its up-to-now best election result in the 2001 poll. The coalition of the PDS and the SPD (Social Democratic Party)...

Research has shown that Islamophobia is produced by prejudice and fear of the uknown. It builds to extend the work of other scholars which have previously looked into this issue, by testing the theory and combining numerous factors together. This study therefore asks: Do economic factors and the influence of news outlets and political parties lead to negative perceptions of Muslims and therefore support Islamophobia in Slovakia? Based on this question, primary and secondary qualitivave research was conducted to test to which extent media, politics and economic situation affect perception of refugees. Analysis of responces indicated that the biggest factors contributing to Islamophobia was prejudice conducted and spread by news oultets and politians, with economic economy playing a big role in people perceived safety of their welfare first. German Foreign Cultural Policy in the Czech Republic after 1989: Promotion of the German Language
Boťová, Kateřina ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Baštová, Petra (referee)
This thesis deals with German foreign cultural policy in the Czech Republic after 1989 in relation to the promotion of German language promotion. The thesis describes both the development of the conceptions of German foreign cultural policy and the promotion of German language based on activities of three German institutions: Central Agency for German Schools Abroad (ZfA), Goethe-Institut and German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The research period is divided in two parts -before 1999 and since 2000, because the thesis assumes that there have been changes concerning quantity and quality of German policy regarding language promotion since about 2000. In addition the thesis searches for the effects on the real measures in the Czech Republic concerning the conceptual changes in German policy. After the 90's when the German was promoted massively in the Czech Republic as well as in the whole region of Central and Eastern Europe, the promotion of German has been rather declining since 2000. It is given by the lowering interest in the region just as by the lower importance that was attributed to the promotion of German. Simultaneously the number of people learning German in the Czech Republic has fallen rapidly. Lately the German actors have tried to counteract this trend by renewing their effort in...
