Weather forecast as communication. Information value and manipulating strategy
Bělohlávková, Kateřina ; Janovec, Ladislav (referee) ; Chejnová, Pavla (advisor)
The topic of the Bachelor's thesis is Weather forecast as communication. Information value and manipulating strategy and it is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part provides the explanation of weather forecast, information values, information transmission and its coding, of the problem of manipulation and its strategy. The information is borrowed from technical literature and some articles dealing with this topic. The practical part results from a questionnaire which is mainly focused on the problem of understanding and a right interpretation of the terminology used in weather forecast. On the basis of gained results I try to demonstrate that the apparent manipulation is actually based on wrong decoding of weather forcast and misunderstanding of the forecast terminology. The results are illustrated by quantitative tables and graphs which are followed by my own interpretation. The conclusion of this Bachelor's thesis shows that recipients are not able to decode weather forecast in a proper way. They mostly misunderstand information inserted in weather forecast that leads them to the feeling of being manipulated.
Conception of youth in Czech in comparison with other european languages
Vašíčková, Andrea ; Chejnová, Pavla (referee) ; Janovec, Ladislav (advisor)
The present thesis derives information from three main sources which helped us analyse how native speakers of four European languages perceive, understand and evaluate youth. We used dictionaries, corpuses and a questionnaire research to study the meanings, metaphors, colours, images and emotions speakers connect with youth. According to the dictionaries, the prototypical bearers of youth are creatures and plants. The dictionaries of synonyms prove that the meaning of the word youth partially overlaps with the meaning of the word childhood, and thus, depending on the context, we can understand youth either as a hyperonym of childhood, or as its synonym. In all the four languages a prototypical young person has not come of age and there is a secondary meaning of the word youth as a state of the body and mind creating an illusion of a younger age. Czech phraseology shows that we speak about human youth using metaphors of birds' youth and unripe plants which gives our image of youth green colour. Czech proverbs characterise youth as a period of joy, growth, health, energy, mobility and learning on the one hand, and inexperience and unwiseness on the other hand. Some proverbs (a young idler, an old beggar or who so learnt young forgets not when he is old) exist in many languages, express general human wisdom...

Irony as a perlocutionary act. A pragmatic analysis of ironic utterances
Rosická, Irena ; Holanová, Radka (referee) ; Chejnová, Pavla (advisor)
The aim of my thesis is to collect and then analyse authentic ironic utterances from specific area. The emphasis is put primarily on irony signalizing and irony understanding. The phenomenon of the irony is looked from a pragmatic point of view and analysed with respect to Theory of Politeness and Grice's Cooperative Principle. We made a further remark about signaling ironic utterances, confirmed the hypothesis about irony signalizing and showed the most frequent language signals. We showed the preconditions which are necessary for irony understanding and explained the relation to Theory of Politeness, Cooperative Principle and Brown and Levinson's "face-saving" politeness theory. We showed, that irony is more frequently used in negative situations (as ironic critisism) than in positive ones. But we found out that there are the examples of ironic critisism which are far less face threatening than literally spoken ones. At the end of the thesis we tried to propose own classification based on pragmatic functions of irony.
