Copenhagen School of Security Studies - Societal Dimension and the Case of Egypt Securitization and its Impact on Human Rights
Hulínová, Beáta ; Ditrych, Ondřej (advisor) ; Střítecký, Vít (referee)
The aim of this paper is to find out whether the securitization theory of the Copenhagen School is applicable outside euro-american space. This topic is chosen because of the contradicting opinions of theorists regarding the universality of the theory. Many authors criticize also the disregard of the process, context, pictures or physical actions. The theory is applied in societal sector in Egypt on nine cases including human rights non-governmental organizations, political opponents, critics and asylum seekers. The development of securitization, implementation of extraordinary measures, results and impact of the securitization are monitored in these cases. Attention is paid also to the fact whether securitization took into consideration context, process and whether pictures and physical actions played any role and what role it was. Method used in the paper is instrumental case study. It aims at the explanation of narrowly defined case on the basis of the theory. In the stated cases the threats to identity are presented as "others", alien and with the exception of one case as "Western" which means different from the Egyptian identity. The implementation of extraordinary measures to deal with the threats then becomes legitimate. The main contribution of the paper is the finding that the...
From Developmentalism to Mobilisation: The Case of Georgian Violent Transition
Střítecký, Vít ; Drulák, Petr (advisor) ; Plechanovová, Běla (referee) ; Ditrych, Ondřej (referee)
This thesis seeks to conceptualize a link between the phenomenona of developmentalist state and ethnopolitical mobilization while arguing that the study of post-developmental transition should be based on a complex framework involving crucial social, economic, and political processes. The argument begins with the overview of the approaches of the late/post-Soviet transition, which are critically assessed on the basis of their anchoring in the modernization paradigm. The thesis then turns to the formulation of the alternative theoretical explanation based on the sound theoretical observations from the field of historical sociology. The theoretical debate leads to the formulation of the model involving three causal mechanisms connecting the macro and micro levels. Empirically, the thesis argues that Georgian violent mobilization resulted from the processes that were determined by the functioning and decline of the Soviet developmentalist state. While accepting the dynamics of ethnopolitical mobilization it seeks to answer the question which socio-economic processes breed these mobilizations.

Conflict Prevention in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan
Zalánová, Zuzana ; Klimešová, Martina (advisor) ; Ditrych, Ondřej (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with conflict prevention in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. Its aim was to compare its relevance and results in the both countries. In doing so, the first theoretical section outlined the way of assessing conflict potential, which conditions and justifies applying preventative measures. This was examined in terms of Copenhagen school and its broaden meaning of security, whereas the paper focused on the political, economic and societal dimension. Then the notion of conflict prevention was framed within terminological and historical context and considered in terms of its trends and current challenges. At the end of the theoretical section, the concepts if security dimensions and conflict prevention were discussed in terms of their applicability for the case studies of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. Afterwards, the empirical section researched the conflict potential and preventive actions of international organisations, states and non-state actors in the both countries. Analytical part evaluated the empirical data in order to assess conflict prevention in the both states. In doing so, I used SWOT analysis, which defined strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of conflict prevention in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. The results can be summarised as follows: The character...

The Master's Thesis Organized Crime and Failed States Nexus - Afghanistan after 2001 presents the relation between these two relatively new security phenomenon on the example of the situation in Afghanistan after the year 2001. The analysis explores political, economic and conflict related factors that inhibit the narcotics industry and the cooperation between insurgent movements, drug trafficking organization, the warlord organizations and the state power holders. The first and second chapters present the theoretical base and concept and the methodology for the whole analysis. After that a short presentation of the historical overview takes place where the roots of the different roles and actors are explored. The main chapter then presents the actual case study of the situation of Afghanistan after the year 2001 and brings the analysis of the relation between organized crime and the process of state failure.
Separatism as a Security Threat - Cases of Spain and Great Britain
Plesný, Martin ; Karásek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Ditrych, Ondřej (referee)
This thesis deals with security consequences of separatism in four regions: the Basque Country, Catalonia, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. The thesis is based on the assumption that separatism has impact on states' security not only through activities of separatist movements but that also the possibility of a success of separatist efforts poses a potential threat to the security of the state. The theoretical ground of the study is the extended concept of security, the thesis deals - along with terrorism - with impacts of a potential secession of a territory on particular sectors of security. Using a comparation of security consequences of the four separatist movements, the analysis comes to a conclusion saying which of them poses the most serious threat to its respective state. The thesis also illustrates the usefulness of the extended concept of security for studying security consequences of separatism
