Corporate tax rates: A new area of international cooperation?
Hrušč, Erik ; Parízek, Michal (advisor) ; Kučerová, Irah (referee)
This thesis analyses the potential for international cooperation in the issue of corporate tax rates. Using newly created dataset we study the relationship between the foreign direct investments and corporate tax rates in order to confirm that countries benefit from competing in setting their tax rates. Lowering one's corporate tax rate pays off in increased FDI. Furthermore, under the assumption that competitive behavior is individually rational, we analyze through the use of coherent country clusters the extent of competition within selected clusters, as compared to the situation on the global level. We find that the degree of competitive behavior is lower within coherent block of countries than globally. Thus, there seems to be less mutually harmful competition within coherent clusters of countries, mainly in EU 15, OECD and ASEAN, than on the global level.
East African Community and Theories of Regional Integration
Krajník, Jan ; Karlas, Jan (advisor) ; Parízek, Michal (referee)
This paper presents a case study of a regional integration called East African Community (EAC) that associates Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda later joined Rwanda and Burundi. The main research question is the reason for creation of the EAC. Congruence method is used to answer this question with further investigation to confirm existence of the causal relationship. There are three theories used to formulate a hypothesis concerning formation of the EAC - neofunctionalism, realism and liberal theory of international relation in the form reformulated by Andrew Moravcsik. Neofunctionalism cannot explain emergence of the EAC as strong supranational actor, key neofunctionalists feature, is not present. Spillover process also does not occur. Realism also fails to provide an explanation, although the end of the Cold War brings shift in global power structure. East Africa is also endangered by economic marginalization caused by integration of other parts of the continent. However intrastate and regional political instability and security threats were more important at that time. The EAC also does not correspond with the notion of only low politics integration. Liberalism offers most reasonable explanation that integration is based on common interest in development and fight against poverty. Common historical...

Networks of Interest Groups - Interest Groups, their Positions and Relations in EU Legislative Process
Bubeníčková, Veronika ; Karlas, Jan (advisor) ; Parízek, Michal (referee)
This diploma thesis examines networking of interest groups. It presents potentional entrance points for influencing legislative processes in the EU. The thesis focuses mainly on European Commission's public consultations. It tries to answer the question whether the interest groups cooperate strategically or whether they try to reach their goals on their own. This thesis is grounded in the framework of the network theory and uses the method of graphic modeling. For the research we have selected three areas of European Commission's consultations. The participating interest groups were chosen based on their characteristics and the consultations they took part in. We have found out that among the interest groups gathered around European Commission there is no close collaboration taking place. Furthermore, the interest groups act rather spontaneously as they are generally only taking part in individual consultations. Only 12.3% of them participated in more than one consultation and they were mainly registered organizations.

Miková, Ivana ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Parízek, Michal (referee)
UNIVERZITA KARLOVA FAKULTA SOCIÁLNÍCH VĚD INSTITUT POLITOLOGICKÝCH STUDIÍ Vplyv implementácie práv duševného vlastníctva na rozvoj vnútorného trhu NAFTA Bc. Ivana Miková MAGISTERSKÁ DIPLOMOVÁ PRÁCE Praha 2013 Abstract: The thesis discusses the impact of intellectual property rights on economic development of NAFTA. It is based on the theoretical assumptions of the new institutional economics and its notion of transaction costs and institutions and their impact on economic growth, in particular the impact of intellectual property rights, which are an important part of the NAFTA treaty and are contained in chapter 17. of the NAFTA Agreement. Their impact is connected with the new growth theory, which considers innovation and new technology as a major source of economic development. The empirical analysis has found that measures of IPRs contributed to transfer technologies and economic development. Mexico has become the main beneficiary. In the U.S., the situation in the field of innovation and economic development associated with IPRs has not changed significantly, compared with the period before the emergence of NAFTA.
Russia`s World Trade Organization entrance
Koláček, Ondřej ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Parízek, Michal (referee)
Why have Russia been accessing the World Trade Organization for 19 years? What were the main preconditions for hard negotiation, that took almost two full decades? The diploma thesis is written as a case study, analysing Russia's accession to the World Trade Organization from the economical point of view and political aspects of the negotiations. The data about new members after 1995 of the organization are used to verify the hypothesis. ! First part of the thesis is the analysis of the rules of the World Trade Organization for new members acceptance. The rules and processes strongly influence the final outcome of the negotiation. The economic indicators which are not set, the right of each member to veto and the operations of the working group on both bilateral and multilateral level are crucial. ! The second part is focused on the Russian accession to the organization itself. First is (being) researched the impact of applicant's economical influence based on the GDP. According to data about 30 applicants, which entered the World Trade Organization, there is no straight relation to the lenght of the process. Then the nine Schelling's categories of the negotiations were analysed. The most important is the continuos negotiation, defined as a parallel negotiation or a conflict between an applicant...
Reform of the IMF Real empowerment of developing countries or just a gesture?
Kroupa, Michal ; Plechanovová, Běla (advisor) ; Parízek, Michal (referee)
Recently implemented reform of the IMF was motivated by empowering smaller developing and emerging countries. My work has an ambition to assess the countries were empowered and whether there would be a more efficient way for IMF reform. I analyse of role and power of countries using well-established methodology of Voting Power Indices. Apart from the immediate change a longer perspective covering last 20 years would be implemented. My aim is not only assess the power of countries as isolated variables but also to assess them in context of other indicators such as economic development. Lastly, I would suggest a new way of reform proposal for the IMF. Currently countries are represented in the locus of executive power through constituencies. Constituencies are formed arbitrary often reflecting power-seeking behaviour of developed countries. The result is composition of constituencies that often further marginalize the developing countries. My proposal is to restructure these constituencies in line with regional international organizations, which can enhance the position of developing countries in two ways. By providing institutional capacity of already existing organizations the consensus within the constituency would be better facilitated. By formation constituencies in line with regional...
The Organizational-Cybernetic Approach to International Institutions
Parízek, Michal ; Karlas, Jan (advisor) ; Plechanovová, Běla (referee) ; Krpec, Oldřich (referee)
The Organizational-Cybernetic Approach to International Institutions Michal Parízek Abstract of the dissertation One of the key tasks of the institutionalist research in international relations should be to explore how the functioning of international institutions can be enhanced through alterations of their design, where design is understood as the only factor that can have a direct causal effect on the institutions' functioning and that, at the same time, is at least in principle amenable to conscious manipulation. The task of this dissertation is to elaborate on whether this can be at all done and, if yes, how exactly and under what conditions. To deal with these problems, I present what is best labelled as the organizational-cybernetic approach, a theoretical and conceptual framework based on insights from the field of organizational cybernetics. Building on the organizational-cybernetic framework, I outline the concept of information transmission capacity as the right dependent variable for the study of how design impacts on functioning of institutions. Subsequently I present the viable system model, an organizational- cybernetic model that identifies on a general level all the key information channels necessary for viability of any governance scheme. Using this approach, we can proceed in the...
UNRWA and its activities in selected Middle East countries
Hlaváčová, Lenka ; Šánová, Lucie (advisor) ; Parízek, Michal (referee)
The main aim of this master thesis is analyze role of UNRWA in the Middle East in 1950- 2010 based on the collected data. The main focus is on the population growth tendencies which are often criticized as the result of the UNRWA politics and which might be prolonging the conflict in the area. Second part of this thesis focuses on the elementary and preparatory education at UNRWA schools. Based on the research done, it was concluded that UNRWA isn't responsible of Palestinian refugee growth as it is the result of population growth in region and the result of foreign events. In question of elementary and preparatory education, the decreasing percentage tendencies in attendance at UNRWA run schools have been observed despite multiplication of the refugee population. This might be a result of failing to accommodate to the needs of Palestinian refugees.
