Experiencing the Body and Self-Concept in People with Acquired Physical Disability
Ištoková, Lucie ; Pařízek, Michal (advisor) ; Preclíková, Andrea (referee)
The bachelor thesis "Experiencing the body and self-concept in people with acquired physical disability" tries to reveal how people with acquired physical disability perceive their physical body and how changes in physical experience and self-concept are intertwined. The work draws primarily from literature dealing with the philosophy of the body, the health consequences of paralysis and self- concepts within the range of social psychology. The second source is six interviews conducted with people after spinal cord injury in which I ask the circumstances of paralysis and the physical and psychological experiencing of paralysis. Based on literature review and interviews it is not possible to say that the change of the body is the primary trigger for changes in self-perception, however, the paralyzed body gets extra attention. It includes the lowered height position, health complications, the consequences arising from the loss of sensation in the affected parts or the need for increased care for physical fitness. People with such injury face a different view of the society, transformation in the partnership's role, insecurity in self-confidence and other facts, which are generally reflected in their self- concept. A FAREWELL TO ARMS: NON-MILITARISATION AND THE PARADOX OF MILITARY INSECURITY
Williams, Nathan James Frank ; Kučera, Tomáš (advisor) ; Parízek, Michal (referee)
A FAREWELL TO ARMS: NON-MILITARISATION AND THE PARADOX OF MILITARY INSECURITY Nathan James Frank Williams Abstract A small number of scholars and political leaders have praised the economic and social benefits of 'non-militarisation' - the policy of possessing no national armed forces. While 26 states currently practice this policy, the security implications of non-militarisation have, until now, largely escaped critical assessment. However, it is this very question of security in the absence of a military which is perhaps the decisive issue for any state considering non- militarisation. Barbey's (2015b) study suggests that, since World War II, non-militarised states have been immune to interstate war. However, since World War II, intrastate war has proven to be both the more frequent and destructive form of warfare. Using a mixed-methods approach this dissertation seeks to quantify and explain the causal effect of non-militarisation on intrastate conflict. It begins by testing the hypothesis that non-militarised states suffer less years of intrastate war than states with a military, using cross-sectional logit analysis on all country-years between 1989-2008. It consistently finds a sizable negative relationship, suggesting that in a given year the probability of intrastate war occurring in a...
The state and non-state actors' approach to the UN Global Compact - the case of the Czech Republic
Krummerová, Ivona ; Parízek, Michal (advisor) ; Plechanovová, Běla (referee)
The thesis examines the approach of state and non-states actors to the UN Global Compact in the Czech Republic. The case of the Czech Republic has been chosen for the analysis since there has been much lower engagement level of companies in the UN Global Compact than in other European countries. The aim of the thesis is to discover how particular actors from the state and non-governmental sectors influence the engagement of companies in the UN Global Compact, and to find out the main causes of low engagement of companies in the initiative. The method of process tracing is used to explore causal relations between the variables. The qualitative data collected from the interviews with the representatives of governmental institutions, international non-governmental organisations, platforms of social responsibility, trade unions, and companies have been used as the main source. The main causes of the low engagement level of companies in the UN Global Compact have been identified as including: the passivity of the state and the absence of coherent national strategy for corporate social responsibility (CSR); the non-involvement of the non-governmental organisations in the promotion of UN Global Compact principles although their influence differs according to the character of the organisation; the lack of...
ASEAN: Regional Security Complex or Case of Successful Integration?
Smith Kiganda, Alžběta ; Střítecký, Vít (advisor) ; Parízek, Michal (referee)
The thesis analyzes the development of the security discourse in Southeast Asia namely on the ground of the ASEAN organization and in its member states. The thesis main aim is to find out whether the region of the ASEAN can be considered as the Regional Security Complex. The theoretical basis of the thesis is drawn from the theoretical concept of the Copenhagen school, specifically on researchers such as, Barry Buzan, Ole Wæver and Jaap de Wilde, who formulated the theory. The theory applicability is studied through the securitization processes elaborated on the sectoral analysis. On the military, political, economic, environmental and societal sector the thesis strives to analyze the essential securitization and desecuritization processes, attempts to name the main securitization actors, referential objects and confront them with the theory. Based on the elaboration on the current issues connected with the securitization logic the thesis describes the security dynamic in the region. At the end of analysis, the thesis evaluates the current regional setting of the ASEAN as the Regional Security Complex and gives the recommendations for its next developments.
