The goal is liberty: How the U.S. and China fit between economic and political freedom
Winkler, Kristina ; Cahlík, Tomáš (advisor) ; Hlaváček, Jiří (referee)
Kristina Winkler [kristyna.winkler@gmail.com] IEPS Master's Thesis Proposal December 2010 Proposed title of thesis: The goal is liberty: How the U.S. and China fit between economic and political freedom. Name of supervisor: Tomas Cahlik cahlik@fsv.cuni.cz) Short outline of your proposed line of argument (including potential chapters) and the methodology you plan to use: I believe in Milton Friedman's idea that there is a tie between economic freedom and political Freedom. I believe in the idea that once economic freedom is lost, political and other freedoms will also follow suite. Having one form of freedom without the other unequalizes things and ultimately things will need to change. I'm not putting a strict time limit on how long things will take to change but I do believe that it is inevitable. In this paper I will be discussing the relation between economic and political freedom, how they feed and affect each other. I will used the United States and China in the modern context as examples and case studies relating to my concept of economic and political freedom. I will also justify my reasoning for why I believe that maintaining freedom in economic and political realms is important and needs to be preserved. I believe that Socialism trades society's supreme ideal of freedom for the hazy concept of...

Krchnák, Peter ; Cahlík, Tomáš (advisor) ; Hlaváček, Jiří (referee)
1 Abstract This thesis provides an extensive comparative analysis of India and China. This analysis may be divided into two parts. The first one deals with the political development and the contemporary political situation in these countries, and the second one focuses on the economic development and the present state of the economy. The first part of the first chapter examines the political development of China. It is focused on the history in the 19th and the 20th century and it shows that it was quite turbulent after the fall of the feudalism. It concludes with the period after the death of Mao. The second part of the first chapter talks about the political development in India, mainly while India was a British colony. Second chapter provides a comparative analysis of the contemporary political systems in India and China. It shows that in India the citizens are able to influence the politics more than in China. With the third chapter, the second part of the thesis begins. The third chapter analyzes the development of the Chinese economy especially since 1980s. That is when the Chinese government started to implement substantial economic changes into the system. These changes have changed the planned economy of China to something what resembles very closely the market economy. The fourth chapter is...

The financial crisis in Russia in 1998 : Why was ruble devaluation?
Baikovskaya, Tatsiana ; Tegze, Miron (advisor) ; Hlaváček, Jiří (referee)
This thesis aims to analyze the financial crisis in Russia in 1998, which combined a currency crisis, a debt crisis and a banking crisis. The main purpose of the work is to analyze the main reasons that lead up to the crisis. I argue that the mainstream theoretical models of currency crisis do not capture every aspect of the whole magnitude of the events in Russian economic system by August 1998. In order to explain the whole complexity of Russian financial turmoil it is absolutely necessary to analyze the origins that stood behind the crisis, which I consider to be found in country's economic structure, institutional environment and political processes. Consumption over the life cycle : evidence from the Czech Republic
Cahlíková, Jana ; Hlaváček, Jiří (referee) ; Zápal, Jan (advisor)
The main goal of this thesis is to analyze life-cycle consumption using Czech microeconomic data from the 2000-2008 Household Budget Survey (HBS). Inspired by Gourinchas and Parker (2002), who analyzed life-cycle consumption on American data, we construct the Czech average household life-cycle consumption and income profiles. It is found that the Czech average consumption profile is increasing over the whole life-cycle and there is no hump-shape in the profile, contrary to the American results. Consumption tracks income early in life and a breakpoint in household behavior is identified at age 45. Czech evidence on household consumption is interpreted in the context of the Certainty-Equivalent Life-Cycle Hypothesis Model and in the context of the Gourinchas & Parker (2002) Model of life-cycle consumption under income uncertainty, which brings a significant value-added for interpretation of the Czech profiles. The household behavior is interpreted by varying strengths of the precautionary (assuring against income uncertainty) and retirement motives for savings over the life. It is found that the Czech household life-cycle behavior can be interpreted in the similar way as the behavior of the US households.
Microeconomic modelling of the behaviour on the financial markets - trading with derivatives
Koľová, Viera ; Hlaváček, Jiří (advisor) ; Janda, Karel (referee)
Financial markets represent a large comlex with a lot of factors. What is for the agents, who are trading on the financial markets important, is to set a method of predicting the future spot price of the assets and the risk, resulting from their positions. Financial derivatives are instruments, those trading depends on the future spot prices predictions and are used for speculative purposes or for hedging. Black-Scholes equation implies the option price, but concludes some not real assumptions. The way, how to determine the option price and to avoid the assumptions in Black-Scholes equation, is to start from the option writer' variation of wealth. Cejpová, Irena ; Hlaváček, Jiří (advisor) ; Mücke, Pavel (referee)
The main topic of the thesis is a description of the transformation of the Sport Cynology during the second half of the 20th century in the Liberec region. The sport is based on cooperation between people and dogs. This hobby belongs to the most popular freetime activities in the Czech Republic, even though there is not enough information in Czechoslovak historiography. The aim of the thesis consists in a characterization of development of the Sport Cynology in the era of State Socialism in Czechoslovakia in the second half of the 20th century. I focus on a historical progress of the sport and its significant events, which were crucial for the next development of the sport activity. In the context of the Sport Cynology, "The Association for Cooperation with the Army" is mentioned because Czechoslovak cynology had to become a part of the association in 1953. In the first section of the paper, focused on history of the cynology, I use archival materials, contemporary magazines and information got from interviews with narrators. I apply qualitative research and its specific methods such as analysis of documents and thematically oriented biographical narratives. Key words: Sport Cynology, State Socialism, Liberec region, The Association for Cooperation with the Army, Contemporary History, Oral History.
