Sociological aspects of translation norms in legal environments

This thesis paper attempts to discover the processes used to set up and negotiate translation norms in legal environments. It is based on the existing theoretical knowledge of legal translation and on the theoretical works on translation norms, especially the works by Gideon Toury, Theo Hermans, Andrew Chesterman and other authors. The aim of this thesis paper is to confront these theories with the every-day experiences of translating in legal environments. The research method used for this purpose is qualitative sociological research - a combination of the analytical procedures of grounded theory first drafted by Strauss and Glaser and data collection procedures based on "problem-centered interviews" and on the investigation of documents. The total of 10 respondents - translators who work or have worked in law firms - have participated in the survey. Legal translation is very specific in terms of the processes whereby translation norms are set up and negotiated. The key issue is the issue of liability. Translators employed in law firms are not liable for the final wording of the translation - it is the lawyer who is held liable for the translation that forms a part of his or her legal service or advice. Author-addressee relationship in art textbooks and its translation from Spanish into Czech

The existence of an author and an addressee is inherent to every communicative process. The author and the addressee are considered important stylistic factors, since they determine a great deal the overall composition of the text. When writing his text, the author caters for the expectations and the competence of the addressee, and on the other hand, the addressee receives and interprets his text according to how it is formulated and how it complies with the conventions for the text type in question. The relation between the author and the addressee is reflected in the text and this reflection could be called "polarity". Polarity may be perceived in the composition of the rhetorical perspective, for it is expressed by the use of the second person singular and of the first person singular or plural, by the use of rhetorical questions and exclamatory phrases, by anticipating the reactions of the addressee, etc. The relation between the partners in the communication is governed by norms and since norms do not coincide in all cultures, we have to bear in mind that to render successfully the original and to meet with the expectations of our addressee we have to cross the cultural barrier and adjust the polarity of the text. Expression of interpropositional relationships in the translation of bilateral international treaties

This extended essay deals with the theme of expression of interpropositional relationships in the translation of bilateral international treaties. In the theoreticalempirical part we characterize generally the functional law style and then we define its features both in the Czech and in the Spanish languages. We offer a short synopsis of its different genres covered by this functional style. We study the question of legal translation and distinguish its two fundamental types - the instrumentally and the documentary translation. We present the genre of bilateral international treaty. By summarizing the information contained in the specialized literature and the translation analysis we determine its dominant features both in the Czech and in the Spanish languages (with the exception of the area of interpropositional relationships which will be dealt by detail 113 in the empirical part of our essay). The area of the interpropositional relationships follows by defining them as the object of our research. The empirical part is elaborated by the method of a qualitative research. Professionally provided support for students with visual impairment at universities

Universities in the Czech Republic are taking more and more responsibility for the quality of the education of their visually impaired students. Not only are they provided with basic and specialised services but study support centres with a special infrastructure are also being established. The level of the particular services and their range, however, differ - very often substantially - at various universities. This thesis, therefore, seeks to answer the question concerning under what conditions the system of study support for this target group of students arises and what particular supporting study activities it brings. In the theoretical section of the thesis information is collected as to what topics are being covered in the literature that is commonly available and what these sources actually reveal to social workers involved in the field of study support. Apart from that, individual study support centres are mapped in detail: their origin and mutual differences, as well as their contribution to both students and professionals.

Annotated translation: La vida cotidiana de los espanoles

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to create a functionally equivalent translation of the non-literary text in Spanish on the fashion in Spain from the sociological viewpoint. The translation constitutes the first part of the thesis. In the second part, the original text is analysed and the main translation problems are presented together with their solutions. These are accompanied by concrete examples from the target text.
