Šauerová, Jana ; Cebe, Jan (advisor) ; Nečas, Vlastimil (referee)
Diploma thesis "Framing of sea arrivals of the migrants and refugees in the Italian press in 2011 and 2014" examines how Italian newspapers cover the topic of sea arrivals of migrants and refugees from North Africa during the Arab Spring and an exponential increase of arrivals in 2014, which heralded the migration crisis. At the first part of the thesis, theoretical concepts are summarized, including framing, securitization theory and moral panic, and researches of media representation and framing of the immigration. The theoretical section is followed by the contextual part. Within the analysis, the work is based on the concept of framing and therefore the primarily observed aspects are the emphasized or hidden aspects of the phenomenon. A combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis was chosen as the approach for describing the framing of the topic. The aim of the qualitative analysis is a deeper understanding of the analyzed material, generation of a set of specific frames, their detailed description and definition, and subsequent designation of hypotheses. The aim of the quantitative content analysis is to quantify the specified variables and, based on the outcomes, to compare both periods and journals and to confirm or disprove hypotheses. Research results suggest that despite...
The Munich agreement and its reflection in the press/ The reflection of the Munich agreement in the press
Legátová, Alžběta ; Končelík, Jakub (advisor) ; Cebe, Jan (referee)
The Munich agreement signed on the 29th of September 1938 has always been giving rise to strong emotions in Czech society. This event, frequently described as "about us, without us", is a synonym for humiliation, injustice and a symbol of betrayal for many. The historian Jan Tesař holds a non-traditional point of view on this matter. He opposes this established interpretation and sees it as a source of origin of the so-called Munich Complex. The proposed diploma thesis focuses on this phenomenon, which is examined in printed media. Firstly, it provides a brief historical context and introduces an overview of different interpretations of Munich events within Czech historiography as well as describes the arguments of Tesař himself. Furthermore, the Munich complex is conceptualized and the resulting concept includes variables necessary for the research part of the thesis. This section consists of qualitative and quantitative analysis of the content of selected representative media samples. Among examined aspects are arguments used in the press, patterns of interpretation and attributed meanings. The time scope for analysis ranges from 1948 to 2018. Finally, the examination of the presence of aforementioned elements in selected samples and evolution of media bias throughout the time provides knowledge...

Štefanková, Kristýna ; Suk, Pavel (advisor) ; Cebe, Jan (referee)
The bachelor thesis deals with the media image of T. G. Masaryk at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in selected Czech media against the background of the Hilsner affair. The text details selected media outcomes in the monitored media: Šípy, Katolické listy, Právo lidu, Čas, Národní listy. Subsequently, it characterizes their main different features, which were described after comparing selected newspaper articles. The thesis also introduces the period of the 19th century and the Czech media scene, where you can find basic information about the monitored periodicals. Paper acquaints readers in detail with the process of L. Hilsner since the murder of A. Hrůzová, through the course of the investigation to his conviction. The person of T. G. Masaryk is also thoroughly analyzed. The aim of the thesis was to confirm or disprove the hypothesis that selected Czech media published articles about Masaryk in different wording. At the end of the work we come to confirm the given hypothesis, as already suggested by the theoretical starting point of the work. The Šípy, Katolické listy and Národní listy periodicals often made a negative image of Masaryk, not only in connection with the Hilsner affair. The Právo lidu was in favor of Masaryk at the beginning of the monitored period, the articles gradually...
Media and geopolitics: Background of the functioning of Czech media after 1991 in a global contect
Pařízková, Nikola ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Cebe, Jan (referee)
This thesis deals with the functioning of the media in the Czech Republic in the context of global changes after 1991. On the example of this country, it aims to understand how external influence on media within a certain state can be applied. The Czech Republic underwent a radical economic, political, social and cultural transformation with the end of the Cold War. This change was largely based on events in the international system. The main argument for this claim is that the Czech Republic is a small state located in the relatively strategic region of Central Eastern Europe. Given these and other conditions, it is almost impossible for the state to carry out an autonomous sovereign policy from a geopolitical point of view. It is influenced by the central players in the world system and relations between them. By this optics, the thesis also examines the functioning of the media. It tests the hypothesis that, even after the collapse of the Soviet Union and implementation of democratic and neoliberal frameworks, the external influence on the Czech media has not disappeared, only its essence has changed in relation to the wider global context. For this aim we chose primarily two indicators. One is the media legislation that has been adopted in the country since the late 1980s and is increasingly...

Božková, Lucie ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Cebe, Jan (referee)
Thesis: Operation Allied Force in Selected Czech Daily Newspapers Author: Mgr. Lucie Božková Annotation In my thesis Operation 'Allied Force' in Selected Czech Daily Newspapers I am tracing the representation of the topic - NATO's air strikes in the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (the so called Operation 'Allied Force') in 1999 in selected Czech Daily Newspapers. I am observing the effects, media's impact, frames and agenda setting. To support the integrity of the topic I added a chapter about the Kosovo crisis which enlightens the initiation of the air attacks. Furthermore, and mainly I am focusing on professional studies dealing with military news. The dominant theme of these articles is the foreign media coverage of the Kosovo War. In the experts 'outputs I predominantly center on their choosing and the method of analysis, on which I then base my analysis on. I decided to use the method of the quantitative content analysis for my own research. The first period of exploration is the bombing period (March 24, 1999 - June 10, 1999). Here the aim of my analysis is to find out what attention have the daily newspapers MF Dnes, Hospodářské noviny, Právo and Blesk paid to the Operation 'Allied Force'. In addition, I followed the placement of the articles, media resources and also the presentation of...

Normalization-era cinematography in Czech current television broadcasting
Jabůrek, Václav ; Štoll, Martin (advisor) ; Cebe, Jan (referee)
There are lots of studies about normalization cinematography, its content or historical context of its creation. But there was no research about its presence in post-communist television broadcast in the Czech Republic. This work takes a look on five biggest TV channels - ČT1, ČT2, Nova, Prima and Barrandov - in eight chosen years between 1994 and 2015. Content analysis shows, how are Czech televisions dealing with movies and series from communist era, and whether there are any long-term trends connected with this genre. Thanks to the research method, we can see how the usage of those titles has developed up to present. Study also focuses on programmes during weekends and holidays and the amount of normalization movies on these occasions. One part of this work is dealing with communist propaganda and its presence in current broadcast. As Harald Welzer's studies show, old movies are hugely affecting people's understanding of historical events. Therefore, this survey focuses on Czechoslovak movies, which are falsifying modern history such as TV series Thirty Cases of Major Zeman or comedy Bourlive vino. Apart from those cases, less propagandistic movies have also been examined. For example those showing idealized image of normalization society and values of the former regime.
