Sound track
Švarcová, Johana ; BENDOVÁ, Helena (advisor) ; ŠERÝ, Ladislav (referee)
I am interested in the sound track's autonomy within the framework of a film, and in the specific characteristics of a sound track's relation to the missing picture. I am equally interested in sound tracks in movies that are almost devoid of picture: films where the picture retreats and leaves the film space to sound. At present, film is usually understood as an audiovisual medium, with most audiences preferring picture to sound. In other words, in film, the majority views the picture as the foreground and the sound track as the film's background, something that accompanies it. From this perspective, I am interested in what is "hidden" for an average film viewer in the background of the film. In his text The Aesthetics of Failure, Kim Cascone explains the focus on the background in the following words: The basic composition of 'background' is comprised of data we filter out to focus on our immediate surroundings. The data hidden in our perceptual 'blind spot' contains worlds waiting to be explored, if we choose to shift our focus there. A part of my text is an analysis of Walter Ruttmann's film Wochenende, 1930. The text is also partially dedicated to works researching the border of visuality (e.g. Malevich's Black Square).
Docudrama on Czechoslovak television in seventies and eighties
Kohoutová, Rozálie ; ŠERÝ, Ladislav (advisor) ; KUBICA, Petr (referee)
My diploma thesis explores how the docudrama genre was used by the communistic propaganda during the period of so called normalization. I describe the role of Czechoslovak television during the Prague spring and it?s ensuing importance for the regime after the year 1968. I explore three TV series from formalistic, manipulative and historic point of view: Třicet případů majora Zemana (Thirty Causes of Major Zeman) Gottwald Povstalecká historie (Uprising History) I focus on the relationship between historical facts and the docudrama genre and in the last chapter I come to conclusion how the TV may influence perception of history and creates itself new mythology.
Availability of travelling and its impact on audiovisual arts
Doležálková, Klára ; ŠERÝ, Ladislav (advisor) ; DOLANOVÁ, Lenka (referee)
The way how world gets smaller and we can reach its other side tomorrow deeply affects the creative process. Not only that some artists live off from various grants (collected all over the world) but also the art created "on the way", such as a wide range of travel diaries, gets more attention. Can I really feel the day-to-day life of people I don 't know (and make a record of it), let's say, in three months?
Resemblance and Representation
Kliment, Jáchym ; CZUMALO, Vladimír (advisor) ; ŠERÝ, Ladislav (referee)
The thesis focuses on observation of resemblance, exploration of the identical and the different. At first, it considers analogy and comparation in a complex approach focusing on philosophy, logic, mathematics and linguistics. At the same time, resemblance is perceived in close connection to representation and image, semiotics, iconology, iconography, photography and processes ? as well as related concepts, such as mimesis, reference, representation, transformation, simulation, virtuality and hyperreality. The final part is concerned with resemblance and its effect on typology, original and copy ? identity, perceiving of authenticity and the function of memory. The key concepts are: non-causality of resemblance, analogy of proportionality in contrast to analogy of proportion, visual thinking and functionality of memory, resemblance as the basic power of image, and transformation as the principal form of representation.
Constructing Artificial Chaos
Hakl, Vilém ; VAJCHR, Marek (advisor) ; ŠERÝ, Ladislav (referee)
This work is about works of art which imitate chaos in terms of their structure. The focus of this work is POETICS OF CHAOS, in other words: specific techniques used to construct artificial chaos. The poetics of chaos is also explored through narration, the grotesque anti-myth about Eris, the Goddess of Chaos, and Paris, the prince of Troy, and his horrifying masturbation phantasy. The main field of this work is literature and film, but music and painting are also explored. The analysis of SPAS (a novel by Ivan Matousek) and ASTHENIC SYNDROME (a film by Kira Muratova) are included, because the structure of these masterpieces is brilliantly chaotic.
Reflection of world in virtual infinity
Krutský, Dominik ; ŠERÝ, Ladislav (advisor) ; ČIHÁK, Martin (referee)
Relation between humans and latest technical principles are forming rignt now. From my point of view, supported with literature are these fatal changes, interrelated just with formation total surroundings of virtual world, very often disregarded. In history overview, was art the major "record" in which the image of human being was best descirbed for current observers same as for next generations. The work should not find out a final solution for this complicated phenomen. Reason for choosing theme - Reflection of world in virtual infinity - is just my need to confront this question.

Antonin Artaud and film
