Impact of Potential EU Membership on Economy of Ukraine
Jascuk, Milana ; Cahlík, Tomáš (advisor) ; Baxa, Jaromír (referee)
Recently the topic of the future of Ukrainian economy has been attracting great attention among economists and politicians. The way how it should develop is widely discussed on the international arena. Economists and politicians cannot reach an agreement to which direction it is better to move for Ukraine. Nowadays a lot of special institutions have been created on both sides: in Ukraine and in Europe. The main goal of those is to control all the processes of transformation to be transparent on all levels; as well as prevent unlikely events. Of course, there are proponents and opponents of the moving to the free trade with the EU as for every global process. Among the young generation it is very clear, that possibilities, which gives us European Union are much more valuable and gainful. Even now, majority of students and researchers seek to apply or acquire some knowledge in European countries. I'm not an exception and for this reason, being a representative of young generation, I will try to determine potential impact on Economy of Ukraine assuming integration to European Union. It is very important to consider both threats and benefits of such processes as they are taking place on very high level. Therefore, in this work it will be considered both contours of development for Economy of Ukraine....

Abdul Zaher, Noor ; Cahlík, Tomáš (advisor) ; Chytilová, Julie (referee)
Bachelor's Thesis Proposal Institute of Economic Studies Faculty of Social Sciences Charles University in Prague Author's name and surname: Noor Abdul Zaher E-mail: noor_naimi@hotmail.com Phone: +420-774- 319370 Supervisor's name: doc. Ing. Tomáš Cahlík, CSc. Supervisor's email: cahlik@fsv,cuni.cz Notes: Please enter the information from the proposal to the Student Information System (SIS) and submit the proposal signed by you and by the supervisor to the Academic Director ("garant") of the undergraduate program. Proposed Topic: Economic Impact of the Climate Change By: Noor Abdul Zaher Research Question: Can the short term positive impacts of climate change offset the negative outcomes across different regions of the world? Motivation: Climate change and its total physical impacts on human life has been one of the key concerns of scientists for decades and it has become an essential political agenda for many world countries in recent years. Studies have identified the physical risks of the climate change as changes in precipitation patterns, shifting deserts and monsoons, sea level rise, more intense and extreme weather, destruction of marine food chain due to ocean acidification as well as changes in ocean circulations. Taking that into consideration, it is needless to argue that such physical risks do...
The Association between Firm Characteristics and Access to Finance in SMEs: Cross Country Evidence from Europe
Aslay, Oguz ; Gok, Ugur (advisor) ; Cahlík, Tomáš (referee)
The Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) carry a significant weight in the European economies with their share in number of enterprises, total employment and value added being very substantial. These firms are the major source of new employment generation and they also actively participate in international trade activities. However, these firms face important challenges in doing business like finding customers, availability of skilled labor force, cost of inputs and access to finance. This thesis investigates the issue of access to finance for SMEs in Europe using a cross-country survey data set. Specifically, the possible association of three firm characteristics, namely age, size and exporter status, with access to finance will be examined using quantitative methods. Moreover, given the rich set of countries, how the country conditions like financial deepening, the sovereign debt crises and investment-saving imbalances affect these associations will be studied in detail. Overall, this thesis is expected to contribute to the relevant literature, by displaying the effects of firm characteristics on access to finance for SMEs and the cross-country differences with important implications for related economic policies, and to provide suggestions which can be taken into account by policymakers as...
Demand for Turkey as Tourist Destination
Fidanboy, Kemal Berk ; Cahlík, Tomáš (advisor) ; Semerák, Vilém (referee)
This master's thesis focuses on main determinants of tourism demand of Turkey. Analysis is made for 95 countries between 2007 and 2016 using panel data gravity model. Variables which are used in the analysis are economic variables (GDP per capita and relative prices), weighted distance, population and political variables which are terror and democracy index differences between tourist origin country and Turkey, internal political problem, which is coup d'état attempt in 2016 and foreign policy problems which are Gaza crisis with Israel and plane crisis with Russia. Key contribution of this thesis is to include political variables in the model, extend the data set and observe the time period which Turkey has the highest number of tourists and experienced sharp decrease afterwards. As for the estimation, three different models which are pooled Ordinary Least Squares, Fixed Effects and Random Effects are used. These models are compared with each other by performing different tests and it is founded out that Fixed Effects model is the most efficient one. For the results, it is founded out that except the political variables; other variables have expected significance and contribution, both positive and negative, to tourism demand of Turkey. Even though the internal and foreign political problems have...
Price Determinants of Flats Purchased for the First Time in Prague
Pelnář, Daniel ; Cahlík, Tomáš (advisor) ; Nevrla, Matěj (referee)
Being able to correctly estimate the true intrinsic value of a flat is important for various economic agents. This paper is concerned with the price determinants of first-time- purchased flats in Prague. It is mostly about the hedonic pricing model and its applications using data from Vivus which is one of the larger flat developers operating in Prague. Ordinary least squares was the estimation method of choice in this study. The main results are as follows. The residual analysis showed no extremely overvalued or undervalued flats based on our chosen models. Moreover, the estimated increase in prices of average sized flats in Uhříněves was 36.76% from 2017 to 2019. This is a much larger magnitude if compared with the period of the financial crisis where an average sized flat in Na Vyhlídce increased in its price by 12.83% from 2007 to 2009. It is interesting to see that even during a recession, the prices of Prague flats were raising.
Debt Relief and Growth: A Study of the HIPC Initiative
Kutman, Jan ; Cahlík, Tomáš (advisor) ; Pleticha, Petr (referee)
Debt relief is a form of development aid that began to gain importance in the last decade of the 20th century. In 1996 the World Bank and the IMF jointly launched the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative, a comprehensive and structured program designed to provide debt relief for eligible low-income countries. The purpose of my thesis is to investigate, whether debt relief for developing countries over the period 1996-2015 affected economic growth in the recipient countries with particular attention being paid to the HIPC countries. I also investigate whether the impact of debt relief on growth varies conditional on institutional quality. I find that the low-income countries on average did not benefit from debt relief. However, I find that debt forgiveness has enhanced the growth rates in the countries in the HIPC initiative. Based on the results of my regression analysis I did not find evidence that the effectivity of debt relief in either group of countries depends on institutional quality.
Distraint in the Czech Republic
Košťál, Daniel ; Cahlík, Tomáš (advisor) ; Malovaná, Simona (referee)
Property distraint is an issue that anyone can face at any point of their life. Despite minor efforts to amend the situation, the Czech Republic continuously sees yearly increases in distraint orders against individuals who default on their debt. This thesis investigates possible meso-level factors that could influence the number of these issued orders. Using data on the 76 state districts plus the capital city of Prague, the overall influence of criminal activity, unemployment and financial literacy is estimated. This is achieved by using the ordinary least squares regression, as well as two other unobserved effects models. The empirical evidence then hints at favorable properties of the random effects model. The results confirm the main hypotheses that crime and unemployment are risk factors for distraint, and that financial literacy helps reduce these risks. Auxiliary data also hints at a certain level of correlation between debt default and immigration, which is up for a further deeper analysis. Keywords Property distraint, crime, unemployment, over-indebtedness, financial literacy Author's email: dkostal@gmail.com Supervisor's email: cahlik@fsv.cuni.cz
Togo in ECOWAS and Slovakia in the EU: Comparison of Economic Development
Mihaldová, Veronika ; Cahlík, Tomáš (advisor) ; Ryska, Pavel (referee)
This bachelor thesis examines the economic development of Economic Community of West African States and the European Union. It analysis and compares these institutions in the first place. Then, it analysis the corresponding monetary union, the West African Economic and Monetary Union and the Economic Monetary Union. On the basis of theoretical background the focus is then put onto the comparison of economic development of Togo and Slovakia, two countries of which one represents ECOWAS and the WAEMU, and, on the contrary, the second one the EU and the EMU. From the empirical perspective, the thesis applies the econometric analysis of panel data consisting of 30 countries that are observed for the period of 10 years, from 2007 to 2016. Standard panel data methods are tested along with the dynamic panel data method and then compared. Consequently, the main aim of the thesis and its empirical part is to apply already developed econometric models, originally intended for different group of countries, on the data to see whether they can be used to explain economic development of ECOWAS and the EU. Keywords Togo, ECOWAS, Slovakia, European Union, comparative economics, economic develop- ment, analysis
Home Ownership vs. Renting: Comparison of Costs in the Czech Republic
Tláskalová, Andrea ; Hejlová, Hana (advisor) ; Cahlík, Tomáš (referee)
This thesis develops a cost-benefit analysis of ownership versus renting and investigates the net present values of these alternatives within three different investment and consumption strategies. In order to investigate interactions among the variables and to perform a more detailed analysis, microdata on real estate purchase offers and real estate rental offers are used. Due to the size of the real estate market and the diversity of property types, we focus our analysis on the real estates located in Prague. The thesis' results indicate that ownership is more profitable than renting under the conditions of only one group out of twelve. However, the thesis presents values of three key parameters of home ownership costs for which ownership would be equally profitable as renting. Finally, we attempt to explain the price-to-rent ratio using various apartment characteristics. The OLS regression method uncovers negative impact of the ground floor variable and the panel building variable on the ratio, resulting in higher relative affordability of buying when compared to renting. Number of rooms variable, on the contrary, shows positive impact on the ratio and an additional room in an apartment results in lower relative affordability of buying when compared to renting.
Comparative Analysis of Indian States
Mačejovský, Alexander ; Cahlík, Tomáš (advisor) ; Irinkov, Pavel (referee)
The crucial role of elementary education for development of individuals and the society can be hardly overrated. Yet in spite of all proclaimed efforts of Indian government focused on achieving universal school enrolment of 6 to 14 years old children, there are still more out-of-school children in India than in any other country in the world. Previous literature dedicated to the problem of elementary education enrolment and retention in India concentrated mainly on the influence of household and individual characteristics on enrolment decisions. The role of school quality received less attention. This thesis aims to bring more light on the effects that supply-side factors have had on enrolment rates in states and union territories of India throughout the 2008/09-2015/16 period. In addition, their impact on progress and retention of students in elementary education is also examined. The findings indicate that investing in building new classrooms or in textbooks incentives has been an effective approach in enhancing the examined outcomes, while factors like small schools or low education of teachers are among problems requiring special attention. Surprisingly, higher number of teachers has no evident positive relation with higher enrolment or retention of students, which might suggest an urgent need for...
