3D as a Justified Means of Shifting the Meaning of Film
Toulová, Eva ; BENDOVÁ, Helena (advisor) ; VALAK, Radim (referee)
In my thesis I deal with theoretical analysis: 3D as a Justified Means of Shifting the Meaning of Film. I deal with 3D movies employing the third dimension as a necessary and essential part of the artistic concept which has a demonstrable significance in shifting the meaning of the work and thus makes the method of 3D filming into a legitimate means of artistic intent. If transferred to the 2D dimension, these films would not "work" to the same effect, their meaning would be changed or even lost, or perhaps they would not be created at all - namely: Pina by Wim Wenders, Heart Beat by Jan Nemec, and Cave of Forgotten Dreams by Werner Herzog.
To heat the silence, there must be heard the noise first
Březina, Jan ; Valak, Radim (advisor) ; Marek, Petr (referee)
In this paper I tried to cover existing body of work of French film director Bruno Dumont. In his five feature films I tried to find common motives to examine the specificity of his work. What are the film tools he uses to address the spectator and what is the purpose. I identified the dominant motives as four philosophical categories: body, territory, awaken one self, guilt.
Dead time in the works of Nuri Bilge Ceylan
Wiński, Tomasz ; Bouda, Marek (advisor) ; Valak, Radim (referee)
In my thesis I was trying to analize Nuri Bilge Ceylan´s feature films in chronological order, focusing on the possibilities and limitations of non-narrative and purely cinematic ways of expression - like the mis-en scené, editing, framing or creative sound editing. I wrote about all the five movies of the famous Turkish director, which were recently awarded with numerous awards in the most important film festivals: "Kasaba" ( "The Small town" ), "Mayis sikintisi" ( "Clouds of May" ), "Uzak" ( "Distant" ), "Iklimler" ( "Climates" ) a "Üç maymun" ( "Three Monkeys" ). In my analysis I focused on strictly formal film sequences - but I also tried to take a closer look at the coexistence and influence of the dead time sequences on the elements of dramatic narrative in these movies.

Landscape as a tool for narrative in modernist films
Kristóf, György ; Valak, Radim (advisor) ; Vojnár, Ivan (referee)
My main interest is a landscape as a dominating element of space, of a film set; therefore I chose it as a topic for this work. The introduction deals with picture in narration in general. As it is known ? the picture is a basic pillar of film language, however in many cases its potentials has not been exploited in all its entity. But historical development of narrative structures has been in a close interaction with construction of picture, which, for its part, creates the film space, so with a time the film space got a chance to reveal itself and fulfill its possibilities. The next part of the text offers a brief overview about development of importance of landscape in film history, however I intentionally stopped and focused my attention on modernism period, which I find the bravest and richest of attempts towards development of film as an art. This period has also made a contribution in creation of landscape in film as aware and meaningful tool of expression. One of the most unique spaces not only in modernism but also throughout whole film history is Tarkovsky?s Zona. Therefore the main focus will be on this particular space. The first part of the following text will give an introduction to Tarkovsky?s specific approach of film picture and its link with orthodox understanding of icon. The second part will contain analysis and attempt to understand the Zona.

The aim of the inquiry is to specify common features, alternatively distinctions, in both content and form of selected films.
A modern tragedy in the movies of Romanian "new wave"
Omerzu, Olmo ; Bouda, Marek (advisor) ; Valak, Radim (referee)
A modern tragedy in the movies of Romanian "new wave" The death of tragedy? The text questions the concept of "death of tragedy" and tries to apply classic rules of tragedy on the movies of Romanian ?new wave?, particularly in the film Death of Mr. Lazarescu by director Cristian Puiu. The base of the thesis follows the idea that despite the changes in theoretical settings (from ancient Greece till today), the basic view of the world hasn´t change so much that it would be impossible for us to go trough tragic experience. The analysis of films focuses on the basic themes and elements associated with the ancient tragedy (such as tragedy and myth, catharsis, tragic hero, tragic conflict ...) and considers their possible existence in today's world which the modern tragedy should have reflect.
Possibility of using music in the film story
Tuka, Josef ; Vojnár, Ivan (advisor) ; Valak, Radim (referee)
If I was in undergraduate theoretical work dealt with the theme functions of color in a feature story, audio post-production at the bachelor movie inspired me to think about the questions posted on the kind of counterpoint: The possibilities of music in a feature story. It is a fact that my bachelor's movie was my first experience of working with film music composer. In FAMU exercises before, I worked more or less just with sound dramatic, I've used music just to forming background, but not as a specific emotional information. On the basis of this my inexperience, I had during interviews with the composer often got into blind spots. How to use music in the movie? At what point in the story? According to what decide to use a specific musical instrument? How to work with music in relation to the main dramatic character? This should be the main topic of theoretical thesis.
Putování a čas. Retrospekce v rukopisu nalezeném v Saragoze.
Mielnik, Tomasz ; Valak, Radim (advisor) ; Marek, Petr (referee)
The Retrospective has several functions in Hass? work which we can be simplified by calling it a challenge with death, journey or an ironic joke. The Retrospective is used the way to show us that the reality is not the only layer of our existence in a present time. The present includes the past. These two layers are connecting and form us as human beings.
