Film festivals in relation to the margins of cinema

In the third part the method is then applied to four selected films from different creative periods of Eduardo Coutinho: Cabra marcado para morrer (1964-1984), Boca de lixo (1992), Edifício Master (2002) and Peões (2004).
Weapons of Mass Equivocation: Contradictory Coordinates of Postwar Anti-Communist Cycle
Mišúr, Martin ; Hanáková, Petra (advisor) ; Bláhová, Jindřiška (referee)
The aim of this master's thesis is to define and analyse the anti-Communist cycle: a group of several dozen feature films, which were produced in the United States since the late forties until the end of the fifties. The thesis adopts a critical approach to the current research on the cycle; it considers that scholars have not taken into account much of the relevant context and have described the cycle only as a reflection of some social phenomena. This project enriches the debate by considering the plurality of differently motivated participants. In addition to shifts in the society as a whole, the emphasis is put on the interests of both the film industry and ones, who expressed their disagreement with the dominant form of anti-Communism, but not with the anti-Communism itself. The anti-Communist cycle is thus presented as a dynamic group of various films in terms of ideas, style or genres; among these films a discreet tension was created. This general hypothesis is tested by three extensive chapters. The first chapter deals with the context and defines the role of all participants. It is divided into two parts: (a) the historical context, (b) the context of the film industry. The second chapter summarizes the long continuity of production of anti-Communist films in the United States; then it...
Sexual Identity as Cinematic Subversion: the Discourse of New Queer Cinema
Kajánková, Lucia ; Hanáková, Petra (advisor) ; Bláhová, Jindřiška (referee)
The thesis proposes the New Queer Cinema chapter of film history as a paradigm of queer film's subversive practices. The theoretically and historically focused first part establishes the term queer, expounds its possible applications to film in the realm of queer film studies and in the third chapter critically introduces the 'new wave' of queer film New Queer Cinema. The analytical part assigns queer and its possible functions as its basis for inquiry. It consists of two parts: the first performs the formal-content analysis of the pivotal film Swoon (1992); the final chapter builds on its conclusions and examines the corpus of New Queer Cinema films along four analytical cuts in order to describe how they produce the queer discourse. The final output of the thesis is an open model of prospective approaches to queer film.
From reverie to nature. Analysis of The Tree of Life imagery
Čertík, Luděk ; Přádná, Stanislava (advisor) ; Bláhová, Jindřiška (referee)
The following bachelor's thesis discusses nature in the films of the renowned American director, screenwriter and producer Terrence Malick. The thesis analyzes Malick's work with regard to the director's own relationship to nature, which makes it fundamentally different from other works with a similar focus. The work is divided into two interrelated parts. The first part is a detailed biographical account of Malick's life with special emphasis on the events and works that are significantly connected with the main theme of the thesis. The second part deals with the relationship of Malick's characters to nature and at the same time gives a comprehensive picture of how Malick conceptualize the nature itself.
Remediation of woman - comparison of movie and videogame.
Nový, Luděk ; Hanáková, Petra (advisor) ; Bláhová, Jindřiška (referee)
This paper attempts to prove how the displaying of female characters in video game can remediate film's way of their representation. My starting point for comparison is the theory of Laura Mulvey. The displaying itself and the influence of narrative on representation of female charactes were analyzed from the perspective of feminist analysis. The paper tries to point out the ways and pleasures that govern the display of female characters and how they are transformed in the transition between different media. It was successfully proven that video games not only follow the practices of the film medium, but they also further develop them in their own way. Remediation reveals different cultural dynamics in the development of displaying female heroines in film and video games. It also proves that phallocentric paradigm is still prevailing. A tough job for Donald Duck: Hollywood, Czechoslovakia, and selling films behind the Iron Curtain, 1944-1951
Bláhová, Jindřiška ; Přádná, Stanislava (advisor)
Combining analyses of primary documents housed at American, Russian and Czech archives, and employing industrial analysis, market analysis, and analytical tools developed in reception studies, this thesis examines Hollywood's post-war operations in Eastern Europe, the strategies that were employed to advance them, and the responses of the indigenous film industries of Eastern Europe to them. While scholars examining Hollywood's post-war international activities have focused on western European markets, arguing that they were of supreme importance to Hollywood, this thesis shows that Eastern Europe was also central to Hollywood's post-war economic agenda. The major Hollywood studios, I argue, were, as early as 1944, drawing up highly ambitious plans to become the dominant player on Eastern European markets, including the Soviet market, and were working to prevent the Soviet film industry from expanding into Western Europe. Sitting at the border of East and West, the small country of Czechoslovakia played a key role in what this thesis calls Hollywood's Soviet Sphere Project. By revealing the extent to which expansion into Eastern Europe was central to Hollywood's short-, medium- and long-term economic objectives, this thesis offers new insight into Hollywood's domestic and international conduct during the...
