Antonymous adjectives in children's and adult literature
Najberková, Tereza ; Čermáková, Anna (advisor) ; Čermák, Jan (referee)
The topic of this thesis are adjectival antonyms in child-directed fiction. The primary aim of the thesis is to compare the usage of antonyms in adult fiction and child-directed fiction on the basis of a contextual co-occurrence of antonyms. The two areas of focus are the discourse functions of antonymy and the canonicity of antonyms. The thesis presents an analysis of antonyms identified in the context of 51 most frequent adjectives in a corpus of fiction written for children. The thesis is structured into three major parts. The first part provides a theoretical framework which summarizes the research of the discourse functions of antonymy and reviews the methods of measuring antonym canonicity. The second, methodological part, explains the methodology and describes the data used for the purposes of this study. The selection of data relies mostly on manual classification of the concordance lines. The third, analytical part, analyses and classifies the antonyms found in the corpus of child-directed fiction and compares them with selective samples extracted from adult fiction. A comparison of the most frequent adjectives in both corpora is also provided. Keywords: antonymy, discourse functions, antonym canonicity, ancillary antonymy, coordinated antonymy
Media representation of the Greek debt crisis: a corpus-assisted discourse analysis of the "Guardian" online news
Pavlíčková, Tereza ; Čermáková, Anna (advisor) ; Malá, Markéta (referee)
The thesis deals with discourse surrounding the topic of the Greek debt crisis (GDC) in the online version of the British daily newspaper the Guardian (www.theguardian.com). The study builds on a bilateral division of the EU public discourse on the economic crisis, distinguishing between two opposing perspectives: "the Northern diagnosis" (DeGrauwe 2011: 5) prevailing in Germany and other creditor states, and 'the Southern opinion' on the situation held mainly by the debtor countries. The thesis examines the position of the Guardian in relation to this bilateral discourse framework. The Guardian represents a liberal, socially aware and traditionally EU-supportive newspaper that is published in a country which counts among the Europe's leading economic and political powers, a country that is also characterized by strong Eurosceptic tendencies. These aspects form a complex background with regard to the EEC/GDC discourse framework. There are factors supporting both "the Northern diagnosis" of the GDC and those suggesting inclination to 'the Southern opinion'. The analysis, dealing with a self-collected corpus (altogether 349 texts, 277 973 words) consisting of the Guardian online news on the GDC is situated - both theoretically and methodologically - in the field of Corpus- assisted discourse studies...
Phytoplankton of drinking water reservoirs in the Jizera Mountains, Czech Republic, in relation to treatability of water
Čermáková, Anna ; Hořická, Zuzana (advisor) ; Procházková, Lenka (referee)
The area of the Jizera Mountains (northern Bohemia) was significantly affected by acid atmospheric deposition in the second half of the 20th century. This mountain area has a very sensitive geology and is characterized by the predominance of spruce stands, naturally acidic shallow soils of podzolic type, large areas of peat bogs in the upper plateau, a rough climate, and a very high annual rainfall. The frequent heavy rains and a low infiltration capacity of soils brought about floods in the past, very dangerous for the populated foothills. , so in the early 20th century For that reason, a plan was proposed to construct a system of reservoirs for a flood protection of the area. In the 1970s, the need for new sources of drinking water increased in the area. The Souš retention and recreation reservoir was rebuilt to a drinking water reservoir in 1974, and a new drinking water reservoir Josefův Důl was bulit in 1982. Both the water bodies have had a dystrophic character since the beginning, and the Souš reservoir suffers from naturally high concentrations of aluminum. Due to the anthropogenic acidification, the reservoirs were fishless until brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis) were successfully (re)introduced in the 1990s, and the diversity and numbers of the zooplankton were very low. The...

Metabolism of Saccharides - production of Didactic Materials for High School Education
Čermáková, Anna ; Teplá, Milada (advisor) ; Klímová, Helena (referee)
My rigorous thesis focuses on creating educational materials for High School Education, namely materials for teaching about metabolism of saccharides. This thesis is based on a research of international multimedia textbooks and Internet links. Results of this thesis are two educational materials - an educational program and a worksheet. Both of these materials were created to make teaching of biochemistry more effective, respectively teaching of the chapter about metabolism of saccharides in High School Education. The Worksheet composes of 21 tasks, which are mainly used for practicing of the discussed curriculum. The Educational Program is of a multimedia character and is created in Adobe Flash 8. This Educational Program is composed of a total of 12 animations (Starting Animation, Digestion, Glycolysis, Gluconeogenesis, Lactate and Alanine Cycle, Degradation of Pyruvate, Citric Acid Cycle, Interesting Facts, Test 1, Test 2, Didactic Game "Pexeso" ("Memory Game"), and About the Program). To make the use of this material easier for teachers a manual was created. The Educational Program is a part of the rigorous thesis and it is placed on a separate CD-R media.
Valency frames of Czech nouns: corpus-driven study
Čermáková, Anna ; Petkevič, Vladimír (advisor) ; Panevová, Jarmila (referee) ; Kopřivová, Marie (referee)
This thesis aims at providing a lexicological framework for systematic description of valency of Czech nouns. Valency is seen here as a lexicological property of words. Valency is an abstract relation with concrete textual realizations and the term "valency" is used here for both: the abstract notion and the concrete valency exponents and realisations. The analysis is corpus-driven and as such it is based on a rather loose notion of valency, devoid of any pre-conceived ideas, concentrating on typical structural patterns of occurrence on the right side of the noun under investigation. For the analysis the corpus SYN2000, a part of the Czech National Corpus has been used. The analysis is based on random selections of concordance lines of randomly chosen 99 nouns from the middle frequency range. In some cases, where the data proved insufficient, we have carried out additional specialized corpus queries. For high frequency nouns we assume highly differentiated valency profiles; to confirm this hypothesis we have carried out additional brief analysis of several high frequency nouns. The most frequent valency of Czech nouns is genitive complementation, which we find as occurring with more than 90% of the analysed nouns. For some of the nouns, the genitive valency is a very dominant valency pattern (in some cases...
Finnish Epistemic Modals in Contrastive Perspective
Janoušková, Kateřina ; Fárová, Lenka (advisor) ; Čermáková, Anna (referee)
This corpus based diploma thesis takes stock of Finnish epistemic modal verbs voida, saattaa, taitaa and mahtaa and surveys their translational counterparts as they can be found in the parallel corpus InterCorp. The aim of the thesis is to find out what tendencies there can be found in the translation of the modals in question. In the theoretical part, there is, firstly, a description of both modality and modal verbs in Finnish and Czech, secondly, of the differences between the approaches to modality in both languages and, thirdly, of the features of translated language. In the analytical part, the translations are sorted out into categories based on the particular modal specifiers. The description of the different modal specifier categories follows.

Čermáková, Anna ; Kára, Jan (advisor)
Theme of her thesis dealing with lung cancer women I have chosen not only because it belongs to the Czech Republic countries with high incidence and mortality for lung cancer, but also personal interest in this issue. Lung cancer is by far the most common malignant us cancer in men. For women, the incidence of this tumor is about four times lower than in men, but worrying is the fact that the curve for women incidence has increased steadily. Although a direct link has been demonstrated a number of risk factors, especially smoking, another question arises about the influence of other substances, especially in women, where the representation ofdifferent histological different types of lung tumors. Therefore, there are hypotheses whether women have no share in the development of lung cancer, especially adenocarcinoma, hormonal influences. That was the impetus for writing this work, which I tried to find association between the occurrence ofadenocarcinoma in women and hormonal contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy and length of time between menarche and menopause.

Čermáková, Anna ; Sochor, Jan (referee) ; Františák, Luboš (advisor)
This bachelor thesis deals with an architectural and urban design of a possible build-up development of a vacant lot at the corner of the streets Stará and Bratislavská in the town district Brno-střed. The project includes the creation of street lines, a public space and a high-rise point at the corner of the streets. Thanks to the variation in height and the facade propositions, the mass of the building is distributed into several parts. This way the building object is well adjusted to the scale factor of the neighbouring buildings. The main function of the object is housing, and the additional functions include a commercial property, a café and a dance studio.
