JUDr Jiří Branžovský. A political portrait of a modern Czech nationalist
Beroun, Zdeněk ; Šebek, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Čechurová, Jana (referee) ; Rataj, Jan (referee)
The dissertation submitted aims at forming a political portrait of JUDr Jiří Branžovský (1898-1955), an important representative of the extreme right-wing political scene during the so called First Czechoslovak Republic. We can trace back his public activities already from the outset of 1920s when he engaged in the students' academic fellowships. He belonged to the founders of the nationalist club of Reds- and-Whites. What inscribed him to the historical awareness, was his prominent membership of The National Fascists' Community. He operated as their lawyer in the fellow position of their president, Radola Gajda. He sat on the highest Party bodies, he participated in the editorial board of the Fascist press, as well. Standing as a candidate of The National Fascists' Community, he was elected a member of the National Parliament, in 1935. Side by side with his mandate performance, there were protracted quarrels with the Party leaders, though. During the Nazi occupation, he enter into contact with the resistance movement. In April 1943, he was arrested by Gestapo and imprisoned till the end of War; at first in the Little Fortress Terezín, later in the Buchenwald and Dachau concentration camps. By the liberation, he returned to his civil profession, soon after the February 1948 he fell into disgrace. He...
"The interim period in the episcopal service of Štěpán Trochta in the years 1950-1968: l'm coming back to you".
Koubová, Veronika ; Čechurová, Jana (advisor) ; Stehlík, Michal (referee)
(anglicky) This thesis elaborates on the work of Bishop, and later Cardinal, Štěpán Trochta in the years 1950-1968. It sheds more light on his pro-regime actions in the early 1950s and at the same time on his anti-state activities that he "committed" in parallel, and for which he was eventually sentenced to 25 years in prison. Following that, the research is focused on the period which Trochta spent in communist prisons, and the efforts of the state power to force him into collaboration with the regime. The next part of this work analyses the period of his freedom, during which he was at first a manual worker in Prague and later a pensioner in charity homes in Tábor and Radvanov. The research ends with his return to the diocese in 1968. The aim of this thesis is to realistically depict the Bishop's personality and his actions. In this respect, it strives to correct the hagiographically based works of Catholic biographers who have so far rather avoided this period (especially the 1960s). Furthermore, this thesis aims to provide a more detailed treatment of the events in the Bishop's life that have not as yet enjoyed much attention in Czech historiography.
The second decennium of the Munich Betrayal. Reflection of the year 1938 in Czechoslovakia 1948-1958 - formulation and development.
Nožička, Josef ; Čechurová, Jana (advisor) ; Mücke, Pavel (referee) ; Němeček, Jan (referee)
The dissertation explores the creation of a historical portrayal of the 1938 events in Czechoslovakia and the transformations of this portrayal in 1948-1958. In particular, it analyses the mechanism of its creation, its fundamental pillars, the most characteristic interpretation devices, motifs, and patterns, their changes and shifts in their priority; the materials examined include, primarily, specialist historiography publications and opinion journalism on political issues, and in selected cases also films, poetry, and fiction. Furthermore, the dissertation highlights the links between these transformations and the propaganda campaigns of the Cold War - the 'war of documents' and the campaign against bourgeois falsifiers of history. It searches for parallels between the Soviet and Czechoslovak historiography of this period, focusing on their mutual ties in their narrative about the Munich events of 1938 as well as on the gradual weakening of these ties in the mid 1950s.
The Expulsion of Germans from Přebuz and the Transformation of the Town in the Postwar Period
Valentová, Hana ; Čechurová, Jana (advisor) ; Andrš, Pavel (referee)
To this day, the expulsion of Germans from Czechoslovakia after the Second World War can be counted among controversies in the history of Central Europe. Until 1989, this topic was a grey zone in our historiography. Naturally it was influenced by the regime at that time, whose collapse resulted in a research boom. At the same time, questions about the adequacy of the deportations arose. To this day, answers to these questions remain quite different. It often depends on where the response comes from. It is important to realize that the deportations greatly affected the lives of ordinary people. This thesis deals with the expulsion of Germans from Přebuz and the subsequent development of the town in the postwar period. In order to give a complete picture of the state of affairs in Přebuz before the deportations, one part will also be dedicated to the historical development and the population of the town since its founding until the end of the Second World War. The thesis deals with the German population in the town in the period between 1945 and 1989, which was not viewed sfavourably at that time. The consequences of the expulsion of Germans on the town itself, namely its depopulation and attempts at populating it again, are also taken into consideration. Attention will also be paid to the so called...
Changes of Terezín in the Time of the first half of the 20th century
Kumpfová, Kristýna ; Čechurová, Jana (advisor) ; Šedivý, Ivan (referee)
Terezín is a special type of city, the origin of which was not determined by economic but by military reasons. It was founded in the 18th century as a fortress town and became the seat of a military garrison (which, except for the Second World War, resided here until the 1990s). Terezín was located in a mixed German-Czech area and, after the secession of the Sudetenland, found itself on the very border with the Third Reich. The construction of the city at the end of the 18th century, including its significance and later the history of the Jewish ghetto, is the subject of many historical works. But the period of the end of the monarchy and the first republic in Terezín is still waiting for greater historical research. The starting point of my work is the gradual transformation of the city during the 19th and the first half of the 20th century, depending on how the strategic importance of the city as a military fortress changed. Shortly after its completion, Terezín began to become morally and technically obsolete. The rapid development of new weapons systems, and especially the development of war techniques, when numerous units with rear security could move by rail, and armies became much more mobile, all this determined the further development of the city. The stationary fortress could be bypassed...

Folda, Marek ; Čechurová, Jana (advisor) ; Šedivý, Ivan (referee)
The Czechoslovakian presidential election in 1927 and its reception in the press Abstract: The topic of the bachelor's thesis is the third presidential election of the Czechoslovak Republic in May 1927, focusing on its reflextion in the press. President Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, who has already been elected twice, decided for a third candidacy and his only opponent eventually became a member of Communist Party Václav Šturc. Masaryk originally wanted to push for the election of Foreign Minister Edvard Beneš, who, however, did not have sufficient support from the political scene. The president has already announced that he does not intend to go to a possible second round a has left the negotiations on the election entirely in the hands of Prime Minister Antonín Švehla. Before the presidential election, a debate broke out in the press between newspapers supporting Masaryk and those who opposed it. This thesis aims to capture and describe this press dispute.
