Chlum, Michael ; Kloudová, Věra (advisor) ; Winter, Astrid (referee)
The theoretical-empirical thesis focuses on the translation of cultural specificity, using the work of the German writer Thomas Brussig. The primary source chosen is the author's novel Am kürzeren Ende der Sonnenallee, set in the GDR, as well as its Czech translation, Na kratším konci ulice, by translator Jana Zoubková. Incorporating translatological, socio-cultural, historical, linguistic and literary aspects, the theoretical section summarizes the relevant knowledge about cultural specificity and its translation, life in the GDR, socialist Czechoslovakia, as well as the author himself and his work. The main subject of the empirical part, which includes a literary analysis of the novel, is a translatological analysis, the focus of which is the translation of culture-specific items. The aim of the thesis is, among other things, to find out how cultural and historical specificity are translated between two cultures with a similar past. The quantitative change of target text volume compared with source text volume in German-Czech translations
Kučerová, Klára ; Svoboda, Tomáš (advisor) ; Winter, Astrid (referee)
This diploma thesis focuses on the investigation of the quantitative change of target text volume compared with source text volume in German-Czech translations. The aim of this thesis is to empirically test the hypothesis that when translating into German the target text volume increases and when translating into Czech the target text volume decreases. The theoretical part of this thesis first summarizes the findings concerning the phenomena that may influence the target text volume. These are translation universals, especially explicitation, as well as translation strategies. The next part of the thesis deals with the methods used in the empirical research. This part describes the source texts and explains the procedure used for calculating the coefficients of change of target text volume. In the empirical part, the source and target texts provided by the translation agency are described. The main part of this chapter consists of an analysis of the coefficients of change of target text volume in terms of the functional style of the source texts, the subject area of the source texts and the individual translators. The last part of this chapter focuses on a questionnaire survey among translation agencies. Its aim is to find out how the price of translation is calculated and what the respondents'...
The Tschechische Bibliothek translation project as part of translation history
Zbořilová, Lenka ; Svoboda, Tomáš (advisor) ; Winter, Astrid (referee)
This thesis deals with the Tschechische Bibliothek project in the context of sociology and the history of translation. Tschechische Bibliothek is a German-language library of Czech literature comprising 33 books published between 1999 and 2007 by the publishing house Deutsche Verlags-Anstalt as a project of the Robert Bosh Foundation (Robert Bosch Stiftung). The aim of this thesis is to map the process of the library's creation from the project's inception, selection of works and publishing policy in the publishing house DVA through the work with the texts (translations, editing, proofreading, paratexts), their subsequent editing (graphic design, typesetting, printing) and dealing with the finished books (promotion, funding) to the reception of the library in both the German-speaking and Czech environments. In pursuing this aim, this thesis focuses above all on the fields of sociology of translation (the influence of the individual participants on the process of creating the library) and the history of translation (the influence of contemporary translation norms and conventions on the work of translators and editors). The research method used is oral history, as well as questionnaire survey and research. The theoretical bases of the thesis are mainly manipulation theory (A. Lefevere) and praxeology...

Kliuieva, Valeriia ; Winter, Astrid (advisor) ; Heinz, Christof (referee)
Kliuieva The thesis consists of the translation and the comment about it. The translated text includes different parts of the websites of three museums connected by a foundation. The goal of this thesis is to localize this text for German speaking readers who might be potential visitors of the museums. The comment to the translation is concerned with the text analysis, translation problems and their solution. The problems emerging during the translation process are connected to the differences between German and Czech languages, and that is why their analysis and solutions are explained. Shifts of different kinds emerged during the process, to which the last part of the paper is dedicated.
