Anam, Choirul ; Plaček, Michal (advisor) ; Nemec, Juraj (referee) ; Vaceková, Gabriela (referee)
Not only does decentralization transfer of powers and functions from central government to local governments, but also about how the people can stimulate rural development to gradually improve their welfare. In fact, not all countries that implement decentralization get the same results in terms of their impact on economic growth and poverty alleviation. This research applies an exploratory approach that is enhanced by structured interviews and field research, as well as an empirical approach that is strengthened by stepwise regression. The aim of this research is to see the interconnection between village funds policies and poverty alleviation in Indonesia. The results show that per capita village funds can reduce poverty even though it may differ between provinces. However, proportional of village funds has the opposite impact if they are overly dependent on the central government transfers. In addition, some of the research findings appear to contradict the theory due to the influence of the unique character and culture of Indonesian people. The village funds program in Indonesia has become a unique and challenging issue for researchers. Therefore, further research can be done by concentrating on the other impacts of village funds in Indonesia than poverty which is essential to enrich the...

Žižková, Tereza ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Plechanovová, Běla (referee)
This thesis focuses on the phenomenon of remittances (money or products sent by migrants to their countries of origin) and their relation to current development discourse. The volumes of remittances are still growing and this revenue has become especially significant for developing countries. This thesis, therefore, does not only focus on the economic contribution of remittances but analyses them in a broader context. Its aim is to find whether and how do remittances contribute to the overall development of poor countries. This thesis offers a historical overview of developmental discourse and followed by specification of four key concepts of current development (empowerment, ownership, good governance and sustainable development), whereby this thesis constitutes a framework for further analysis. Remittances are substantially connected to the concepts of empowerment and ownership. They enable the recipients to meet their needs more freely and decide how to invest their money. From the point of views of good government concept, it is important, that remittances can help to put more pressure on the democratization of developing countries. Fulfilment of these concepts, as well as the stability of remittances, implies, that this revenue supports sustainable development in poor countries. This thesis is...

The role of micro finance Institutions in poverty reduction in the central region of Ghana
Cudjoe, Bismark
The overall objective of this study is to examine the contribution of micro-finance institutions to poverty reduction in the Kasoa district of the Central Region of Ghana. In an attempt to achieve the objective of the study, data and hypotheses were drawn from First Capital Plus Microfinance Limited which has been operating in the Kasoa Municipality since 2009. The practical part contains primary statistical data through survey research, which consists of a combination of structured questionnaires, interviews, focus group, and participatory methods to collect qualitative data from program beneficiaries and MFI's institutions. Wellbeing variables such as women empowerment, household assets , savings mobilising, household income, start-up capital and business development were used as benchmark variables to investigate the contribution of microfinance institutions to poverty reduction in the Kasoa district area. The study also made use of secondary data to reinforce theoretical arguments on micro-finance and poverty reduction. The results emanated from the administered questionnaires, interviews and participatory approach reveals a favourable relationship between micro-finance and the benchmark variables as a sizeable number of the program beneficiaries attested to a certain level of improvement in their living conditions upon joining the micro-finance program. However, in as much as the positive effects the study also witnesses some challenges inhibiting the growth of micro-finance institutions in the area such as institutional challenges, dishonest staff and beneficiaries, interest rate, markets and infrastructure linkages which, if it is well addressed by policy makers, micro-finance will contribute meaningfully in the fight to reduce global poverty not only in Ghana but also many less developed countries (LDCs).
