Country-level Electoral coalitions in the Czech Republic
Snížek, Jan ; Stauber, Jakub (advisor) ; Brunclík, Miloš (referee)
The issue of coalitions is a traditional political science topic closely related to electoral systems, party systems and party theory. In the Czech and foreign literature, however, political scientists mostly deal only with coalitions that emerge after elections. That is why I have chosen for my diplo-m thesis the research of pre-election coalitions. In my thesis I conduct research on electoral coalitions that ran for the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic or the Czech National Council. I have chosen this topic also because in the last parliamentary elections in 2021 two electoral coalitions successfully ran for election and then formed a joint government. In this thesis, I deal with the Christian Democratic Union (KDU), ODS and KDS coalitions, the Left Bloc coalition, the Liberal Social Union, the Four Coalitions, SPOLU and the coalition of the Pirates and the Mayors. I have researched all these electoral coalitions and analysed their functioning, behaviour, ideological interconnectedness and post-election behaviour and action on the political scene. For this thesis I used academic literature, newspaper articles from the time of the coalitions' functioning, parliamentary press, proceedings in the Chamber of Deputies and Internet sources in the form of news about political events. I also...
Czech modern conservatism in the light of the SPOLU (Together) coalition
Rumiantceva, Iuliia ; Perottino, Michel (advisor) ; Charvát, Jan (referee)
This diploma thesis examines contemporary Czech conservatism in the context of the SPOLU coalition, which currently consists of three political parties (ODS, TOP 09 and KDU-ČSL). The main goal of the work is to analyze different approaches to conservatism within the coalition. The thesis consists of a theoretical and analytical part, focused on the development of conservatism as an ideology and individual party families, as well as on the current political situation in Europe and the conservative faction of the EU. This work first deals with the concept of conservatism, its origin, and the definition of the concept. The analytical part of the work focuses on the analysis of the conservatism of the parties of the SPOLU coalition, including their attitude to traditional family values, national identity and culture, social and economic policy and other aspects that are fundamental to conservatism. Subsequently, the work deals with the ideological position of individual political parties and then performs their analysis. Based on the analysis, it is defined whether the parties are truly conservative. The work will also explore whether the coalition parties could merge to form a new political party. The research questions are whether the SPOLU coalition can be considered conservative and whether the...
The comparison of political parties OĽaNO and PS/Spolu and their participation in the Slovak elections 2020
Švaňa, Lukáš ; Mlejnek, Josef (advisor) ; Guasti, Petra (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the comparison of the OĽaNO party and the coalition of the PS/Spolu. The comparison is done with regard to their origin, development, organizational structure, ideology, program, electorate, and their election campaigns in the 2020 elections to the National Council of the Slovak Republic. The aim of the thesis is to determine similarities and differences, to compare their approaches to the election campaign on the basis of two case studies of the examined political entities. The PS/Spolu, was highly favoured by voters at the beginning of the campaign. On the other hand, the OĽaNO was almost unheard of at the beginning of the campaign. However, the election turned out in a way that the OĽaNO surprisingly became the winner of the election 2020, while the percentage gain of the PS/Spolu was insufficient for parliamentary membership. From an organizational point of view, the parties are very different. In terms of ideology, they find several similarities, but there are more differences between them. This thesis also highlights the strengths and weaknesses of campaigns of both political entities. An important role in this campaign was played in the end of the campaign, when the OĽaNO offered the agenda wanted by voters, while the PS/Spolu has concentrated its forces elsewhere.
