Psychosocial Support for Healthcare Workers and the Latest Development in this Field
FRANCŮ, Alena
This bachelor's thesis focuses on the psychosocial stress experienced by healthcare professionals, with the aim of identifying the types of psychosocial support utilized or potentially sought by these professionals. The objective of the thesis is to describe and assess the offer of psychosocial support in the South Bohemian Region, while also delineating its recent development. In the theoretical part, we identify and describe forms of psychosocial stress experienced by healthcare professionals in their practice. We also focus on the mental hygiene practices adopted by healthcare professionals and the spectrum of psychosocial support used by healthcare professionals in the Czech Republic. Additionally, we provide an overview of recent advancements in this area. The empirical segment of the thesis is dedicated to qualitative research. Semi- structured interviews consisting of 23 predefined inquiries were used for data collection. These inquiries encompass basic information about the respondents, description of psychosocial stress experienced by healthcare professionals, and evaluations of the provision and development of psychosocial support. Supplementary questions were asked when necessary to facilitate a comprehensive understanding of the respondents' perspectives. The sample comprises nine healthcare professionals - two paramedics, two paediatric nurses, three general nurses (university or higher vocational school graduates) and two nurse practitioners (nurses with a secondary level of education). The interviews were then analysed using a paper-and-pencil approach, employing the text colouring method. The research findings are divided into several categories and subcategories. They confirm that almost all the respondents experience excessive stress in their healthcare profession. In their responses, the respondents reported burnout syndrome, workplace bullying, excessive stress, and conflicts within the team. Furthermore, the research findings on stress management, encompassing mental hygiene practices and psychosocial support, underscore that each healthcare professional preferers different forms of psychosocial support. Regarding the accessibility of psychosocial support within and beyond their workplace environments, respondents showed limited awareness of available options. Opinions regarding the evolution of psychosocial support within the Czech Republic were diverse, with some noting improvements consequent to the establishment of the Psychosocial Intervention Service System, while others did not. Nonetheless, all respondents agreed on the significance of this topic and suggested that it should be given more attention. The findings of this thesis should contribute to raising awareness regarding the possibilities of using psychosocial support by healthcare professionals.

The diploma thesis focused on the question of what impact the COVID-19 disease pandemic had on healthcare workers. The theoretical part compares the available literature and provides the necessary information about the causative agent of this viral disease. Furthermore, stress, its causes, risk factors, manifestations and methods of its management are described. The biggest space here is devoted to the burnout syndrome. The aim of the research part was to find out to what extent burnout syndrome occurs in health workers and what factors influence it. The research was carried out in selected departments in the Hospital České Budějovice, a.s., specifically in the Internal Medicine Department, Anesthesiology-resuscitation Department, Emergency Department, Infectious Diseases Department and Department of Hospital Hygiene and Epidemiology. The necessary data were obtained in the form of quantitative research, through the standardized questionnaire "Maslach Burnout Inventory." These results were evaluated and statistically verified in order to confirm or refute the hypotheses. As a result, well over 50 % of healthcare workers experienced worsening symptoms of burnout during the pandemic. The connection between a certain factor and the presence of burnout syndrome was statistically proven only for the factor of village size, where people from villages with a population of up to 3,000 showed a lower rate of burnout than people from villages with a higher number of inhabitants.
