One hundred years of Švejk: tranformation of the critical reception of Jaroslav Hašek's novel

This thesis deals with one century of Czech critical reflection on Jaroslav Hašek's novel The Good Soldier Švejk, i.e. the period from the publication of the first volume in 1921 to 2021. Using reviews in the press, literary critical polemics, selected literary and scientific studies and relevant articles we follow the transformation of the critical discourse about the mentioned novel. The mutual coherence of the viewed sources is ensured by the emphasis on intratextuality, the overview character of the work is complemented by references to other works. This work then not only collects individual texts in the form of bibliographic records and recapitulations of key theses, but also places them in a cultural, historical or social context using interpretive blocks. Using interpretations, we create a narrative culminating in the conclusion when we report on the evolution of the work's critical reception. After its publication, the book is accepted by a wide readership, but literary criticism ignores it with only few exceptions. The work saw rehabilitation in the second half of the 20s of the 20th century thanks to the critical polemics of the time. The Life and the Early Works of Josef Mach

The Abstract The Bachelor work is based on the interpretation of life, early work and import of writer Josef Mach. According to these criteriors the work is devided to three thematical spheres. The first part represents the Mach's biography, which gets out of original information from his work, from his correspondence and from the documents of instituitons, which his life was connected with. The second part of the work analyses Mach's early two poem digests from the formal point of view and mainly from the semantical point of view. The last part of the work takes aim at representative secondary literature about Josef Mach and at development of publication and adapting of his work. The aim of this work is first effort of completing of information about this czech poet, who influenced home literature and literature abroad, and second to give the elementary thematical view of his early work.

Jaroslav Hašek - author of short stories, journalist and politics

The diploma thesis analyzes and compares three life and social roles of one of the most well-known writers of Czech literature, Jaroslav Hasek. Specifically, it is his role as a storyteller, a journalist and a politician. My work is focused on the analysis of the blend and differences between these roles pertaining to the development and context of both the time period and Hasek. The analysis is divided into several parts and it tries to view Hasek from different points of view. Specifically, it deals with the author's historical genesis, then with the narratological analysis of short stories and finally the content analysis associated with the reference to Jaroslav Hasek's language resources.

Reception of Czech literature in Spain considering the mediating role of German

The objective of the present doctoral thesis is to describe the reception of Czech literature in Spain between 1900 and 2015 with a special emphasis on German as a mediating language for translation between Czech and Spanish, placing Czech research of this phenomenon into a broad international context of investigating the role of languages and cultures in multilingual communities. The thesis further explores issues partially covered by previous research (Uličný 2005, Špirk 2011, 2014, Cuenca 2013). The theoretical part first provides a short historical context of both countries, commenting on their bilateral relations during the 20th century, analysing the publishing sector and describing the official censorship. It then provides a detailed investigation of indirect translations and introduces diverse methods in which they can be explored, highlighting the importance of paratextual material, that is paratexts (Genette 1982, 1987) and metatexts (Popovič 1975, 1983), and the influence of censorship and dominant ideology (Abellán 1980, 1982, 1987; Neuschäfer 1994). Methodologically, the present work relies on Czech and Slovak translation studies (Levý, Popovič) and the Spanish TRACE project (Rabadán, Merino). The monographic thesis mainly solves poetry and prose of Josef Mach, the Czech writer, journalist and clerk. It watches literary progress of his poetics according to the era context, influenc of places, historical and social events and inspirations of other artists who surrounded him. The work look into the texts and lyrics by a diachronic and synchronic way. The section about his original works is followed by a chapter about translations of several novels, because he acted even on this literary field. Then the general outline of the reception of Mach's personality and works since the time of his life until today. The whole thesis is introduced by Mach's biography to which it returns in many topics because his works have an empiric character and it is closely connected to the life. The object of the thesis is to sum information about all these topics and give it as a base for future expert research.

The reception of literary parallel: The work of J. Hašek and F. Kafka

The topic of my Bachelor´s thesis is to search a comparative parallel Kafka - Hašek in literature-scientific texts, in which this analogy is under discussion. I concentrate on texts from the beginning of 60´s up to present days. At the same time I deal with the question whether there has been a change in the interpretation of this parallel in the historical context. Furthermore, the thesis concentrates on the main comparative turning points upon which the mentioned parallel is built. On specific extracts from the works by Franz Kafka and Jaroslav Hašek I show the presence of comparative features and their use.
