Addressing structural inequality through education access
Davey, Elizabeth ; Angelovská, Olga (advisor) ; Ndiaye, Sokhna Adele Rosalie (referee)
Elizabeth Davey Public and Social Policy Master's Thesis Abstract Education has long been perceived to be the key to positive social mobility, but mounting evidence has shown that for many low-income students this may be more of a myth than reality. The Achievement Gap between students of different socio-economic and racial groups remains persistently difficult to eliminate despite decades of efforts geared at school reforms. Recognizing the importance of developing more equitable funding allocation for public education institutions, as well as the general consensus that such a policy is an essential step toward increasing equity in the education system, this paper looks at addressing the problem through a different lens. This thesis develops an index of how cross generational relationships and circumstances play into a child's academic access, and as a result, their academic outcomes. Using this index, this thesis adds to the body of knowledge on the topic and a new perspective to the discourse surrounding equity in education, and educational outcomes by considering how Two-Generation interventions can address these intersections. To complete the triangulation, interviews, and observations with leadership staff, program social workers, and participants of a successful Two- Gen program are used to address...

The proportionality of punishment to the wealth of an offender
Drápal, Jakub ; Ondřejek, Pavel (referee)
The proportionality of punishment to the wealth of an offender Abstract This thesis focuses on a contentious issue: Should a fine be related to the wealth of an offender? The first chapter presents various philosophical answers to this question, with most of the attention being directed to the division of fines to regulatory and penal by O'Malley. The contribution of law and economics and other theories is emphasized as well. The second chapter considers the jurisprudence of the Constitutional, Supreme Administrative and Supreme Court of the Czech Republic in relation to the principle of prohibition of fine's liquidation effect on the offender. Based on this analysis, a simplified cheatsheet is presented for government officials to better identify when a fine might have liquidation effect. Fine in the sphere of criminal law is the subject of third chapter. After discussing the theoretical foundations of day-fine concept, its application at two Czech district courts is analyzed. The results suggest that the day-fine concept exists only on paper. To find out why the concept does not work, I have analyzed all relevant legislation of European states relating to the day-fine concept. Based on this comparative analysis I suggest what should be done to improve current legislation in the Czech Republic. My last...
Younger school aged children and their moral judgement
Havelková, Lucie ; Klusák, Miroslav (advisor) ; Hrabec, Ondřej (referee)
As the title indicates, our thesis focuses on the moral judgment of children. In analogy to the diploma thesis of Eliška Kuruczová, we as well used situations of social games and stories about lying and unfair authority. The main source for our thesis was Jean Piaget's The moral judgment of the child, published published in 1932, in which Piaget presented the results of his interviews with children. In his research, Piaget stated that moral judgment within dimension of game rules is more complex and requires higher level of orientation in moral issues. But Piaget considers games in general as a competition because of social organization and that's a meeting point where Eliška Kuruczová's bachelor thesis follows on. This thesis examines how different social organization of games influences moral orientation in the issue of games. Thanks to this thesis, which our thesis is based on, we could focus on other questions in Piaget's research that remained unanswered, eg. whether there is a link between the level of orientation in social games and the age of children, or what type of game social organization is the most / least difficult for children's orientation. For triangulation of our research on moral judgment development, we used stories about lying and unfair authority in our interviews. We tried...

Equal status and equal opportunities for individuals caring for children in labour relations in the Czech Republic and selected European countries
Midlochová, Lenka ; Vysokajová, Margerita (advisor) ; Štangová, Věra (referee)
1 Summary The focus of the thesis are the issues of equal status and equal opportunities for individuals caring for children, i.e., mothers and fathers, as this is an important topic of the current society and working relationships. The reason for that is the gradual transition from the classical family model of the father-breadwinner and the mother-caregiver to a modern dual-breadwinner model, with a significantly more equal position of women in society, in which both parents want to be involved both in the care and upbringing of their children as well as in the working environment. This work compares legal regulations of the Czech Republic and the Nordic countries, namely Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland, whose family policies are described in the introductory chapters. Nordic countries have a rather specific approach in the area of family policy leading to a gender-neutral state where gender plays almost no role. They are focused on creating a fairly equal society with a pro-father approach in the form of a strong involvement of men in childcare and education. The other side of such equality is the emergence of discrimination, described in detail in the third chapter. The support of families and their involvement in working life has given rise to a new discriminatory reason in labour law...
