Anti-patrioten, Traitors, Murderers in white cloaks. The image of "The Jew" as an "enemy" in the propaganda of late stalinism
Šimová, Kateřina ; Reiman, Michal (advisor) ; Kolenovská, Daniela (referee)
The period of late Stalinism (1948-1953) witnessed sharp rise of anti-Jewish animosity and discrimination from the part of the Soviet regime. These tensions were caused by both domestic factors (ideological diversification of Soviet intellectual elite, escalation of Jewish nationalism, struggle for power among highest nomenclature) as well as international factors (transformation of the Soviet-Israeli relations, rise of the Cold War). The thesis analyzes, how these circumstances were reflected at that time. Therefore it tries to identify, how the image of "The Jude" was formed by the Soviet propaganda and how it changed in the given time period. As a general framework for this analysis the concept of "The Enemy" will serve which is considered to be one of the basic elements of totalitarian ideologies. The thesis examines by means of semiotic method two significant propaganda campaigns of that period, namely campaign against the "cosmopolitism" in January - March 1949 and campaign accompanying "The Doctors' Plot" during January - March 1953. It would try to identify, how the image of "The Enemy" was connected at that time with the notion of "The Jew".
Jewish Condition as Image of Marginalization
Pavlíková, Kristina ; Jamek, Václav (advisor) ; Voldřichová - Beránková, Eva (referee)
The theme of this bachelor thesis is the life and literary work of Jacques de Lacretelle, a French literature figure of the 20th century. Its aim is to expound his extensive work which is nowadays almost forgotten. The thesis focuses mainly on Lacretelle's vision of the Jews as described in his two novels- Silbermann and The return of Silbermann. Based on the detailed analysis the thesis tries to understand the reasons of choosing the Jewish motif for Lacretelle's work and personal connotations in it. Lacretelle's life and work is studied in comparison with a Czech author called Ladislav Fuks. We shortly introduce this writer, main events of his life connected with his literary work and his unique style of writing based on the method of substitute literary themes. This approach is subsequently applied on Lacretelle's writings and gives us a new point of view of them. Also we try to compare the series about Silbermann with Fuks's short-story anthology called Mí černovlasí bratři. At the end we draw a comparison between Lacretelle and Fuks and try to discover resemblances in their lives and works. This enables to understand their motives to choose the Jews as the main characters of their writings, probably connected mainly to their feeling of non-acceptance caused by their homosexuality. Česká stráž Journal (1890-1901) and its most Influential Editors
Baloun, Pavel ; Čechurová, Jana (advisor) ; Velek, Luboš (referee)
The object of this work is to analyse Česká stráž journal at the end of 19th century (1890-1901). The main stress is put on the period, when the editorial staff consisted of an editorial trio (Cyril Horáček, Václav Choc and Eduard Koerner), who were trying to create a new political party. At that time the editors had made contacts with the political and cultural elites such as Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, Josef Svatopluk Machar etc. The editorial group of Česká stráž journal belonged to a radical movement of Czech lands. However, the editors split up at the dawn of the 20th century and each of them entered a different political party.
Hate speech in the Czech legal theory and media practice
Moravová, Veronika ; Křeček, Jan (advisor) ; Štechová, Markéta (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the topic of "hate speech" in relation to the freedom of expression. In the first part, I went into the legislation on freedom of expression and hate speech in our legal system. I devoted a considerable part to international treaties concerning this issue that, according to the Constitution, are a part of our laws and base of the national legislation to a great extent. There are two different approaches to the freedom of expression - the American and European one. The first one is close to the absolute concept of freedom of speech that also covers the hate speech. The second one excludes the hate speech from its protection. The most typical representatives of these two approaches are the U.S. and Germany so I have also paid attention to the legislation of the two countries. As this topic is extremely wide, I chose for the practical part a few cases that are somehow boundary. With the aid of these extremes, I tried to define the limits of freedom of speech. In the next two subsections, I tried to reflect two controversial lawsuits medially, i.e. the Mein Kampf edition and the visit of David Duke in pages of the Lidové noviny, Právo and MF Dnes. The next subsection is devoted to the Internet, beyond the territory of states, so, logically, there is a collision between...

Jews in Habry
Šanca, Filip ; Nosek, Bedřich (advisor) ; Holubová, Markéta (referee)
The Habry Jewish community is not insignificant, but it draws attention to its hidden importance both in terms of the year of the first appearance of Jews (i.e. 1341) and the people who appeared there. Dr. A. Stránský was born there, the commercial council of August G. Stránský's government came from there; not far from Habry, there was the last Yeshiva in traditional schooling in the Czech Lands, the place where the Habry Jews would go to be educated, and where the later Chief Rabbi R. Feder taught Habry's Jewish children. From the population list we can gather that the community there was not always large. From information on which this study is based, and which relates mostly to the period of the 19th and 20th centuries, that is, the time when Jews enjoyed more freedom in their activities and lives, it is apparent that the elevation of Habry was connected with the Jews who lived there. We should remember a doctor's free medical treatment for poor Jews, the founding of the Werfel and Böhm factory, which provided employment for up to 100 people, help to Jewish businessmen in issuing food stamps when poverty was at large, or the establishment of bus transport until Habry's elevation to the status of a town, and many other matters connected with the lives of the Jews. The Habry Jews were an...

Legal aspects of persecuting Jewisch citizens in Nazi Germany
Fialová, Barbora ; Seltenreich, Radim (advisor) ; Horák, Záboj (referee)
Resumé This thesis titled "Legal aspects of persecuting Jewisch citizens in Nazi Germany" discusses a fairly brief period in history in relation to a specific group of individuals. It provides the viewpoint of the persecution of the Jewish citizens by the Nazi State from a predominantly legal aspect, focusing on specific laws and regulations accepted in relation to the Nazis' anti-Semitic policy. The goal of this work was the endeavour to summarise this brief period of Jewish history, point out the most important legal aspects of separation of German Jews from society and prove that assumption of power by the Nazis and implementation of the anti-Semitic policy had a legal basis. This work is divided (not counting the introduction and conclusion) into six chapters, which are further divided into sub-chapters, possibly into additional parts. The first chapter is an excursion into the general concept of human races, racism and racist ideology, essential for understanding the reasoning of society at the beginning of the 20th century. The Nazis were convinced of the existence of higher and lower races and the danger of their mixing, on which they based their anti-Semitic policy, chiefly directed in the interests of maintaining "racial purity". The second chapter focuses on defining the concepts of anti-Semitism...
