Transylvanian Regional Identity after 1989: Political Reflection
Kocián, Jiří ; Vykoukal, Jiří (advisor) ; Rosůlek, Přemysl (referee) ; Stojarová, Věra (referee)
KOCIÁN, Jiří. Transylvanian regional identity and its political reflection after 1989. The thesis deals with the question of reviving Transylvanian regional identity and its political use in Romania after 1989. It demonstrates that regional identity has gradually grown in political importance, and represents the content, actors and typology of models of its reflection. The Romanian Communist regime under Nicolae Ceaușescu followed longer-term centralizing tendencies that did not favor maintaining regional specificities. But regional identity, like other collective identities, is the result of a continuous process of daily interactions between its bearers and external actors, all of whom are involved in its construction. Because of that, it survived a period of suppression in its vernacular form. Contributing to its survival was the fact that the multi-ethnic region of Transylvania and its specificities, which represent the core of regional identity, have a thousand-year history. The thesis points, by applying a discourse analysis of the content of newspaper articles, to the fact that regional identity took the form of political discourse after 1989. This discourse rivaled the previous discursive hegemony of the country's centralist concept of state and nation in Romanian public sphere. At the same...
Migration and regional identity
GAUTIER, Helene Agathe Vanille
Migration is at the centre of human history (Benmayor & Skotnes, 1994, p.5) and it has become easier to migrate inside Europe since the Schengen Area has been implemented in 1995. However, European immigration in France is invisibe and very little researched (Lillo, 2014, p.85). The migration to Brittany is a phenomenom developed recently (Morillon & Etiemble, 2008, p.125) and even if it is gaining momentum, this French region has still the lowest rate of immigrants in France (Economic and Social Council of Brittany, 2007, p.87, INSEE & DRJSCS, 2005, p.5-6). Brittany's regional identity is well known in France (Quand les sondages sont unanimes, 2019, p.44) and this region is defined as one with a strong identity (Kernalegenn, 2011). The aim of this master thesis is to elaborate hypothesis about whether or not European immigrants are aware of Brittany's regional identity before settling in the region, the perception they have of Brittany's regional identity once they live there and finally whether or not their integration in this French region with a strong identity is difficult. This qualitative research is based on four semi-structured interviews with European immigrants and one with a French person born in England, all now living in Brittany.
Regionální identita obyvatel mikroregionu Jemnice
KRATOCHVÍLOVÁ, Barbora
This bachelor thesis examines the degree of regional identity of the inhabitants of the micro-region of Jemnice. The area of interest was chosen based on its specific geographic location. The first part is devoted to the definition and characterization of key concepts such as the region, the perception of geographic space and its regional identity. The practical part of the thesis is based on a questionnaire survey and an analysis of the obtained data was carried out. In the framework of the survey, the citizens were consulted within individual hierarchical levels of administrative units, patriotism, their susceptibility to migration and / or, for example, the demarcation of the micro-region by the population. Within the interest area, the prevailing national identity was identified, followed by a regional identity.
Nation-Building in unrecognised states: Case study, Transnistrian Moldovan Republic
Viktora, Matyáš ; Šír, Jan (advisor) ; Šisler, Filip (referee)
The topic of this case study is the national identity of the unrecognised Transnistrian Moldovan Republic. The study draws from the constructivist assumption that every national identity is constructed by intellectual, political and other elites. The study seeks answers to the question of whether there is a separate Transnistrian identity, how is such identity constructed, on which foundations it is being built and which tools are being involved in the process. The study begins with the history of the region in the context of Russian and Soviet colonialist policies of Russification, Moldovanisation and managed immigration. This chapter is followed by theoretical chapter on the theme of national identity. The main part of the work sets out to identify the tools, which are being used by the regime to create the national identity: The propaganda, politicized historiography and language policies. These tools are in turn compared with the previous colonial policies of Russification and Moldovanisation in the conclusion.
Region Building : the process of regionalization of defense and security cooperation in Visegrad and Western Balkan countries
Vanchoski, Aleksandar ; Janáč, Jiří (advisor) ; Czoch, Gábor (referee)
The process of region building and regionalization is an emerging phenomenon examined in the same time by historians, geographers, political scientists, economists diplomats and other scientific profiles. The concepts of region and regionalization could appear at different spatial scales, such as supra-state, sub-state or as a cross-border units and processes. Furthermore region and regionalization are complex for defining because they incorporate different narratives and categories as regional identity, spatial borders and delineating, cultural and social homogeneity, political and economic interdependence etc. Regions are invented, re-invented or constructed with purpose to reply to different functional, territorial and administrative purposes. In the era of ongoing globalization and deepening of the European integration, regions are becoming powerful tool for achieving different goals and interests. Nowadays regions, regional cooperation, regional identity are becoming a terms very often used in political and public discourses for different kind of mobilization. Western Balkan, similarly as Visegrad and Baltic regional formats is one of the emerging spatial formation that is appearing in the context of EU integration policies. In Macedonian political and public discourse these tendencies are...
The concept of regional identity in the research of socially constructed regions: a multiscale perspective
Nikischer, Richard ; Chromý, Pavel (advisor) ; Siwek, Tadeusz (referee) ; Daněk, Petr (referee)
It has been approximately three decades since "new" approaches to studying regions began to appear in the context of socio-cultural turn in geography. From the perspective of the so-called new regional geography, the region does not represent a naturally given spatial unit nor a semantically empty construction of the analysis of the society's spatial organization. The "new" regional geographer perceives regions as dynamic social structures linked to a collective consciousness. In this respect, the research of regions represents a study of the social organization of space. While research of the spatial (geographic) organization of society in Czech geography has a rather long tradition, a similar statement cannot be made regarding the research into the social organization of space (the other side of the relationship between space and society). Despite the fact that even in Czechia the number of academics interested in the process of the institutionalization of regions is gradually growing, i.e. about how and why regions are constructed/deconstructed as a part of social life, domestic research of the social organization of space is still only in its early stages. The present doctoral dissertation represents a relevant contribution to the current debate regarding the issues of the social organization...
Regions through time and space: Problem of regionalization
Semian, Michal ; Chromý, Pavel (advisor) ; Anděl, Jiří (referee) ; Daněk, Petr (referee)
The thesis is rooted in the new regional geography paradigm that gained strength in geographical thought since the 1980s. This approach is characterized by emphasizing the socially constructed nature of regions; thus, regions are scrutinized as a historically contingent process. A region is formed, reproduced and eventually disappears in time. The thesis works with the assumption that a plurality of regions, that exists in changing time- space contexts of different mechanisms and meanings, can be experienced de facto in any particular area. In simpler terms, it can be understood as a plurality of regional images produced on the one side by regional actors to fulfil their particular goals and on the other regional images produced by inhabitants in and outside the region in order to understand the outside world and position themselves within it. Motivation for the production of images can vary, from a simple manifestation of one position in the regional system, through the attempt to attract attention towards the region to exploitation of the regional potential in order to fulfil particular power-oriented aims. The general idea of a region can be sought throughout the synthesis of the many regional images that can be understood as somewhat layers of a region. The thesis contributes to the discussion...
